I remember this lift happening in person wow, way to go just seeing it motivates the crap out of me for my next chest day... Keep it super big Art. Ps man of steel in 2012
@Superdantraining Thanks for the post Bro it brought back memories and I have to admit, every once in a while I watch these to remember the good ole days. Keep moving that steel Bro its over way to quick!
I was gonna give love to the gym for playing Double Dutch Bus....but then they came back with some Bullisht..I hate when trying to lift heavy and some Unbreak my heart junk comes on....
Anyway nice lifts chief...knocked it out with no bounce and a mini pause...hats off to the Akron crew
@guitarshredder849 I use good technique (contest style lifting) at all times so when I miss a rep it's because I'm not strong enough yet. If you're not having any trouble off your chest you should be able to blast it through any sticking point. Speed is what gets you past sticking points!
@rubbercityhitman Thanks Arthur, Ill keep at it till I get it, speed is one thing I have not incorporated heavily in my training, I will give it a shot.
@BOSS20s Desire is the most important element to getting here and you sound like you have that. I'll be looking out for you... good luck and if you need any advice hit me up!
how in the hell how i just dont understand how in the heck some get so strong i guess i got a ways to go but i just recent decided to stop drinking and im eating like crazy now for three days no so im going to try and stick with that and i know thats whats holding me back drinking every day not good like i do when i lay off booze my weights go up crazy its that im kind of a alcholic a bit i stoped 6 month one time and i could not stop getting strong any wyas good motivation for that
@strongsick286 You have to dedicate yourself and give up a lot to get there... well at least I did. No drink, no staying out late, making sure i stuck to the program all day everyday for years. I miss it but I can't say I wish I was still competing. You sound like you have the most important thing and that's desire. Now all you need is focus.
@strongsick286…good job getting off the booze it helps more than you think i promise. i mean i cut it back to 2-3 a night and it still hurt my training a little. dip was really the killer more me though quit after new years and my bench went up 25 lbs in a month.
@fxb4 thanks man its actually going easy no i dont even want a drink and my lifts going up like crazy no and the training i do i dont think any one else does it like i do it just the kind of training that works for me i have to do it my way
@dt76028 He has the best benching style I have ever seen with that kind of weight with no shirt. I hate bench shirts, it makes benching numbers artificially inflated. This guy is really good.
Real strong bench man..keep it up bro!! Do you ever use a benchshirt as well or do you always bench without? Frankly I like the raw benches even more;).
@Biggmofo I tried a bench shirt back in the late 80's early 90's when they first came out and I didn't like them. I thought they took away from the sport by artificially raising your bench so I stopped using them. To each his own... thanks for the post.
Been years bro... i used to work out with you in Scottsdale, AZ at Maximum Fitness... chow down at Flows on Wednesdays... you looking great bro... keep it up!
LOL! I told him in the gym when we came up with our hand off that he had a certain flare to his! Now he'll believe me because he gets as much pub for his hand off as I do my lift. He is all business when it comes to handling the big weight and I feel safer with 1 Redd Dogg spotting me than 2 or 3 pups! Thanks for the post... the guys keeping us safe deserve much love!
Arthur, just wanted to say that my comment on your spotter was not said to minimize your lifts in any way. I have watched your vids for years and I say that you are the epitome of great form and true, brute power in the raw bench.
No worries Bro! I appreciate you showing us some love. I just dont think most people realize how much a great workout partner/spotter helps when the weights start going up. So I like to make sure I show some love for the rest of the team. Kid from USC almost killed himself with 225 imagine what 600 would have done! Thanks again.
@rubbercityhitman sorry to butt into this convo. but i HATE whenever i have to get a spotter i dont know. and he just launched bigg ass weight onto me, even with a bench shirt on it sucks ass!!! glad to see you have the trust and confidence in your spotter. definetly a great feeling to have!! btw, i give him a 10 on the handoff and flair. and an 11 on the fanny pack he is wearing!!!!!
