This is when a horse was truly trained, they blew him out the day before the Belmont :) ..yup this is why we don't have 3x winners anymore, they are not trained for it. I remenber hearing Barbaro went for 5 mile "jogs" frequently...it showed :)
Try hitting "pause" until the video bar is loaded completely or enough for the play cursor to not catch up. Yes, it could be your connection, but then again, I have high speed and it's also loading really slowly for me right now. The video was quite big in size (over 500MB) and is HQ, so that could be it as well. YouTube can also be quite slow at times due to high traffic on their servers, etc., so it could depend on when one tries to watch videos, too.
Slew was surely one of the all time greats! He had the heart and the will of a champion. I hope Big Brown can give us another triple crown. Its been a long, long time.
I hope you get your 2008 triple crown winner compilation ready, because Big Brown looked like Secretariat today at the Preakness..He could have held a lead for AT LEAST another 1/2 mile if he wanted to
I hereby declare this to be the coolest horse racing post on youtube, but why on earth did you disable the ratings, cf1970? I desperately want to slap 5 big fat red stars on it.....but can't.
The strange thing is that this video has been posted since April of last year, and yet it only has about 3,000 views (and I'm probably responsible for 100 of them...hehehehehe.) I thought there were alot more certified, card carrying Slew freaks in the world like me. I guess not. Maybe it's just because my very first truly memorable sporting events were Slews TC races in '77. ValerianSoup *shrugs*...something doesn't seem right. I know there are some Slew fans that would love this.
Awesome video cf1970 (and thanks for the post), but, all I can say is: WOW! WHAT A GOOD LOOKIN' HORSE! I had forgotten how handsome Slew was. People may argue which horse is the "best ever", but there's one thing no one can deny: Slew was a work of art. About as perfectly built as they come, IMHO.
@FORESTDONS Seattle Slew is intriguing. Secretariat was a physical wonder, who could race PERFECTLY - almost seemed effortless for Sec: he was just a PHENOMENON. Slew seems to have been a Warrior. Barbaro seemed like Secretariat in the KD. It's TRAGIC that Barbaro was injured - what a terrible loss;Barbaro was an amazing & Beautiful racehorse.
i have his grandaughter skedaddle seattle and she just had a foal miss erin she is going to be the first filly to win the kentucky durby prekness and belmont against all the boys i can just feel it she is going to do it hear that slew your great granddaughter is going to beat all the boys
How on earth did I not see this video before??? This is what Horse-Racing needs now!!!. A NFL Style highlight. Chic Anderson had the perfect narrators voice - similar in tone and eloquence to John Facenda. Thank you for this - 5 Stars, Slew is one of the chosen Few
(Yes, Im almost done)My point is this : I was 9 y.o. when I fell in love with Slew beacause of how undeniably special he was. It was obvious to me. You couldnt help but see it. Again,I WAS NINE YEARS OLD!HELLO? How could Arcaro, various so-called "experts",or anyone else for that matter cut him down? And why must we mention the word "underrated" in the same breath as good ole Slew?*le sigh* I dont understand people anymore. Time to move off to Nepal and become a monk.Superb video btw. Thanks.
I was 9 years old when I watched Slew win the Triple Crown on a 13 inch B&W t.v. with 70'S "treble to the max" audio. Somehow,Slew reached through and both hypnotized and seduced me. Im not even sure how. But even though 77 was the last time I saw, heard,or read ANYTHING about Slew,he stayed with me,and last month(30 YEARS LATER),when I discovered you-tube,guess what the very first thing I looked up was. Im not even gonna tell you cuz ya already know. -CONTINUED-
5. Slew beat the next (and to date, last) Triple Crown winner Affirmed not once, but, as the brilliant tatomka reminded us,(in a subtle fashion but with the slightest hint of "Stick that in yer pipe n smoke it") TWICE. 6. Slews aura. That abstract, hard to define, special SOMETHING he had that I find undeniable because of this: -CONTINUED-
Hmmm...lets make us a lil list, shall we? 1. Slew won the Triple Crown. 2. Slew went through the prior races undefeated as well. 3. Slew could contend with a lil ruff stuff and overcome it. 4. Slew could also seduce us into believing winning was so easy it bored him by peforming his carbon copy renditions of "Im simply gonna take off, maintain speed (for light years if required)and win. -CONTINUED-
This was an emotionally inspiring video! I believe in my heart that SEATTLE SLEW was the most complete thoroughbred in the history of the industry. He was as great of a stallion as he was a racehorse. One of his greatest sons was SWALE. I wrote a book all about his life. It is entitled: GRIT AND VALOR: THE STORY OF SWALE.
Glad you liked it. I loved Slew's war dance and also when Cruguet raises his arm in triumph with Slew in full stride just before the credits roll. Awe-inspiring stuff. Slew is in my top 4 of all time. Swale...such a tragedy about his passing, but my goodness, what a wonderful horse he was. Thanks for your input. Take care.
A champion on the track, a champion in the breeding shed, The one and only Seattle Slew! God rest the souls of the Slew as well as Chic Anderson - the greatest big race caller of all-time! Thanks again, cf1970!
Great video again cf. This may sound bizarre, but I think Slew is one of the most underrated horses ever. He is usually one of the later horses mentioned when talking about the all-time greats, but I would NEVER bet against him regardless of the competition. He's just behind Secretariat and Man O War in my opinion.
Thanks for your support and viewership. Glad you liked it. It's not bizarre, Slew IS one of the most underrated legends. I recall Arcaro cutting down Slew saying he was not that great, that he had a weak field of challengers. Granted, most of the 3YO horses in 1977 were not that significant, but The Slew was that just that much better than those that were good mounts. I put him in the top 4. That can change though as I learn more about all these wonderful champions. Take care.
Well all due respect to ole Eddie, but whatever the talent level of of the `77 3 year olds was, Slew convincingly beat Affirmed TWICE. Surely that's some talent. And their second match in the Jockey Club Gold Cup is probably Slew's all-time best performance even though he finished 2nd. To me, his performance in that race shows what he is all about.
Yes, very good point. Slew's performances in those races surely stamped him as a true legend and rightly should quash any doubt people may have had about him. Take care.
Good point. Slew is still underrated. He would be criminally underrated minus the restored good health late at age 4 and the meetings with Affirmed.
Actually, I think frontrunners are underrated in general. They run fastest early in the race and often coast near the finish. It's more dramatic to see a horse charging from behind down the stretch. When I started betting horses I always looked for late runners until realizing the horses in front normally had the best of it.
my best freind has his grand daughter shes a wonderful horse

I disabled the rating on my videos because I grew tired of some viewers unfairly rating them one or two stars. These horses deserve better than that!

I totally agree. Slew is one of the chosen few. Horse racing needs a shot in the arm like this again.
We need a Triple Crown winner in the worst way. That said, I want the winner to be nothing short of legendary. That would be a dream!
