To exemplify: it is often easier to demonstrate the mythical nature of the Bible to a person who believes it than it is to, say, try to explain the scientific method to them, for which they may very well have all sorts of mental barriers to overcome. It's a lot easier to get a Christian fundamentalist to look at the Bible than it is to get them to read Darwin. It's something they are familiar and comfortable with (at least, they think it is!)

Carl Sagan, respected scholar in his own right, thinks humans (our species) have been around for 200000 years, but Hitchens narrows it further FOR THE SAKE OF ARGUMENT to only half that, 100000 years. The god you worship ordered Saul to murder babies, by the sword. You defend infanticide. Presumable you would have gutted those babies yourself if god told you to.

@LesPaul2006 - no meaning, seeking spiritual truth and reality which is revealed in the perfect life and resurrection of Jesus Christ. I agree w/ CH that by definitions, miracles are extremely rare ( but not impossible).These evil pples f'forfeited' their lands based on their own fallen corrupt behaviors. Christianity does not ever invite people to accept non-sense:It asserts a very specific, narrow & attested reality of God intervening in a unique manner as he has always in human history.

Check out the recent article by Jackson Lears in the May 16, 2011 issue of the The Nation entitled "Same Old New Atheism" .The article offers a compelling analysis of Sam Harris' works. Consideration is given to general secular social perspectives

Yes, Mr Hitchens, I can in fact think of all manner of vices& gross sins an authentic adherent of western monotheism & Christianity would NEVER DO.Unlike HItler or Stalin, a Christian would never seek to murder millions of pple & commit mass murder or starve masses of pple. my U R quite craven- you appear to have all the answer (at least the ones you want):
1) False
2) Jesus states ANYONE who wants Him & living water is welcome- He invites YOU most importantly. Pple who don't want Jesus will not be coerced.
3) In any instance when innocent pple die in relations to the actions of God, it is due 2 the COLLATERAL consequence of the decisions of evil pple just as when terrorist use human shields
4) Correct-it compels slavery to CHRIST but not 2 any man;Clear?

It is obvious you are too intellectually lazy to know what is written in your own Bible. Or perhaps you are afraid to research these points for fear of what you might find. Simply stating that I'm wrong doesn't prove anything. In my videos I cite chapter & verse, quotes from Christian apologists as well as the historical figures you mention. I've put many years of study/debate and scrutiny into the positions I now hold, & I am willing to change my beliefs again if the facts warrant.

If that's what you 'think' why do you attempt 2 persuade me when I know the facts to be other than what you state. Jesus tells us that if the unbelieving & wicked won't believe the prophets, the Law& HImself they won't believe even the dead if they were to come back to this world & tell them. If YOU refuse to trust & God does not change you, there is no natural force that can do so & you will die in your sins. Regarding western slavery, the systematic theology of the Bible CLEARLY condemns it

Actually you err in saying "the Creator of the universe" himself exterminated these people (no plagues or giant hailstones). The bible clearly states the opposite. Humans following your god were the ones who carried out the ethnic violence. Even the slaughter of infants. If u were a faithful follower of yahweh in Moses' or Joshua's army, YOU would be required to slit the throats of children. Ur comments above defend these actions against the "vile" and "evil. So you believe babies can be evil?

I have NEVER implied, said, or believe any such thing; furthermore you cannot point to a single mainstream christian denomination which teaches any such thing, It is absurd claims such as this which lead reasonable pple to question the logic & self serving motivations of those who share your persuasion. What you seem intent on evading (but which the text makes clear) is that the evil, wicked actions of these pple led God to cut them off.
