I had a meeting awhile back with some of Mitsubishi's parts procurement team (state side) and they hadn't expected that I could speak Japanese (albeit not fluently) and asked if I learned in school. I told them I was self taught and they were a little surprised of course the next question was "do you like a lot of manga?" as politely as I could I told them no I didn't really care for it (at the time I thought I might offend by saying no) . Now I wonder if they were seeing if I was otaku or not.
@jodelle6 Otaku basically means hobbyist. But in most parts of the world, otaku is what describes a person who loves anime and manga and/or celebrities. Unlike the person who told you that otakus have no life, I won't tell you so because not all otakus have no life. Unless that person is a shut-in, who does nothing but stalk celebrities, and does not socialize, that is a very extreme otaku.
Wait... So an Otaku is someone who collects stuff about gaming and anime? @.@ I watch Anime and play lots of MMORPG's... But I don't collect... Am I still an Otaku?
You know your an otaku when you spend at least 16 hours watching EVERY single one of these videos and knowing what each one's about and useful tips given in each one XD
I don't think you can call yourself an otaku, anyway... 'o' is an honourific prefix here, with 'taku' meaning 'your house' (i.e. someone confined to their house... I guess...?). Anyway, you can't use honourifics on yourself or for your own things, right? I don't know.
You're not using an honourific on yourself there, though, you're using it to someone else (which is how they're intended to be used). If someone asked you 'ogenki desu ka' you couldn't answer 'Ogenki desu'. It would HAVE to be without the 'o', that is, 'genki desu'. More examples might be, that you couldn't say 'go-chumon' to refer to your OWN restaurant order, it would have to be 'chumon wa...'. Similiarly, you couldn't say 'o-mizu' to refer to OWN water, only 'mizu'.
There's a problem with using the name "otaku". Because most people (I hope), have a more wide personality. So using the word "otaku" of yourself is just discriminating and making you a smaller person, with less depth. When I've been meeting people in Japan, they first think I'm what japanese would call "otaku", but when they talk more with me, they often tell me, that I'm not "otaku". "Otaku" and the word "hikkikomori" (people who close off themselves from the outer world I think) is combined.
I'm sorry if you have answered this question already, but if someone likes anime/manga but isn't obsessed with it, would they still be considered an otaku?
@Bobgirl009 I would say no. At least in Japan almost all people read manga quite often, maybe not anime, but manga. Being "otaku" I think, is being some kind of outsider in Japan, because that your interest takes time from work, school, family and meeting friends. That is why the word and phenomena of "otaku" is negative for so many japanese people, I think.
@Bobgirl009 Everything comes down to from which perspective you are looking of course. And who you are asking. People all over the earth are different and have individual opinions. But at least my opinion is that japanese people often don't wanna tell their own honest opinion, and then the collective opinion is the law. And collective opinion in Japan often is working a lot, sleeping less, to get time to work even more, and be even more loyal to their company. Not reading manga or watching anime
I have a question that might not be that related to the subject, but I've watched a few interview videos now and I was interested to know if hesitating and thinking a lot about answers is something "Japanese"? Or is it just because they're answering in English which is a bit difficult for them or maybe they're a bit shy about it..or camera shy..
@fyadcorp Who gives a damn anyways. :D I love Anime! It's Art! How could I not like it >:D That doesn't mean I'l dedicate all my time to it. People who are Otaku also do other things! Why not do both? :)
So the consensus is that "otaku" are people that are way to into something (manga, anime, trains, etc.)
To me, otaku are basically nerds. They're unkempt, strangely dressed, and smell of body odor. Akihabara is a mob spawn of otaku. Bring a clip for your nose if you go.
hiya... though im not japanese but same as asian :) i really look up on japan.. from culture,attitudes.. foods! and anime:) i wanna go to japan someday :)
yeah, that second dude is awesome, i mean they all are but he really is very good. It must be fun speaking with him and pushing him further in your conversations with him. Cool.
i started learning japanese because i picked up phrases from subbed anime.

