It's hard to cover a Beatles song that compares anywhere near favorably with the original and it didn't help Rosanne that she was a little flat at the top of the first chorus, but at least she cleans it up a bit in the second, I think they should have done another take of the vocals for that part.
This is my favorite Rosanne Cash recording and it is also my favorite cover version of a Beatles song. It has what I think are some nice acoustic guitar licks as well as nice harmony by then-husband Rodney Crowell. If memory serves me right, the fiddle was by one of the best musicians on the planet, Mark O'Connor. Also, I like the twang of the electric guitar. All in all, a perfect country record.
Thanks Rosanne for putting the Beatles on the country charts. John Lennon (R.I.P.) was the primary writer of this song and it has his trademark stamp of bittersweet longing. I like the tempo of this recording, it's a bit more upbeat than the original -- but no one else harmonizes like Lennon-McCartney, of course, and I still like their voices best on the bridge.
@amerikanprincess Quite so! I find their harmonies during the bridge spine tingling. The album it is from Beatles For Sale (UK version) has some of the best Lennon-McCartney harmonies.
Rosanne Cash is a good songwriter and also a good interpreter of other writers material. This is my favorite recording out of everything she did. It's also one of the best covers of a Beatles song in any genre.
A great and appropriate cover. I've always thought that much of the "Beatles For Sale" album (amongst their other albums) has a Country & Western feel to it.
@superlatinking yeah you're right; in their early days they had a lot of country western songs like love me do and please please me. but yeah this is an amazing version and i love it too lol
Nice Cover!!

They are not doing the under harmony like Lennon did. Of course the Beatles did it better! But, its good.

Arguably the best Beatles cover by a country artist. Wish Rosanne would do more "country," in addition to her alt and AC leanings.
