This solo very much has a Buddy rich vibe to it. with the cymbal catches and all, but very much "Dave".

I'm lucky enough to be going to see The Mike Stern Band when they come to London in a couple of weeks.

The reason Dave is the best ever is that all his grooves are wins. There are guys that play more notes and harder stuff, but I have watched weeks worth of Dave's playing and have seen basically zero mistakes or missteps. He always plays exactly what is needed.

I have been watching Dave for years. Just when you think he is at the top of his game and get any better, he evolves yet again. Fantastic, fantastic, skill, ability, technique and creativity. This kind of piece gives me huge inspiration but I will never end up in the same class of drummers that he runs in. Simply awesome!

even though dave is an amazing drummer I cant say I have ever been moved in any way by the music he has played. I feel alot of emotion in his drumming but the music from the other band mates is not that nice of music in most of his playing situations!

No really, one of if not thee best solo by Weckl, he's more relaxed now and not leading as much with his mind. You hear him playing more as opposed to seeing him thinking about all his licks a bar ahead.

He practices so much, you can tell his live soloing is just insertions of all shit he goes over and over, the seams are there.

I think he should do some acid, that would help him learn to integrate more originality to what he's playing.

Stop compare who´s best or not, there is a bunch of outstanding drummers out there, with different styles in different situations. This is anyhow a worldclass statement for the rest of us to study and be inspired by. Thanks for posting it !

I am a very experienced drummer and teacher, in my opinion Weckl is the most technically complete drummer of all times.

We are lucky for living in this days, we still have the possibility to admire this phenomenon in live concerts.

He's getting old but it seems he's playing better than ever.

jojo mayer is extremely good, but scoped/narrowed within how all drummers play.. no doubt he is exceptionally creative and has his own unique style, BUT is still do-able and learn-able...

Iwould suggest drummers like thomas lang, johnny rabb, thomas haake (to name a few) to be technical driven drummers.. if you wanna play like these guys ive mentioned, i would suggest we drop our style of playing, and begin from zero..

I would really love tooo see someone try and reploicate the crazy control/dynamics/speed he has with his left hand in his nerve stuff! First off, JoJo IS one of the most technically advanced MUSICIANS in the world! Just watch his dvd if u need proof. Thomas lang and Johnny Rabb are ALMOST as technically advanced. Also drummers like Lang rely on their technique way too much for what they lack in musicality.

I studied drums (played for 35 yrs), have many of Dave's CD's / DVD's. I am from St. Louis and he's from st. Charles just 20 minutes from where I lived. I met Dave and set right in front of him during a clinic. Dave himself said there is no such a thing as the greatest this and the greatest that. There are too many great drummers with highly polished & technically advanced skills. Dave is in a class of his own, but he's not the best there ever was technically, no drummer can claim that period!

I've never said that Weckl is the best or the most advanced drummer ever.

As I already wrote, I think (just my opinion of course) he's one of the most influential and the most technically COMPLETE drummer of all times.

Nor the faster neither the most advanced, just the most complete.

All I can say, that Dave Weckl is a beast player. Was on his concert yesterday, and I still just can't believe how good he played. He was with Mike Stirn's band, featuring Mike Stirn, Randy Brecker and Dave Weckl. The bassist was aswell awesome.

They played this song on this video too :) Technically REALLY advanced stuff.

Thanks so much for posting this. I am flying to Tokyo on FF miles just to see them Wednesday. No one else on the planet plays drums as well as DW. Many great one's out there but no one comes close and I saw the greats and knew a few. He gets better and better just like Mr. Rich. And Mike. What can one say. To catch him live is like fresh spring water and urban cool and all the great styles rolled into his style.

I grew up hearing Buddy Rich play about 75 times live and up close. I played in place of Gene Krupa at age 15 and studied with Papa Jo, Siticks Evans and others.. All of them were/are great.

Tokyo was great. It is a very subjective and no disrespect to GN.

I have yet to see any drummer create the passion and excitment Buddy Rich did. Can't bring him back to show you live.

He tends to use an upbeat eighth note feel. The high hat is always going on the upbeat eighths. Its got that funky latin feel.

Thanks for Weckl. Great solos. What i like bout Dave's playing is he kinda plays ragged drunken notes here and there when he starts the solo, and then they gradually become a comet flying at high speeds. Super.
