  • Is that Jamaican boy-band Musical Youth dressed in choir robes?

  • Beautiful rendition of a beautiful song.

I always thought Kirsty was beautiful, her voice was angelic. When I heard about her death, I was bummed out for weeks, it just hit me.

I already had all her albums by that time, and all I do is just remember what a gift she was to us all.

  • is Johnny Marr at the guitar?

  • RIP, Kirsty. We still miss you.

  • Kirsty you brought us the fairy tale of NY, and you were beautiful so RIP you gave more to the Mortal world than it will ever give back

  • To be honest I hate Modern music like Justin Bieber and The Wanted but I REALLY LOVE music like Kirsty MacColl and Adam Ant. :)

  • Do wish people would stop trash-talking on youtube. The reason British and US English differ in spelling is because when it was codified in the 18th century with the creation of extensive dictionaries (before that, everyone spelt words however they wished) the British spelling was heavily based on a word's origins, so French, Latin and Greek spelling was used, even when the British pronunciation was at odds with the spelling. In the US they chose a more phonetic spelling. Simple as that.

  • @BobTheMunificent shut the fuck up some irish english there

  • I don't really like this version it sounds a bit too overproduced. Much prefer Billy Bragg's original or even the covers by King blues or Jamie T.

  • Thank you Kirsty.*****

  • Iiiis that Johnny Marr on guitaaar??

  • Lovely lady, lovely song and RIP. But the first two lines are stolen from "Leaves That Are Green" by Simon & Garfunkel

  • @adatherton BUT. Not important. Actually the song is on Simon's first solo album... You think Billy Bragg didn't know that? Maybe you'll find similar lyrics from any bands if you just keep on digging. Don't think they care about you whining.

  • Great song from a great talent!

  • An amazing song by a singer taken from us far too soon. It's one of those songs that stays with ya for life. R.I.P Kirsty xxx

  • Such a loss and sorely missed by those who appreciated her music. Will never forget you Kirsty x

  • Wow, after reading previous comments I wasn't sure if the video was musical; political; or educational. I just love Kirsty's music and don't really care about the other stuff that's being written on this page. I hope there are others out there with the same opinion. Enjoy the music!!!

  • @22Phantasm LOL. Tell me about it :p

  • @alexsuchapimp? that's a matter of opinion...And yeah billy's version was good..WHY does one have to better than another? ENJOY BOTH..

  • Billy Bragg version totally better!

  • Oh love this tune I won £50 on karaoke last night singing this

  • @poofax56 the English language is hard because we have standards, America changed words because they just don't quite make it

  • 3dpeter and poofax56, go dance on someone elses grave you twats

  • Kirsty was a star , what a beautiful voice, memories!! x

  • Is Big Country the backing band on this track?

  • @UltimoFan

really? but they have a root of scottish music esp. on the percussion.

  • 32 people are looking for another girl.

  • 1985, the year my father was 45 old. Now 26 years later he's dead, and i'm 45 now.

Man, does time fly, witch i hate! Therefore i wish that i had a time machine so that i could go back to the 80's and stay there, because i don't like the present we live in. Yeah, imo the world was at it best from the mid 80'until the 90's, after that, everything went downhill in life as in music. What shame!

  • @3DPeter WEll done, you're 45 and you don't know how to spell "which"

  • @Banuel

Dude, i'm from holland, so my english is way better than your dutch. And whining about spelling on you tube is sooooooo stuppid, because people from the whole world come here, so who cares about spelling?

  • @3DPeter

You are so right my friend. We English are a disgrace when it comes to learning foreign languages and cultures. Our politicians are mostly to blame especially since Thatcher introduced the 1988 education act and that stupid twat Tony Blair introduced his faith schools into the our education system, now being made worse by Cameron. Our schools now put a strong emphasis on religious superstition. Foreign languages and cultures have a low priority in our education system which is tragic

  • @poofax56

there's no need to be ashamed, because it's easy if everyone would speak and write english on the internet, because otherwise it become a giant mess, so consider yourself lucky that you live in an english spoken country. I do'n't mind the nerds who wine about my spelling because it's always better than their dutch, witch i already said. Next thing is that i hate religion, and think that religion should be forbidden in public, because it's a private thing, and not a social duty!!!

  • @3DPeter

English is not a natural language, it is a bastard language largely manufactured from the Anglicisation of French and Latin words. This is the reason that English spelling is so difficult and inconsistent. I did German at school and the spelling was very simple because the rules were consistent.

I get the impression that people who learn English as a second language find it easy to speak but difficult when it comes to spelling. America has altered some English spelling for this reason.

