I first heard this song nearly 30 years ago on a Phil Spector compilation set called"Wall Of Sound".Beautiful, ageless, timeless rebellion......................
In the posted lyrics it is 'The school board says he cant come to school no more...It should be the School board won't let him come to school no more..
Love this! I don't know why for so many years, I thought this was Ronnie Spector (probably because I'd heard or read it to be so). I have a Phi-Dan 45 of this.
Believe it or not, I own this '45, & it still plays. I loved this song & this version. In Denver, this was THE hit version. Great, great memory! Wolfsky9
I Got in Sooo Much Trouble with My Father for Singing This song. in the Car, Time of the Beatles. My Brother Started to let his Hair grow long an My Father did not like it One Bit I was Told to Never to Sing this Song Again.
@warpony253 I hope that you dont, or that you learn not to listen to your father. Everybody NEEDS to find our own way. Its a wonderfull song and your father should enjoy it.
now this is the version i remember......and back then i used to think this was the ronettes protest record. i would play it over and over again....and now i finally get the real story...
I have this on my 'Phil Spector-Wall Of Sound' Box Set of albums, purchased in the early 1980's, with writing credits to Barry Mann and Cynthia Weill of Brill Building fame. I was told that Charlotte died from breast cancer in 1976. The Box Set indicates the track as a Phil Spector Production, but Philled releases were ALL claimed by Phil. Great Post.
Good though the Jody Miller version is, for my money, this Bonnie & The Treasures version is far superior, and dare I say, it could even be the definitive version, but don't quote me on that!!
I had heard OF but never heard the Jody Miller version until a few years ago. I then learned of this version, which I believe was produced by Phil Spector, but this may be the first time I've heard it. So, there's no Bonnie? Or is she a group member who's not the lead singer?
Have you noticed that the lyrics of the 3rd verse are entirely different from the Jody Miller version? Also, this one has a bridge with a line I've never been able to make out. At 1:48 is she singing "That's Where He Belongs"? That doesn't really make any sense in the context of the rest of the phrase, so it's probably something else.
So that may explain why this isn't on the Phil Spector "Back to Mono" box set. I believe there are some recordings by a group called the Treasures (no "Bonnie and" as part of their name).
Hi. The Treasures were a different group to the girl back up of Bonnie (Charlotte). Spector set up I think one session with The Treasures, but only exec produced and owned the label for Home of the Brave as I understand it.

Jody Miller is a fantastic singer, but the Bonnie and the Treasures version of "Home of the Brave" is my favorite.

Hi I found a copy of the lyrics. Thought it would help out particularly in the difficult bridge section. Have sent it on to IloveJenni47 to put up.

Nope, Bonnie was "played" by Charlotte, there wasn't anyone with the name Bonnie in the group.

I used to have the sheet music to Home of the brave. I'll try and find it....

Found the lyrics to home of the brave for you....

This was actually produced by Jerry Riopelle, a protégé of Phil Spector's. It was released on the Phi-Dan label, a subsidiary of Philles.

I can't make out that line either.