fucking awesome man one of my true heroes! keep it up I know im late on the comments but fucking awesome im training now and looking to get a big bench one day just gotta work my ass off!
I think Ill throw my two cents in aswell. Yes, you are using performance enhancers, but for your typical person, they think that youre nothing without any juice, that you somehow dont train your ass off to accomplish what you have. That is a very impressive lift, and juice or not, your in a club that has very few members, thanks for the vid!
Do you think its possible to do that weight drug free? I think what people believe is a direct result of what theyve been taught to believe by lying athletes and their own experiences. People who believe that I am drug free point at my drug tested record lifts over twenty-five years as proof while others say I beat the test. I put the video up so that people could appreciate the lift nothing else.
You should see my 600 video! I tried it for a double! Talk about steroids you should see my 225 for five in the 10th grade at 128 pounds! WAIT! I forgot about my hand stand push-ups when I was five! I hit 20 of them once! There's only one way someone can get that strong and stay there for 35 years...
@rubbercityhitman that was a great lift. i use ur videos as inspiration. im 37 and i lift 550 with no supps so i know u dont have to use drugs to get that strong. i was also strong at a young age so i can relate. stay strong.
wow I cant imagine doing that much weight. 600 fucking pounds? wow, that guy is strong. I ruined my elbows from years of benching and I barely topped 185, of course Im a tall skinny fucker.
dude you might want to seriously think about getting into competition, even though I read in a comment that you posted that you don't need someone to tell you what you already know you can lift... but I seriously think you have a shot at some serious records.... if you could drop to 242 the record is 615 raw by jeremy hornstra and he just recently broke the alltime record at 242 the old record was nearly 30 years old and it was 605. You have what it takes IMO
I only do regular bench, incline bench and close grip I have found that for size and power less is better but you have to go heavy and maintain your form! Add heavy lying triceps extensions and push downs and youre on your way!
The video was made in October of 2006 but i hit 580 for the first time in 2003 if I'm not mistaken. I had to work on my pause so it took me a while to get back.
That's a very impressive session my friend...your power out of the bottom is rediculous! By the way, I hit 375 lbs the other day...so 400 lbs is slowly getting closer.
Thanks Arthur. I have posted my progress from 350 lbs this summer to 375 lbs last week and all the things I have been doing along the way. You can check them out if you like. I would love to get your feedback...I would really value the opinion of someone like you who has progressed beyound where I am and has as many years of raw lifting experience as you do.
Just yesterday I did 395 lbs from a lock-out position starting 5" from my chest (video is posted). So, I am getting there...
By the way, I just added speed bench presses to my routine about 3 weeks ago and I have started to notice a difference out of the bottom already. What do you think of speed bench (at 60% of your 1 RM)? I do 10 sets, 4 sets of 3 reps at a narrow grip, 4 sets of 3 reps with a medium grip, and 2 sets of 3 reps with my normal grip - all with about 1 minute in between each set.
I am using 230 lbs for this...rep speed is still good.
I had a speed day for years. I did 2X10 with a regular grip, 2X10 incline and 2X10 close grip bench with two minute breaks between sets. I always made sure my form was perfect and that I had a completion pause and exploded of the bottom. It really made a big difference in my lifts. Ill be keeping an eye on your video so I can watch you break all of my records!
Thanks for the help and kind words Arthur. What weight were you using for your speed reps? (60% of 1 rep max or something different?) Why did you do 10 reps for each set? From what I have read, they suggest not doing more than 3 reps in each set because your rep speed starts to slow and it is not the most efficient training process. What are your thoughts?
I trained for a target weight of 625 and I used 365-375 for my reps. I looked at my second bench day as more of a rep day (practice) than a speed day. Doing it this way enabled me to build an incredible amount of endurance. My lifts over 500 pounds looked as if they were jumping off my chest but the whole time the weight is in your hands youre burning energy. I believe if you want to run on strong mile train for two. Remember though I was using very light weight.