I like the 2nd guys answer the most, his answer was not really as biased and stereotypical as the others. Unlike this idiot @rumbazz
It's not like all otaku are the way most of them explained. Yes, im an otaku but no im not scared of real girls and i do have a social life. It seems like people are still influenced by it's old definition.
To be honest my GF has no problem with my deep love for anime and manga and etc.... which is surprising cause she doesn't like anime. At all....
I was impressed by some of the responses. Love seeing the interviews. I thought the last girl's response was very well thought out considering she's still learning the English language.
Can you put subtitles in new videos. Some times is hard to understand what they say especially for person like me whose native language isn't English. Thank you and good luck with further videos.
6:50 I love it how when asked "would you like an otaku boyfriend" she does the head twist and sucking through the teeth which according to the means "no way in the world" if memory serves.
I wouldnt consider myself otaku personally. I dont go around dressed as tetsuo or kaneda. I have quite a lot of anime on dvd. I watch a lot online too. I find japanese culture interesting because it seems so completely alien to my own. The way i see it personally, if you want to dress up like haruhi suzimiya in your day to day life, go for it. wow, I dont know, some of my japanese friends told me, Gaijin Otaku are omoshiroi because most of them still have life, yet Japanese otaku are really kimochiwarui. hmmm so you mean that the "real" otaku meaning can only be understood in Japan isn't it? What I mean is, I don't know any "real" otaku, and going with the description, there is no one like that in my entire neighborhood. Many people like anime, and everyone has their favourite characters. Many people like japanese singers that are voice actresses too, and would love to be in a live concert of them. The thing about otaku is doing all of this too much, and almost living for it, right?
i have heard "otaku" described as anyone with an obsession in something, lol.
hearing the word almost makes me insecure, because I do like anime/manga-- (im an artist, so i appreciate it on that level as well) and just Japanese culture in general.. i would not want to be judged for it, but i wouldent say i am completely "obssessed" anyway. i totally get how someone could be, "a little scared" by that-- its like the way we describe a "Fanatic." haha =)
I've commented before but just like to say cheers for interesting topics you've been discussing ppl with and having the patience to keep doing these :) best of luck.
like three words and use them whenever they can. Anyways they pretty hated in the anime/manga community as they just take things way too far. Plus they usually have terrible taste and only like the big 3 and DeathNote. They're also the most likely people to label themselves otaku.
Anyways my point is this; how do Japanese people feel about people like this. Do they think they're weird or annoying because they have such a huge obsession over their country? Would be a interesting video perhaps!
Oh really? That's interesting man. I thought they may be grouped in the whole 'baka gaijin' thing. In fact there's even a character in 'Lucky Star' that takes the piss out of them, a transfer student from USA who learned all her Japanese from anime, and only likes Japanese bands who've performed songs on them. She also generalizes Japan a lot.
I feel sorry for your misunderstanding. You have a warped corrupted mind that has lead you to talk such nonsense about 'otaku'. I guess that you couldn't do any better though...you aren't Japanese nor do you live in a country that show the slightest of similarities.
Stop poking you nose into things you do not understand.
It would be the same as me butting in and saying that all 'nerds' wear 5 inch thick glasses, have oily hair and devote themselves to programming.
Omg... Just shut the fuck up. It's not my fault if you're too stupid to sort the comments by thread. Don't bother replying, I can feel my IQ decreasing just by having to read your posts.
Like I give a fuck what you do and don't do. Why are you trying to justify yourself over some comment I made 5 hours ago? Just shut the fuck up already. Don't reply because I won't read it.
@0gami1tto@0gami1tto I think you mean newbs not Otaku. Otaku can love those certain anime and manga etc. but that does not mean they are a newb. Otaku to me means someone that loves anime manga and japanese things not someone that obsecesses over only Naruto, One Piece, and Death Note. But someone could love sports and be a Sports Otaku. Newbs are like when someone just gets into anime or manga and they don't know much about it and they obsecesses over it.
@0gami1tto Sorry, you didn't have to call me that. It looked like that was the second part of your comment so you are right I should have read the rest of the comments first sorry. I was not trolling.
Hey man, do you know the word Weaboo? It's basically like Wapanese, or Wigger. I guess it'd be the American/European etc etc version of an otaku, as they share all the same interests like Anime & Manga etc. But what makes them Weaboo's is they absolutely IDOLIZE Japan and think anything from there is the best thing ever and wish they were Japanese too. Like to an annoying degree. They're pretty much the people who write Kawaii or Sugoi on every YouTube video as they only know (*cont*)
i think otaku simply means nerd. judging from the way they described otakus, they are people who are obsessed with something which is out of the norm. but then again, people who used computers back then were called nerds... but look at us now! :D
@peasent1287 I am sorry. Otaku also means you. I slipped my mind. Otaku(お宅) originally means your house , so otaku sometimes sounds a bit strange and rude depends on a situation. Anata is easy to use.
haha...my senpai said i am ani-otaku and i was like what is an otaku? 0_o
then when he explained that an otaku is someone who's totally crazy about one particular thing, i couldn't help but giggle!. Right now it doesn't sound like it but that day It was soooo funny xD
Please continue to make these "Japan Interviews" videos. I tend not to like most of your other videos, but out of all of the videos that I have seen from you channel, these have easily been the most informative and entertaining to watch. Thank You.
There are a couple Japanese TV shows featuring Otaku. One is Sexy Voice and Robo. Where the otaku is into toy robots and a particular anime. He doesn't show much interest in his Schoolgirl parnter (They solve cases together) But is trying to meet girls.
Another is Akihabara@Deep, a group of otaku trying to protect Akihabara. They each have their own & different interest. The characters protrayed rather silly, but an interesting look at them.
Finally ,,,^^..That's right/...Otaku is not a thing to be proud about(in Japan atleast..)..My Japanese teacher told me that Otaku, Are someone who is a big fan (crazy for)of something....(mostly anime...)
One student's English is really solid. "Otaku", really sounds like the Japanese word for "Fan". Just that we can describe the level of the "Fan" by adding words like: casual, obsessive, hardcore, real, etc. It seems the Japanese use the word "Otaku" for any level. I wouldn't get discouraged.
@TheJapanChannelDcom , so living there you must study 10 years to be fluent? I went to a school over there mainly for japanese returnees or foreigners, and some people from korean came to japan in junior highschool but by 1st year senior high school were fluent. So even by living there is it hard to get fluent?
i love these interviews. does that make me Otaku? LOL! i also love anime and action figures but prefer my girls REAL... so, i guess i'm Quasi-Otaku. LMAO
@lianned1994 Anime and Manga is specifically designed to be everything we're missing in our lives....which is in a nutshell, adventure, sexiness, and general happy overtones.
The guy at 2:44 realy knows english :) Shame that not more japanese people know english that well.
I tried talking to the parents of my wife in english, and they realy tried hard and wanted to communicate, but they just couldnt -.- I would love to hear more about Japan from people that are not my wife ^^
This video makes me happy because all these people are really trying to speak English, and I'd say they are rather good at it! They also seem to understand well. It's heartwarming to see how they are really engaged in conversation, rather than not wanting to say anything. ^_^
Next time you do your interviews there is one question that I would LOVE to have answered. Actually it's an argument (a freiendly one) between a good friend and I.
Ask them if they would date Westerners if available or prefer to stick to their own (yes I know you covered this but I would like to hear their reactions). Ask if a Westerner has extreme wealth would it make a difference in their preference for dates, partners, etc., or would they still prefer Japanese only. Thanks.
I like how you don't lead the second girl into the 'expected' answers when she's delayed in her reply...you mention trains, but you get her to give her own reply into the rest. Great vid. THX!
This was an excellent video... I'd love to hear more of them, particularly some candid (even painfully candid, LOL) interviews of Japanese in which they air their views of the USA (its customs, culture, lifestyle, etc.) Japanese opinions of world events would interest me immensely, too. Thanks.
I talked yesterday with some Japanese people they were speaking a realy good english.. In camel smoking lounge zurich airport.. maybe they where businesman ore something
@TheJapanChannelDcom Your fluency depends merely on you, and of course how much practice you take... I know people that can talk, not fluently, but at a normal-slow rate, with little verb conjugation, adjetive, and pronunciation trouble, with 2 years of study, 2 times a week. I also know fluent people with 3-4 years of study, of course, living in japan. I also know almost-fluent people that had no interaction with japanese, that learned by themselves in the internet, lol
So otaku is a nerd?

