This isnt Lumiere (obviously, its not French) and it isnt Edwin S Porters (Thomas Edison Co) original either, but rather the remake made by Lubin Manufacturing Co. in 1905
it is BORING to read comments about the fact that everyone in Lumiere's films is dead now. I find plenty of them. If you watch 1905 films what do you expect? Of course they all are dead, but come on, they lived their life, they got their chance, and we still watch them now, after more than 100 years. Moreover, they didn't die all in one day. All of them had their life and their death. It's LIFE.
True...I guess the reason people say that (other than trying to be witty and failing), is because watching old films is a little different than, say, looking at paintings of people and events from the 1700's or something. In films, the people are moving, and you see a small part of their life. When you see, for example, a painting of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, it's not the same. I never heard anybody say "Oooh, the Founding Fathers...they're all dead!"
This is NOT the film by Edwin S. Porter. You can find his version on the Edison-DVD by the MoMA. It is five minutes long. Some changes are for example, that Mrs. Dam has not her name written underneath but the title "Herself". It also shows a little sketch after the presentation of the family.
BTW, there are definitely two film versions of the Damm family. Maybe this one's Lumiere and the other is Porter. I've seen the other one, and the actors are different.
Of historical interest, but what an annoying movie! Everybody has nervous tics, and what's with the handkerchief spreading the sneeze germs all over the head and face. Is that what people did with them then? ew.
Wow.... so classic and fun to watch! loved it, but hey, the last musical note is cut! Too bad that people don't do this kind of short films anymore... I miss the old days (even though I wasn't exist then)
Well. It delivers what it promises.

@pythonist They say it about ALL the old film clips, even Edison's. I think they are just afraid of their own mortality.

If this were a French film it would say Monsieur Dam and Mademoiselle Dam, not Mr and Miss.

The idea for this film comes from a popular song of the time. The chorus went:
"There was Mr. Damm & Mrs. Damm
The Damm kids two or three
With UB Damm and IB Damm
And the whole Damm family"

This is an Edison Company film - the Lumieres were out of film production after 1904.