Thanks man. That's great advice. I will have to work those practice days into my routine. When I hit my next wall, I will switch up my speed reps for a practice day and see how it goes.
everyone should rate at least a 5 star for these or dont rate it at all!!!!! this lifter is in a league of his own. bodyweight or not this guy is just a animal.
five 45 plates on each side{225+225= 450} with 2 25 at the end{25+25=50+25+25=100
} 100+450=550. so what i am saying is how did you get to 580? i am NOT SAYING THAT YOU CAN BENCH 580 cause i seen you bench 600 and you are a straight up beast, but what kind of plates can you possilbly use to add 30 pounds all together i do not know. o well, keep on going, you will one day be the best in the world with straight up raw benching.
Get out a calculator and do "your math again" Using your numbers and this time including the bar which weighs 45 pounds you get 595 not 550. How could someone with as much gym time as you forget to add the bar? Then look at the video again. 5-45's each side plus the bar is 11X45 which equals 495. 1-35 each side equals 2X35 or 70 pounds. 495 plus 70 equals 565. Now add a 5 and a 2.5 plate per side 7.5X2 equals 15 pounds. 565 plus 15 brings you to 580. I hope this helps.
Ma094644 One more thing... I will keep training so that I can one day be the best in the world raw, do you have any advice for me? Thanks for your time.
I would say a shirted lift just is right! Why would you want to lift weight you are now able to lift with out a shirt. I understand you are less prone to injury but don't people just think the are cheating themselves? Humm doesn't sound right to me. When I am lifting 405 lbs I like to know that there is nothing between me and the bar. Why would I want to use a shirt than will give me 205 lbs.
thanks for your imput it really hits home i think your a really bright person i will move on with my life now and if i become sucessful i will owe it all to you.
50-100? do you not realize when the heaviest FAKE bench aka shirted bench was 1050, the raw bench aka ACTUAL BENCH was only in the 700s 300lbs added.. stupid shirted benchpressers
your such a pussy all i remember about you at firestone high school is this little jew gerber taking your face and cleaning the mat and then sending your ass to the weght room you loser.
Sounds like you're still mad about the threesome I had with your girlfriend and Mom... I said I was sorry fuck you if you can't take a joke! Besides, it was your Mom's idea not mine! That was twenty-two years ago Gerber get over it.
It was his Mom's idea! I was a high school sophomore and it was my first year wrestling. His Mom invited me over and said Gerber would help me with my wrestling. I go over to his house and his Mom starts putting the moves on me, the door bell rings and his girlfriend walks in says the door was open, sees me and his Mom naked and said mind if I join in! I was a kid and I did it. I apologized, I can't believe he's still mad enough to do a search for me on the net and then post stuff!
Let me rephrase that last comment, I had just turned 17 when I did the Bench, my b-day was Dec. 11 of last year, and is coming up this Dec. Give me your input if you think that is a good bench, I am a SHW and weigh in at 328.7 .... This is my senior year, and you can see the 460 bench if you view my profile. LEt me know what ya think. What were you doing when you were first turning 17? RAW: My bench right now is 455
Those are some real good numbers for a high school lifter and good luck on that 600! When I turned 17 I had a 320 bench at 135 pounds raw and my senior year I hit a 350 at 138 raw both drug free. If you have any questions on your raw training hit me back here and I'll help where I can. Again good luck!
Yo Arthur, how's a 460 bench press as a Junior in high school at the age of 17 (Just turned 17) ... I'm about to turn 18 and I am at 525, the 460 was from earlier this year during MArch at the Texas State High School Powerlifting Meet, I am hoping to reach 600, and yes I am clean from steriods or ANY kind of product that helps. If I reach even 530, I break the heaviest bench in the HISTORY of Texas High School Powerlifting, I owuld like your input.
