Check out WITH THESE EYES for answer to the question: What would it mean to the leaders of industry if mankind were suddenly presented with nature’s gift of a sustainable green energy source?
first of all I really appreciate your presence and articulation of applying Budhism to a reality practical life and how interconnectedness is interpretted as interdependence. I'd been a Buddhist all my life and I was very bothered with the bias and misconception of if for years. It really help everyone see that Buddhism teaching applies to all faith because I feel that its not a religion in which has isolated ideals but covering all humanity and our existence in this world.
interdependence project has a amazing podcast that is more on the subjects Ethan talks about. very practical ideas to buddhist values and just being a mindful present person. on ITUNES for free
A couple of years ago I had that that dah...moment, just like you said. I felt exactly like that..."what a moron". I get embarressed thinking about it: how could I have been so dumb for so long? Meditation really helped, along with other stuff, like getting rid of the tv. That instantly frees the mind of masses of clutter, and you get a retreat in your own home. I agree with every word you guys said. Thanks.
Becoming more mindful is powerful..it's not out there hippy mind set...mindfulness is nowness, lucidity, and very good. You don't miss the opportunity that a moment can present.
This show is great and Ethan Nichtern is very inspiring. What a lesson about life that he gives us. We forget ourselves in this hectic world. Power to Buddhism and congratulations to the Alcove with Mark Molaro!
I just realized what I like most about Mark's Alcove Series. He has a wonderful way of revealing the true essence of the subject matter with his questions and leaving the responses unedited. I very much enjoy this series. Thanks Mark!
Lovely, down home and fresh take on mind-first activism. It feels like Ethan has picked up the mantle from people like Bernard Glassman, Jack Kornfield, John Tarrant, etc, without any of the fancy trinkets (bright lights and kenshos) nor the robe nor the bowl.
"There is no Bodhi-tree,
Nor stand of a mirror bright.
Since all is Void,
Where can the dust alight?"
....in the corners, in the cracks, by the door. Who cares if it's dusty? We'll all cough!
when i read works from people like osho, i imagine a man floating on a cloud.. lol. even reading the bible it's hard to take in jesus' teachings because he is portrayed so perfectly and divinely. ethan isn't buddha.. he's just a new yorker out to make a difference.
one thing i'd like to point out is that it's cool to see ethan and how he makes examples out of his own struggles to be a better person in the book or in the interview. like he says, we tend to hold "spiritual leaders" to this impossible standard. he's just like any other guy, really.. and somehow that really helps me connect with his words and see what he's saying in better light.
Wow! Its so cool to see him talking on video!! Ethan is my idol... haha I love his podcast "21st Century Buddhism" and his book One City was great. In this interview, he comes across just as genuine and inspired as in the book and podcast.
This is really interesting. This guy is really emphasizing something that I think needs to be focused on more often in Buddhism: how we can affect our lives and the lives of others positively, and how we can develop that with practice.

oh if we all had trust funds and could afford to teach meditation and be a philosopher in new york city, LOL.... most of us have to work to survive, and can't sit around and meditate.
What strange assumptions behind this email. Knowing Ethan, I can tell you he works SUPER hard as a writer, teacher (about the hardest profession around) AND Community Organizer. Even if all he did was meditate (where the heck did you get that idea?), meditating is super hard work. Ever tried it?

yeah, I have time to watch a video but not sit around and meditate for eight hours and it boils me that he gets paid to meditate...

A lot of hard-working people meditate. It helps me work better, and improves my memory.