  • @poofax56 English is a natural language, it has taken words from 100s of other languages, and evolved, not manufactured, else the gramatical rules of Latin and French would be followed. I don't think that the USA changed some spelling just because they found them difficult, I think that American English is a different language, with different spelling for that reason.

  • @2ambrokennail "We have really everything in common with America nowadays, except, of course, language." Oscar Wilde, 1887, The Canterville Ghost. Check the year. Nothing new under the sun.

  • @poofax56

We always needed a world language, and english is fine, because it's an easy language i gues, so there's no need to being ashamed about, because you already live in an englisch speaking country, so why would you bother to learn some other language? I speak german too, but that's because my parent worked a few years in germany, and i came over during the hollydays, but i don't speak french, and i don't care, because i think that they should learn english like the rest of us.

  • @3DPeter

I wasn't being critical of the English language in any way. It is a very good language and that is why it is widely spoken. My criticism was directed at the schools system in the UK where foreign languages and cultures are largely ignored in favour of religious superstition. Of course we are fortunate to live in an English speaking country because anywhere we go in the world everyone speaks it but it doesn't follow that people in English speaking countries should ignore other languages

  • @poofax56

Here in holland at some schools they teach french, but who needs it anyway? When you do alot of busines with

some specific country, then i would recomend that you learn their language, and it might come in handy when you have a favorite country where you like to spend your hollydays, then fine, but for al other things, english is enough. btw, did you know that we dutch use alot of english words? especialy when it comes to technical terms like with computers, or office language.

  • @poofax56 Most schools in England teach french and German, my daughters school teaches French, German, Spanish, Russian, Italian and Mandarin and in most English schools now Religious Stusies falls under Ethics and Social Studies... abroad subject that covers beliefs and understanding different societies. So i think they have foreign language and cultures covered in the UK.

  • @ShellyEchoPark

    Oct 2011 press report

Modern languages are close to extinction in British schools warns Anthony Seldon, a leading educationalist, pioneer of innovative teaching and head teacher of Wellington College. He will tell language teachers that their subject is deeper trouble than it has been for a century.

Learning French, German or Spanish is becoming a minority pursuit, similar to learning Latin or Greek, he will tell a conference convened by the Schools Network at Warwick University.

  • @poofax56 Your comeback argument that G.C.S.Es taken by pupils is dropping may well be true, im not denying. But i wasnt arguing that point in the first place...i was arguing your point that UK schools mostly ignored foreign languages. They dont, they teach the usual and now they have schools that specialize in more languages. The schools teach the languages...but the facts you put that GCSES are dropping is down to pupil interest...and not the schools failure in teaching the subject at all.

  • @ShellyEchoPark

So religion now falls under ethics and social studies. You do surprise me I was led to believe that it falls under the science class along with creationism. What has Religious studies got to do with ethics when creationism puts the age of the universe at about 6000 years old? I have relatives in the teaching profession and what you say about languages doesn't ring true but they have assured me that things are about to change. No thanks to Blair and his stupid faith schools!

  • @ShellyEchoPark

    Oct 2011 Press report cont....

Anthony Seldon also warns that the UK has a "little Britain" attitude which threatens international competitiveness and partnerships

The No. of pupils taking French and German GCSE has more than halved in the last 16 years

This summer 154,221 pupils took French, while in 1995, 350,027 did

Some 60,887 students took German GCSE this summer compared with 129,386 in 1995

The No. of pupils taking A-levels in French and German halved between 1996 and 2010

  • @poofax56 languages are taught in schools and thats true. The schools that i know of teach it and my daughters school is a language school so it teaches more than the average school does. The facts that the numbers of pupils taking G.C.S.Es in languages is dropping may well be true but thats down to the interested pupil and not the schools actually teaching the subject. You said Uk schools largely ignored the foreign languages...i was replying that in fact they dont ignore them.

  • @ShellyEchoPark

The point of my original comment was to highlight the fact that our politicians are not bothered about the fact that foreign languages are in terminal decline in British schools, for whatever reason. They are more interested in religious indoctrination which they have made mandatory. This was the quote from my earlier post :-

"Foreign languages and cultures have a low priority in our education system which is tragic."

Who is to blame for this, Westminster or teachers??

  • @3DPeter that is soooo true!

  • @3DPeter I do you ignorant foreign sod.

  • @3DPeter Mainly yes. But that's not the end of the world, not just today.

  • i want a new England ...... without Terrorists, and Kirsty and Jo back .......wot a heroine she was, taking the bullet for Jamie her son...........Days the song says it all xxxxxxxx

  • I'm sure Billy Bragg would agree she has a much better voice.

    ;-)

  • Guillermo Gonzalez Nova murdered her

  • She died saving her child. More than any song, that tells you what a wonderful person she must have been.