I'm sorry, maybe you failed to see the comment about that one where I rephrased what I said and fixed it. Open your eyes and read a bit more, and try to read most comments.... as you seem to be looking at ones posted over 5 months ago. And as it is a new Powerlifting season in high school, my bench is at 530..... and when I lift it at state (going for 550) .... NEW record for the Heaviest Bench in the History of Texas High School Powerlifting, as set last year with Jordan Barrett at 525.
Yes, I will get it on here ASAP, I am 18 now. So, 18 @ 530, you can view my 460 @ 17 at the Texas High School State meet. I will get the 530 up here man. You can subscribe and it will tell you when it is on here.
What do you weigh and what's your name? I'm curious to look up these lifts that you're talking about because I've never heard of anyone your age benching that much and I follow powerlifting closely and religiously. Not saying you can't do it, but it's just surprising and I'd like to look into it.
Ohhhhh, I got it. You're talking about a shirted bench. Jordan Barrett's record was not raw. No wonder your numbers are so high. Just make sure you mention that when talking to people because they won't believe you could possibly bench 530 raw in high school. Hell, even with steroids many people don't bench 530 raw in a lifetime.
I never said anything about raw benching. But, it's all good. I just had a powerlifting meet at Lubbock-Cooper High School an I benched 485 there, when I went 515 my elbow rolled in, I really wasn't ready for the bench, but when I was coming down with it, it rolled on me. As soon as I get the pictures, I will upload them in a video form. Like a slide show type. I weight in at 355.6 lbs. And yes I am a big guy, but oh well. Could care less, atleast I use my weight to my advantage and lift weights
Yeah, I was just saying that a lot of the people on the internet and hear "I bench ____ pounds" and they don't know about bench shirts so they assume its raw and they call you a liar about your claims. Obviously 500+ with a shirt on is great for a highschool student. Keep lifting hard man.
That's with a bench shirt and he weighs well over 300 pounds, but it's still good for a 17 year old. But check out my video too. I bench 405 raw with a bodyweight of 239 at the age of 22.
Post your 580X2 and lets see how your spotter gets you fired up champ. My spotter does what he needs to to get me jacked to help me lift. Hit me back when your 580 goes up and show us how it's done! Oh, and make sure your spotter is in the shot!
I don't take the people criticizing the lift and my spotter seriously, I just wish they'd tell me how to get stronger and give some advice on how a 215 pound spotter can better stiff leg deadlift 580 without getting jacked up on adrenalin. As long as there are a few like you out there who know what it takes to get here I'm cool! Thanks again for the post.
My bad dude - I was too fast with my coment. Peace.
youtube has a problem - you can't see who replied to who unless you click on 'view all comments' at the bottom of the screen - otherwise your comment was the first one under the video on the main page & it wasn't apparent that it was a reply to someone...
I was just being a smart-ass to the dude who called me "cuz." I actually think I took his first post wrong and thought he was knocking on you for "arching" by the way you set up. Me... I'm actually just an average 220'er with a 1614 total. I'm looking to hit the USAPL 1660 National Qualifier at my next meet. (If I can make it to nationals, then I would say maybe a little bit better than average)
You are one strong dude. Probably one of the best raw bencher's I have seen.
I like watching people lift a lot of weight without arching their back. I didn't know that arching is legal in powerlifting found that out on you tube but to me a flat backed benchpress I like the best.
I like benching flat because it allows me to hit the right spot on my chest. The more you arch the lower down your torso you go till you end up belly benching. For a raw bencher that's suicide. Thanks for the comments.
Who says that is suicide for a raw bencher. Mendy did 715 raw into his belly, brian siders did 600 for 4 and a 650 bench raw in his belly. Benching into your belly with your elbows in is the right way. elbows out will eventually destroy your shoulders more and you wont be able to hit as much as you could elbows in.
I'm not nearly up to your raw level yet. I 21 and have hit 405x4 with brief pauses and 440x1 touch and go with no bounce. But I agree that touching the chest just feels like it hits the right spot. What does your bench workout usually consist of?
I remember this lift happening in person wow, way to go just seeing it motivates the crap out of me for my next chest day... Keep it super big Art. Ps man of steel in 2012

