My son went to a camp in Hunington In. in '89 or '90. He had a short work out with Rick. and obsearved that Rick followed each shot with a "phantom" shot. Rick said he didn't realize he did that. Son is now a Ph.D. I saw the Marquette game where Rick made his winning shot in OT. He lined up at the foul line with his back to the basket/ broke left atound a pick and took the out of bounds pass shot a nothing but net. I can still see the shot. Dennis H. BSIE '66
rick mount ,,the last great white basketball player,,,the negros have taken over the game,,,,,,rick mount last link to white basketball of the fifties,,,,,whites just dont have the desire to play anymore,,,,but who can blame them,,young white kids dont feel comfortable in cultural enviorment of negro basketball,,,oh well
@nastylefthook1. Owners are mostly white as well as the fans. Likewise, the coaches, GM's, scouts, and trainers are mostly white. What are you talking about atmosphere?
What a great inspiration when I saw him on the cover of S.I.,and read his story in 1966...Too bad there was no 3 point shot then. Much like Paul (USC) Westphal, Rick should have went to UCLA. He would still have been a big fish in the big pond with 3 NCAA Championships.
He wanted to play close to home and that is why he chose Purdue. I am not so sure Wooden would have allowed him to take so many shots at UCLA considering they had a kid there at the time name of Lew Alcindor. You may remember him as Kareem Abdul Jabaar. Purdue was runner up to UCLA in 1969 and were no slouch of a team by any means. Yes, if they had had the three point line in those days, Mount would have score 74 points against Iowa in 1970. He can still make 20 3 pointers in a row.
These old rims were thinner than the breakaway rims of today. In my experience it is much easier to shoot on a non-breakaway rim. A shot that gets a piece of the rim is much more likely to go in with these old rims. Not to discredit Rick Mount's shooting ability though.
He hardly ever hit the rim, it was NBN with Rick Mount, all you heard was swish, swish, swish about 20 times a game. His father and his son Richie were both good ball players, too.
Awesome footage! Wish there was some from his days at Purdue. I remember spending hours in the gym trying to copy his jump shot. In terms of just pure shooting, he has to be considered one of the top 2-3 ever. As perfect form as you can achieve through hours and hours of hard work. Anyone who knows basketball appreciates when someone achieves perfection through practice. Mount's jumper is that kind of perfection!
Rick Mount is the best shooter ever. Everyone else is battling for second place. I'd pay money to watch him shoot in an empty gym. It was a privilege to watch him play.

His 61-point game against Iowa in 1970 was charted with today's 3-point shot - he would have scored 74 points.

He was a better shooter than Bird. Not (nearly) a better player, but a better shooter.

Greatest shooter in high school and college ever. Great to see the high school footage in the old gym with no empty seats. Rosey had it good.