  • From a woman's perspective this song works just as well as the original, which is unique. She was a cool lady. I love the subtle change of lyrics and she sings it in her trademark soft tone

  • she's got a lovley voice

  • @spongesonic100

    you mean she had

  • A great song from a fine Salford girl a sad loss

  • probably she tried to save her son.....who doesnt????

  • R.I.P Kirsty.Taken from us way too soon xx

  • Kirsty what a waste . God Blesss and a genuine RIP #tooyoungtodie

  • RIP KIRSTY

  • What a senseless loss to the world - Kirsty's voice - so pure - once upon a time alone I thought there might be justice.

  • Kirsty is fucking amazing. What she does with this song at 1:54 should be immortalized somewhere as the amazing fucking treasure that it is. A classic.

  • i love how effortless her singing sounds

  • This Billy Brag cover couldn't be any better and it will be probably the best version of all times. Kirstys voice is perfect for this song. A beautiful voice is lost forever! :'(

  • some rich arab killed her then paid island 1 million dollars shame arab shame corrup officals long live kirsty

  • @vania1013 Some rich mexican's boat killed her. Who actually was behind the controls is a matter of debat.

  • Not sure what made me think of this song again but it suddenly came back into my head. I've got the 12" single in the loft somewhere. What a cracking song! :-)

  • Forgot how good this song is until I heard it on the radio the other day. So tragic what happened to Kirsty :-((

  • Brings back the esence of the era, you'd make several fortunes if ya could bottle it, thank whatever you can't

  • Ah Kirsty...

  • RIP Kirsty

  • just uploaded a little cover of this song, please please have a quick listen :)

  • remember "justice for Kirsty"

  • was she in the club when this was filmed?

  • @TheGodParticle Yes, with her first child: I remember seeing this on "TOTP", and Peter Powell wishing her luck with the baby. All the more poignant when you know that she would later give her life to save her children. So very sad :( Wonderful legacy though :)

  • @Jojoseahorse Thanks so much, i remember hearing the bad news. we all lost a wonderful singer/songwriter. My heart does out to her children...

  • Yes it was Billy Bragg that wrote the song.

  • who wrote this song? was it billy bragg or not at all?

  • When did she die and how did she die? She is a great singer, I just watched one of her other vids. and I liked it.

  • @BananaJSSI

She was run down by a speedboat in Mexico in 1999. The area was out of bounds to boats, but the killers were from a rich family and bought their way out of it.

  • @voiceoftruth2006 That is terrible, how tragic!

  • @BananaJSSI Hit by a speedboat Banana I'm afraid. Was a terrible loss.

  • @GnosticFryingpan That is tragic!

  • RIP Kirsty - still awesome xx

  • From all the pogues, WE MISS YOU.

  • still missing you! bless

  • awesome

  • paul simon originally wrote the couplet 'i was 21 years when i wrote this song, i'm 22 now but i won't be for long' in the song leaves that are green...i wonder if billy knew that.

  • @sandalex22

how could any songwriter not know this?

  • @superbarclay you would think. maybe billy wasn't an s&g fan. or maybe it was meant to be an 'homage'. yeah, that's it. that's the ticket.

  • @sandalex22 massive s&g fan, actually. and yes, the lines are meant to be a tribute :)

  • @littlekasino thanks, i hoped so. billy's great.

  • R.I.P. so sorry k;

  • Good bless this lovely girl and her beautiful voice, i miss her so much. And a big salute for Billy, a true working class hero!

  • @TheAsssar

    She's sorely missed :(

  • 'Is it wrong to wish on space hardware?' - epic :)

  • @PunkLovingNerd

I wish planes were shooting stars

  • I have to say, Billy Bragg's version is so much better

  • Billy Bragg never had a hit ? Never heard 'Between The Wars' then ? Billy is one of the UK's unsung heroes in terms of the songs he writes, and besides he is not a f*cking pop star anyhow. One of the most respected artists of modern times he is though...

  • I like the Billy Bragg Original more! I don´t think that she understand the meaning of the Lyrics...

  • @Michivonundzulaut how can she not understand the lyrics when she wrote half of them. even bill sings her added verses!!!

  • @TheClaydon Would that be the extra verse that was actually written by BB? All Kirsty did was strip down the added lyrics to fit one extra verse. Get your facts right before having a pop, eh? (and yes, Billy sings the extra verse - EVERY TIME he performs the song and ALWAYS asks the crowd to sing up for Kirsty! His song - her memory. RIP KM)

  • Listened to this for first time in 20 odd years. What a loss to his world!!! We'll miss you Kirsty!

  • Listened to this for first time in 20 odd years. What a loss to his world!!!