I see a cameraman floating around, is your training turning into a dvd? If so, Im down for a handfull of copies!
muscleturtle 2 years ago
dude you might want to seriously think about getting into competition, even though I read in a comment that you posted that you don't need someone to tell you what you already know you can lift... but I seriously think you have a shot at some serious records.... if you could drop to 242 the record is 615 raw by jeremy hornstra and he just recently broke the alltime record at 242 the old record was nearly 30 years old and it was 605. You have what it takes IMO

Which assistance exercises do you think are best?
amarone1956 3 years ago
I only do regular bench, incline bench and close grip I have found that for size and power less is better but you have to go heavy and maintain your form! Add heavy lying triceps extensions and push downs and youre on your way!

What do you think your one rep max would be if you just did touch and go?

Touch and go's are against my religion. LOL!
rubbercityhitman 3 years ago
What year was i't when you did 580 x2?
strongmann99 3 years ago
The video was made in October of 2006 but i hit 580 for the first time in 2003 if I'm not mistaken. I had to work on my pause so it took me a while to get back.
rubbercityhitman 3 years ago
How much can your spotter bench.
strongmann99 3 years ago
The last time he maxed out he hit 405@213 I think but he didn't count it because he didn't feel he paused long enough.

I must say it's pure joy and inspiration to watch you lift...

Thank you very much for saying so! We all do this for the respect of those who share in the pursuit of big weight so thanks for the post.

rubbercityhitman 3 years ago
That's a very impressive session my friend...your power out of the bottom is rediculous! By the way, I hit 375 lbs the other day...so 400 lbs is slowly getting closer.
BRETZERR 3 years ago
Thanks for the post and make sure you video that 400 so we can see you when you join the 400 club.
rubbercityhitman 3 years ago
Thanks Arthur. I have posted my progress from 350 lbs this summer to 375 lbs last week and all the things I have been doing along the way. You can check them out if you like. I would love to get your feedback...I would really value the opinion of someone like you who has progressed beyound where I am and has as many years of raw lifting experience as you do.
Just yesterday I did 395 lbs from a lock-out position starting 5" from my chest (video is posted). So, I am getting there...
BRETZERR 3 years ago
By the way, I just added speed bench presses to my routine about 3 weeks ago and I have started to notice a difference out of the bottom already. What do you think of speed bench (at 60% of your 1 RM)? I do 10 sets, 4 sets of 3 reps at a narrow grip, 4 sets of 3 reps with a medium grip, and 2 sets of 3 reps with my normal grip - all with about 1 minute in between each set.
I am using 230 lbs for this...rep speed is still good.
BRETZERR 3 years ago
I had a speed day for years. I did 2X10 with a regular grip, 2X10 incline and 2X10 close grip bench with two minute breaks between sets. I always made sure my form was perfect and that I had a completion pause and exploded of the bottom. It really made a big difference in my lifts. Ill be keeping an eye on your video so I can watch you break all of my records!
Peace.
rubbercityhitman 3 years ago
Thanks for the help and kind words Arthur. What weight were you using for your speed reps? (60% of 1 rep max or something different?) Why did you do 10 reps for each set? From what I have read, they suggest not doing more than 3 reps in each set because your rep speed starts to slow and it is not the most efficient training process. What are your thoughts?
Thanks man...Randy.
BRETZERR 3 years ago
I trained for a target weight of 625 and I used 365-375 for my reps. I looked at my second bench day as more of a rep day (practice) than a speed day. Doing it this way enabled me to build an incredible amount of endurance. My lifts over 500 pounds looked as if they were jumping off my chest but the whole time the weight is in your hands youre burning energy. I believe if you want to run on strong mile train for two. Remember though I was using very light weight.
Peace
rubbercityhitman 3 years ago
Thanks man. That's great advice. I will have to work those practice days into my routine. When I hit my next wall, I will switch up my speed reps for a practice day and see how it goes.
Thanks for all the help...

ALANFISHERCHEATS 3 years ago
five 45 plates on each side{225+225= 450} with 2 25 at the end{25+25=50+25+25=100
Ma094644 3 years ago

