I think they just did it because Ciaran Hinds was in Persuasion that same year and they didn't want him looking too similar in both movies. Though I think the mustache is goofy looking :(
@jadeyes914 - It's not that he is too passionate, I think it is that this "Jane" is too soft and weak. No fire in her belly so he seems even more like the older man and her like the child.

I like her interpretation for the most part, and this is my favorite *short* adaptation (for a full length miniseries see the 1983 bbc with T. Dalton.) But this whole film is rushed for obvious reasons and sadly I feel this can be seen in the actors performances to a degree. I would have liked to have seen this cast take a stab at a more lengthy, faithful adaptation.
