It *has* to be played with a slide because what the person does is he slides the slider up to the point where the note *just sounds right* and holds it there for the duration of that note, then picks it up and puts it down for the next note and then slides it to the point where *that* note sounds right, and so on. It's like playing a trombone. You don't have exact detents where the notes are, you slide until it sounds right and stop there.