RAW: My bench right now is 455
powerlifting101 4 years ago
Those are some real good numbers for a high school lifter and good luck on that 600! When I turned 17 I had a 320 bench at 135 pounds raw and my senior year I hit a 350 at 138 raw both drug free. If you have any questions on your raw training hit me back here and I'll help where I can. Again good luck!
rubbercityhitman 4 years ago
Yo Arthur, how's a 460 bench press as a Junior in high school at the age of 17 (Just turned 17) ... I'm about to turn 18 and I am at 525, the 460 was from earlier this year during MArch at the Texas State High School Powerlifting Meet, I am hoping to reach 600, and yes I am clean from steriods or ANY kind of product that helps. If I reach even 530, I break the heaviest bench in the HISTORY of Texas High School Powerlifting, I owuld like your input.
powerlifting101 4 years ago
How are you about to to turn 18 when you just turned 17? Do you live in some fast-forward alternate universe?
thopkin12000 4 years ago
I'm sorry, maybe you failed to see the comment about that one where I rephrased what I said and fixed it. Open your eyes and read a bit more, and try to read most comments.... as you seem to be looking at ones posted over 5 months ago. And as it is a new Powerlifting season in high school, my bench is at 530..... and when I lift it at state (going for 550) .... NEW record for the Heaviest Bench in the History of Texas High School Powerlifting, as set last year with Jordan Barrett at 525.
powerlifting101 4 years ago
You're 17 year benching 530? I'm not saying you're full of shit, but I would like to see a video. Very impressive.
thopkin12000 4 years ago
Yes, I will get it on here ASAP, I am 18 now. So, 18 @ 530, you can view my 460 @ 17 at the Texas High School State meet. I will get the 530 up here man. You can subscribe and it will tell you when it is on here.
powerlifting101 4 years ago
haha ok liar. how much u weigh 330 pounds lol
rctriplefresh5 4 years ago
What do you weigh and what's your name? I'm curious to look up these lifts that you're talking about because I've never heard of anyone your age benching that much and I follow powerlifting closely and religiously. Not saying you can't do it, but it's just surprising and I'd like to look into it.
Ludichris8531 4 years ago
Ohhhhh, I got it. You're talking about a shirted bench. Jordan Barrett's record was not raw. No wonder your numbers are so high. Just make sure you mention that when talking to people because they won't believe you could possibly bench 530 raw in high school. Hell, even with steroids many people don't bench 530 raw in a lifetime.
Ludichris8531 4 years ago
I never said anything about raw benching. But, it's all good. I just had a powerlifting meet at Lubbock-Cooper High School an I benched 485 there, when I went 515 my elbow rolled in, I really wasn't ready for the bench, but when I was coming down with it, it rolled on me. As soon as I get the pictures, I will upload them in a video form. Like a slide show type. I weight in at 355.6 lbs. And yes I am a big guy, but oh well. Could care less, atleast I use my weight to my advantage and lift weights
powerlifting101 4 years ago
Yeah, I was just saying that a lot of the people on the internet and hear "I bench ____ pounds" and they don't know about bench shirts so they assume its raw and they call you a liar about your claims. Obviously 500+ with a shirt on is great for a highschool student. Keep lifting hard man.
Ludichris8531 4 years ago
Check out his videos. There's one of him benching 460. This kid isn't joking.
thopkin12000 3 years ago
That's with a bench shirt and he weighs well over 300 pounds, but it's still good for a 17 year old. But check out my video too. I bench 405 raw with a bodyweight of 239 at the age of 22.
Ludichris8531 3 years ago
Wow. Jesus you guys are fuckin' strong.

powerlifting101 3 years ago
In the video where you press 460, how much does the bar weigh? It only looks like 225. I guess they must be like 100 lb plates. Diesel!

Yes, they are 100 lbs plates. I have a new video, just pictures though. Me doing 370, then 485, then 500. Check it out.

I like watching people lift a lot of weight without arching their back. I didn't know that arching is legal in powerlifting found that out on you tube but to me a flat backed benchpress I like the best.
bgineat 5 years ago
I like benching flat because it allows me to hit the right spot on my chest. The more you arch the lower down your torso you go till you end up belly benching. For a raw bencher that's suicide. Thanks for the comments.
rubbercityhitman 5 years ago
Who says that is suicide for a raw bencher. Mendy did 715 raw into his belly, brian siders did 600 for 4 and a 650 bench raw in his belly. Benching into your belly with your elbows in is the right way. elbows out will eventually destroy your shoulders more and you wont be able to hit as much as you could elbows in.
White2098 5 years ago
I'm not nearly up to your raw level yet. I 21 and have hit 405x4 with brief pauses and 440x1 touch and go with no bounce. But I agree that touching the chest just feels like it hits the right spot. What does your bench workout usually consist of?
