I'm really surprised, considering the day and age, and how that kid is one of the only (if not THE only) black guy at the school, it's a surprise how well he fits in with the other students. I suppose the movie didn't have time to focus on equality themes as well.

@mustwinder yes, that's the only thing that I tought as well is Cole couldn't hear, I never thought at all that he was dead. I asked a fireman about the decible rating of a fire engine and was told it isn't at the point where is would deafen a person but the sound is very uncomfortable to the ear drum, that's why dogs howl. I put my fingers in my ears when one goes by.

It took the parents that long to find out their son was deaf? Doesn't seem that believable. Even by 1-2 years they should notice their kid isn't very responsive.

What are you talking about? He wasn't born deaf. It was the loud blaring of the horn on the firetruck during the parade that damaged his hearing. That's what happened.
You do realize that once your tympanic membrane ruptures, it's very VERY painful. If his hearing was lost due to the firetruck's horn, he would've woken up screaming in agony.
Yeah, I realize that. I just woke up screaming in agony upon realizing my own ignorance. It was very painful. Believe me. You're both right. They realized that he was deaf because he didn't respond to the firetruck's blaring horn.
@sisters103, the song around 8:31 is called song Louie, Louie, It was written in 1955 by Richard Berry and became a standard in pop and rock genre`. A recording in 1963 by The Kingsmen is the best-known version
Why not? I'm sure he wouldn't be the first. I personally look like a friggin' idiot when I try to conduct with my right and cue with my left. I HAVE to do it the other way around. Of course, I'm not a conductor...but you understand :-P
Due to some copyright problems with MGM, part 8 and 13 have been taken down. The reason for the copyright: The music in the clips!? The songs: I've Got A Woman and The Pretender are in those 2 clips and I guess they belong to MGM. So they deleted the audio in the video clips. I just decided to take down the clips because watching a movie without audio would be very boring. But if I get a bunch of responses saying that you want the clips still up without the audio, I will put them back up.
He was getting the beat wrong and Mr. Holland had to grab the drum sticks out of his hands and show him again how the beat went. Anyone with musical knowledge would know that...
@MrHollandsOpusMov, well forgive the rest of up poor "ignorant" which means uninformed not stupid, people for our lack of musical knowledge. Something else what might be considered in what's with 4:21. Some of us view it as rude to "grab" something out of the hands of another person, maybe that might be given some consideration too.
@BlueZephyr16, about what's with 4:21, I think Mr. Holland was just frustrated when he grabbed the drum sticks from the hands of the student. The student wasn't even close to being in time with the beat of the song. BUT by some of us, it's considered rude to grab something from the hands of another, teacher frustration I guess..
The movie implied the fire truck horn deafened the boy, while also rendering him unconscious....or it exposed his lack of a response was due to his inability to hear....if it is the second they did a terrible job portraying it. :/
Yes, when I first saw this movie 9 months ago I seriously thought that the baby was DEAD! I started freaking out! But then it turns out he's deaf? Who would've thought right!? It just really looks like he is dead and how the reaction on Iris's face is just...dead.

Nowadays, Louis's friends would call him a "fag" and insert the word "nigga" in the same sentence.
Oh well, I guess it's not just white Americans holding the African-Americans back. You want a colorblind society? Stop mocking the other side.

No, they started to notice that he was deaf because he was unresponsive to the fire truck, unlike the kids around him.

You can use your pepherial vison to help you guide in the formation or you can look at the ground.
Most first time marchers can't march without not looking at the ground for a time.
