These people have the catatonic subtype, It's different than paranoid schizophrenia in which the defining feature is voices, hallucinations, paranoia, etc.
They wore masks because the shock treatments and lobotomies used on mental patients caused severely blackened rings around the eyes.

schizophrenia is an awful illness and people suffering from it were/are badly mistreated.
I just pray that one day there will be a cure.
