This is one of the best speeches that explains the essence of the vedas in a terse and short approach. Only such a great disciple and guru could give such a extolling speech. I am sure many people in the audience must have found the contents of the speech unrealistic but it was Swami Vivekanada's responsibility to shed the ignorance of the people in the west and their false beliefs they had implanted in their brains about the vedic dharma and the religions originating from India.

Also, Hinduism is monotheistic, which is not part of the popular belief. Vedas describe God as One and Only. The problem is mistranslations calling forces of Nature as Gods. Hindus call them Devas. The correct equivalent of God in Hinduism is "Paramatma". He is omniscient, omnipresnt and omnipotent.

These practices were not a part of Hinduism. They intruded later. There were reasons for these practices as well. During foreigner's invasion, (say during Mughal reign), women burnt (suicide) themselves, when their men were killed in the war, mainly to avoid letting the invaders to insult their dignity.

Religion did not compel them to do it. It shows the level of pride on respect they had over their men. Later it became a practice, because of some anti-social elements , who used to be in all religion. Now things got changed in the modern world, even in villages. Hinduism doesn't have any hands over these practices.
