I liked how Alan looks skeptically at Monica and asks how old the crackers are. I'm sure a lot of us have really stale crackers or cookies in our office desks. It's a small touch in the writing that lets us relate to the characters. The kind of things that aren't plot crucial but make it more realistic.
And they really keep him in Character from 80's to 1999 or so(until the writing got really crappy) He's always "Starving"... i.e. when they get caught in the west wing, and when he's "faking" his death he was always hungry at Charity's LOL
