@mweba1 Listen @ 4:30, that saw is revving high, it should have less rpm and do the 4 strokes! Probably it's not well carburated or there is an air leak somewhere!
@GabriSantin92 That is the McCulloch 840. It was running good that day with one exception. It has an airvane governorthe repeatedly got hung up with chips. That sound is the throttle being stuck partially open. Not sure there ever was a remedy found.
One of the most saddest videos Ive seen!! 3-5 person playing around with chainsaws, destroying a perfect timber giving tree! You could so easily have placed a saw mill addon to it and made some good money on selling it! But hey we just wait 50-100years for the next one!
I note that safety is not a major consern here. Drop starting the saw in the start of the vid and 3 people working on the same log with one cutting from on top. What happens if at a cut end the log moves??
Yes, it is a 840 gear drive. The size of this tree presented the owner with a chance to bury the bar. He spun up a 48" 1/2" pitch chain and dug in. I have a video of that saw running as well.
Is that other big saw a McCulloch? It sounds like one but its hard to believe that someone would still be using a saw that's 30+ years old on the job. I know how hard it is to get parts for old Homelites and McCullochs. That Husqvarna 3120 is a monster. Its amazing how that saw has almost 9 horse power.
The largest AXE in the world is now for sale on Ebay, if you would like to see it, go to Ebay, and in the search box, type in: 130569369041, and get it while you can.
@mweba1 on bars over 20" i use skip chain. i run an 8 pin on my 395xp with a 36" bar and .404 oregon chisel chain. love the 395xp. :) im lookin to get it ported.
Who did the mod work? I just bought a 3120 off craigs and am interested in getting the muffler done etc. I'm very impressed with how nice yours sounds. It just really runs nice and crisp all the way to the top of the rpm range. I'm sure the mods you did really helped the top end power rev higher and harder. Thanks for the great vid.
Is the guy in blue at 1:01 to 1:07 the customer? I own a tree service and my customers are always roaming the job site. Just gata be more careful but there fun to talk to!
They like to roam around and see how things are done after they are down. He/We did not like seeing this tree go. It had already dropped limbing on both his neighbors roofs. Liability was to great.
@zuuluu1 Yup. It gets even more dangerous when ya get poken around in the tree to. We r insured up to 100k but we still dont let anything break off. I live in a small town and if we let a twig land on there car I bet itd b on the front page of the local paper come morning lolz. At least u got the saws for the job! When we started the biz we got stihl cuz we heard they wer the best... Bought 5 and they wer horible. Used them for 4 years... now we only use husky and echo. Great saws!
Hi Folks Looks like Acer psuedo... from the bark. BTW out here we call this bucking not slabbing...though I geuss if the rounds are thin enough they are still slabs. No matter, cool vid, thanks to Brig T!
Ficus sycomorus, the sycamore (or sycomore) of the Bible; native to the Middle East and eastern Africa
Acer pseudoplatanus, the sycamore of Britain and Ireland; a European maple tree, also called sycamore maple, Platanus, the sycamores of North America, known as planes in Europe
@BrigT262 It is a great saw with plenty of power. Mods to this one were, larger main jet, muffler mod, lowered cylinder, unlimited coil. This vid is one its third or four tank of fuel. It had a lot of breaking in to do.
It is one mean sounding machine!
Unfortunately I sound it a couple months ago due to it being so heavy. I will own another someday.
@mweba1 i have a 3120 on a woodbug saw mill but i never heard of the mods you have made to yours , lower cylinder ? muffler mod ? unlimited coil ? where do i find info for these ? scott in new jersey
@hookuspookus529 you don't need that crap.. what you need to do is learn to file teeth AND rakers properly.. the chain is what cuts, the saw just pulls the chain.
@MrMeanderthal You are correct. No one needs these mods. The chain is over looked by the majority of cutters looking to be productive. On the other hand, if your chain skills are good....why not make the saw perform better
@mweba1 when I was falling, reliability was #1. operating costs were #2
modded saws are pricey and are not as reliable.. I've had a few in my day (walkerized 2100s etc.) and found that the performance gain was not really noticeable most of the time BUT the lack of reliability was..
for fun they're ok but for an everyday work saw... no.
especially when I can cut faster than a modded saw with nothing more than a pair of $5.00 files.
@mweba1 file your rakers to .030, make some noodles and measure them.. they are not .030 because the teeth can''t cut that deep running over chips from the previous tooth.. rakers are curved on the front for "safety" not because that shape pulls chips out of the cut better.. mod the front of your raker to look like a tooth and it will.. make some more noodles and measure them.. they still won't be .030 but you'll see a big difference.. as much as 50%
@MrMeanderthal There are no "rakers" on saw chain. There are "depth gauges." Maybe you're carrying over "raker" from crosscut saw and scratcher chain days, but those "rakers" pointed forward, and were the major cutters.
@woodscritter you are correct, technically they are depth gages.. but in BC we call them rakers.. depth gages are the little tool we use to make them all the same height.. it's common lingo in the logging world here..
mmm ur wrong thats RED OAK u can tell by the BArk, i cut oak all the time like 50 cords a YR plus an right away i knew that was not a Sycamore, Sycamores have different bark, its not enough half as thick as whats on that tree, nice SAw by the way :}}
@mweba1 I can well belive it. I had the beast in my hands at the huskie-store a few weeks ago. I´m not a professional lumberjack, i just need the saw for my stove in the workshop at home, so I just got a 450 E-series, it´s quite good enough if you don´t walk into the woods every day ;-)
I really wish I could of seen it in person! I will say this about the sycamore, brittle big wood, not like elm but still nasty, and I have lost my lunch a few times just chippin them when in full leaf!
Are you sure about the type of tree!!!! I have never seen a sycamore like this! Maple.... maybe but more like a oak, pen oak or silver maple and I am probably wrong on what type of oak or maple but it is not a sycamore....99% sure unless there is a variety of sycamore that i dont know about! Cool vid though
@sszztoetayoa I wish I had a picture of the entire tree. It is a sycamore and you are right, I have never seen one like this before or since. This thing was large. Approx 57" at the base and 80 plus tall. Thanks for watching
@sszztoetayoa I am by no means a professional, but it looks like a type of oak to me too from the looks of the bark, red oak maybe from the color of the trunk wood. I know that an American Sycamore has tri colored bark on most of the tree, the trunk bark is just grey, but only about 20 feet up and the wood itself is not red or dark in the middle. Just saying what I have seen, like I said I am no professional or Arborist, thanks : )

Mr.Meanderthal, what we here in BC call them rakers they are the same as depth gauges, because they do gauge how much your chain cuts.