  • Why does Billy Bragg receive so much media attention? He's never had a bastard hit! He's wrote ONE song (this one). I wish the man would just fuck off!

  • @CnutRexAnglorum Miserable cnut!

  • @fatfox57 aww why you say that ?

  • R.I.P Kirsty.....taken from us far too young

  • God rest her soul

  • love this tune brings back all those infant memories ...love it nice marr bad# ass bass

  • Why do I feel a cold chill down my entire body... why do the good people always die before their time.

  • 10 years on - still miss her. Always will.

  • This song wakes up the young man in me.Kirsty is so amazing.

  • In this particular video she looks something like Jim Morrison's witchy widow, novelist Patricia Kennealy-Morrison. Those famous lines about being 21 when she "wrote this song" and now she's 22 were obviously influenced by Iggy's lyrics on The Stooges' '1969'.

  • @jannyrcobs Nope, you're wrong. Billg Bragg took the first two lines from Paul Simon. Osterberg probably did too because Leaves that are Green is from 1966.

  • @1ivingHe11 Yes, you're definitely right. It had been so long since I heard anything from the Sounds Of Silence album that the number had been completely erased from my memory. No doubt Iggy picked it up from there, considering the way--like his friends Bowie and Thurston Moore--he takes influence from all manners of music and art in general. As the editors used to respond in the Marvel Comics letters pages when some reader would call them on an error, you get your No-Prize!

  • R.I.P 10 years later...

  • KIRSTY MaCOLL WE MISS YOU SO MUCH GOD BLESS - MEMORIES GREAT TIMES 80S TIMES WILL NEVER BE REPEATED JUST MEMORIES

  • Comment removed

  • great video,R.I.P. Kirsty....

  • I love Kirsty, I love (almost) everything she's ever done, but this is a magical song. It's a pretty great pop song to begin with.....

But where she takes this (at about 1:52) through the BeachBoys-style overdubbings - when she yanks this into a whole other stratosphere....well, I've heard this song for 25 years and when it gets to that....it just wrecks me. WRECKS. ME. Still, after all these years.

  • CLASSIC

    .birdmad.com/

  • What a lovely lady....genius of the music scene....RIP...

  • So much of her shone through in everything she did, in a different way each time. I was always moved by everything she did when she was alive, and of course I am even more now. Thank you, Kirsty.

  • gorgeous song, dilivered by a gorgeous woman.

  • Love the light production.

  • Beautiful song. Just shows how commercial Bragg's songs can sound. Love Kirsty's voice too. Always sounds so effortless, like she's singing in the shower or peeling spuds.

  • @JoeStunner like the rest of us ...

still NOT looking for a New England lol

  • brag or mccacoll

  • 80s music was magic!!!! This song is one of them!!! Love forever!!!

  • My God! She was so gorgeous!

  • sometimes wishing on space hardware is the best you can do. miss you, kirsty.

  • Makes me happy and sad all at the same time.

  • Thank you for all the beauty you left Kirsty missed always xx

  • brill sing and bragg's word and music are pure class

  • Oh Kirsty, wish you were here today. Your career would be better than ever with your talent. Sadly missed, thanks for the great music.

  • R.I.P Kirsty :( x

  • one of the best songs ever written x

  • @PaulLosAltos

    I agree.

  • Kirsty singing a Billy Bragg song, it doesn't get much better than this.

  • RIP Kirsty, a class act and great talent.

  • she died.

  • @mickmars51 ya. she was swimming with her son. a drunk boater was heading for her son. she pushed him out of the way, saving him, killing her. So I heard.

  • @mickmars51

As did the guy who sang "The People Who Died"...Jim Caroll.

  • one of her top songs....excellent

  • wow 32 assholes dont like this - what kind of fucking shite do they get off to

    - she's amazing -

  • @anthonynewsome Just because YOU like it ass-hole DOES NOT mean everybody has to, just accept the fact people have different tastes and likes

  • @pplpilot erm ahhh - ok - so why - if you dislike her so much - are u watching this

    video -

you need to stick with Westlife & leave the real music alone

  • @anthonynewsome - at what point did I say I did not like it, I do like it? I think she's great, i just don't feel the need to rubbish those that might not. Oh and by the way, pointing out how many people have clicked the dislike button is so fucking lame its unreal and getting very tiresome having to read it every other comment.

  • @pplpilot ok calm yourself down there - you should take a chill pill - relax its friday - take stock o the situation -

I would have to say Ur not a Kirsty fan or Billy Bragg either - Westlife & Xfactor is more your style -

  • Kirsty was never totally comfortable with the whole "pop star" thing, she just loved to sing God rest her soul.

  • so sadly missed

  • she got killed by a boat???
