@champschaps you need to read the manual for your particular dishwasher because you're right; some of them will heat the water on their own, and will do it more cheaply than your hotwater heater, but others have to have a hot water connection.
The pink Teflon tape is triple density and not usually used for the type of connection you were making. It's pink so that plumbing and gas inspectors can recognize it.
Also, no big thing, but better to wrap it in the other direction so it tends not to loosen when tightening (clockwise).

what if i connect the dishwasher to the cold water supply, don't they heat up the water while in use?