@0gami1tto
They would think someone who loved Japan that much was great.
They would thank them.
TheJapanChannelDcom 1 year ago 16
@TheJapanChannelDcom
Thanks for taking the time to reply :)

@0gami1tto Because Lucky Star is meant to be sarcastic about *everything* :P Including other shows by the same studio XD

I feel sorry for your lack of basic reading comprehension. I was talking about Weaboo's. Not Otaku's.
Maybe you should learn what you're talking about before you get upset and start drooling all over your keyboard?

@0gami1tto @0gami1tto I think you mean newbs not Otaku.

No, I mean Weaboo's. Like yourself. Read all my other comments chucklefuck.

@0gami1tto Sorry, you didn't have to call me that. It looked like that was the second part of your comment so you are right I should have read the rest of the comments first sorry. I was not trolling.
Maxima0the0Zombie 6 months ago

kenazansuz 1 year ago
@peasent1287 I am sorry. Otaku also means you. I slipped my mind. Otaku(お宅) originally means your house , so otaku sometimes sounds a bit strange and rude depends on a situation. Anata is easy to use.

Finally ,,,^^..That's right/...Otaku is not a thing to be proud about(in Japan atleast..)..My Japanese teacher told me that Otaku, Are someone who is a big fan (crazy for)of something....(mostly anime...)
mariostmb 1 year ago
One student's English is really solid. "Otaku", really sounds like the Japanese word for "Fan". Just that we can describe the level of the "Fan" by adding words like: casual, obsessive, hardcore, real, etc. It seems the Japanese use the word "Otaku" for any level. I wouldn't get discouraged.

@TheJapanChannelDcom , so living there you must study 10 years to be fluent? I went to a school over there mainly for japanese returnees or foreigners, and some people from korean came to japan in junior highschool but by 1st year senior high school were fluent. So even by living there is it hard to get fluent?

do the japanese have another word referring to nerds/geeks which some how differs from otaku?

It's no big deal, the interviewees love mangas and anime as well (interview 1)!
Otaku culture is becoming cool (see Densha Otoko) like geek culture is becoming cool in the West (see The Big Bang Theory)!

Thanks.

mrsebumatica 1 year ago
@TheJapanChannelDcom Your fluency depends merely on you, and of course how much practice you take... I know people that can talk, not fluently, but at a normal-slow rate, with little verb conjugation, adjetive, and pronunciation trouble, with 2 years of study, 2 times a week. I also know fluent people with 3-4 years of study, of course, living in japan. I also know almost-fluent people that had no interaction with japanese, that learned by themselves in the internet, lol
