Woolworths Online has nothing to do with the real Woolworths, they just bought the rights to the shop, when a shop on the high street called Wellworths was opening, they sewed them and made them change name, its sad to say that it is working, how people buy from that shop just because it is called Woolworths.

I have such fond memories of Woolworths. remember the candy counters where you bought it by the pound? and the rack of 45's on the pegboard? a simple piece of paper listing that week's 'top ten'? the lunch counter for a clamboat and a milkshake. aah, those were the days for sure. thanks for bring back a fond childhood memory for me. :)
@L1GHTNING123 -Yes Sir! I remember the last one I've been into. They used to have a great lunch counter, they made the best grilled cheese and tomato and tomato soup I've ever had! Many years prior it was a 5 and 10 cent store it had all the original wood decor from the 1900's and the elevator was manual! You had to close the doors yourself. In the old days you had a "Elevator Operator" that used to operate and take you to the second floor. Great memories! RIP!
I found this and it brought a tear to my eye I used to shop at the one in ellenville ny it was a great little store and one of the only place I could get skeleton keys for my old farmhouse I really miss it now.

I am sure the desperate incometant management where hoping to achieve a "volantery administration" by doing so, they coud dump the loss making stores and keep the good, however they were too few and far between (hence why wellworths emerged etc) the name was the only value and the management forgot that.
a badly managed company that dragged other good ones with it. The top heavy incompetant management resting on the name of the company even started a poorly thoughtout refurb without looking at their product range which was a big problem, fingers in too many pies another problem, and as for starting "the big red book" that was a disaster, as recent as 2003 woolworths was major competition with argos, when index went bust woolworths should have ditched noncore assets and cained argos.
I remember when we had a week left till it closed.. quite alot of people bougth some stuff since they weren't re-stocking anymore.. Then when there was 5 days left I felt like going down to my local one but couldnt be arsed.. but I wished I had now because there was hardly anything left in the last 2 days.. DAMMIT!

Woolworths went down because they used Wincanton as their transport supplier, if a bulb went on a headlight of one of their lorries during the period of a night duty, the people we had to call to fix the problem was a company named Pullmans, the cost of this would be approx £300 ( for a £5.00 bulb) Pullmans is owned by Wincanton, Woolworths were ripped off big time, so sad to see it go, i had a good job associated with Woolworths.
They ware waiting for invester but was all to late and had shutdown. If had that one buyer would saved Woolworths but no one had an intrest apart from after the Bust when liverpool took over to online Store.
Now Liverpool got online Store. If Liverpool could start Woolworths of again in another few few year like 2030 would be a shock but as American Man was founder of Woolworths Family he passed bissness on and been going for years and after so long no way could been held much longer. Thanks for this!! I fondly remember Woolworths from my youth in the US. There is still a Woolworths online in the UK and NZ. TJ Hughes has moved into some former UK locations of Woolworths, and it still seems like Woolworths. I tried the store in Derby UK in Jan. 2010.

When I started with the company in 1969 FWW was the fourth largest retailer in the world and the largest food service company in the world. I managed several stores in Calif. The downtown dime store was the backbone of the company. The kiss of death came when the company tried to become a department store in enclosed malls and also tried to compete with Kmart through the Woolco chain. 3 Stores in So. Cal? No competition for SSK.

I like to remember them as a gloryfied newsagents but way better, because you could get almost anything in their, from T.V's to bottles of pop. they even did clothes and paint. Still gutted by the demise of Woolworths in the UK. What killed them was the likes of Tesco stocking similar product ranges and building hypermarkets. When I was a kid, Tesco and Sainsburys sold food - that was it.
In every town there was a butcher for your meat, and a baker for fresh bread, a newsagent for your papers and magazines, a small Tesco, Co-Op or Sainsburys for your tins and other food... and a Woolworths.
...the shop you went first to spend your pocket money. You never went to Tescos - you might bump into your mum!
The first place you went with your 50p pocket money was Woolworths, every Saturday - without fail.
There were toys, there were sweets; Pick and Mix &Treasure Bags & Sherbert Fountains. There were toys to drool over and save for and add to your Christmas wish list. There were pocket money toys, in a special section when you had an array of things you could afford - right now!
...And then as you grew up, there was still something for you at Woolworths - there were singles and LPs and packs of cheap tapes that you could record the Top40 off the radio on a Sunday night.....
So what killed Woolworths was the same as what killed our local butchers & bakers - the greed of companies like Tesco, the growth of huge out of town stores.
But Woolworths was in our hearts and memories and therefore it struck more of a chord - we noticed it more.
All the people who are saying how pathetic it is to be upset about the leaving of woolworths is completely wrong. Sure their are other stores that sell pick n mix and the odd novelties but woolworths has had a very special place in our hearts for many years. And most of us remember woolworths as a treat to go to on nice sunny day. We miss you woolworths do us a favour and make us a comeback :)

Yes, smaety pants BUT the point is it is nothing to do with Tesco, it is run by the government and thus it is an obligation, not a choice of the company, so that point is moot!
Not really, the people who work in Tesco are hardly any better off financially and the only reason they are better off is the NHS, which has nothing to do with Tesco. In the UK eveyone is entitled to free healthcare, even if they are unemployed, it has nothing to do with companies being any better.
As for Tesco's not being ruthless, how about their stores that took a loss on fresh bread, and other products, just to put local bakers, butchers and grocers out of business?

You guys were lucky....we lost all our woolworths in the 1980's. Soon it will be just Walmart and nothing more...as they sell their cheap chinese made crap...yeah for low prices....but lucky if anything lasts more than a year! Yeah, well that's who and others along with Target put them out of business. So sad.. I remember as a kid going there all the time to find the cheapest prices instead of the big name store, and this was before the dollar stores came into existance. And the lunch counter they had! The Last one I remember shopping in was in the 80's in Atlantic City,NJ on the boardwalk and I always loved the grilled cheese and tomato. All gone now!

Woolworths closed for good in the early 90s in the United States (at least in Colorado).
The one I went to was so cool. It has a little malt shop inside. I miss it so much. It was my favorite store when I was a little kid.

Our Woolworth's closed in the U.S. a long time ago... I still miss it. The store had a little restaurant, a fantastic camera counter and wonderful general merchandise. I ate there every time I went to the mall. Their memory still lives in my heart... thanks for making this video!

just to reply to your message Musso3200, Woolowrth wasn;t a supermarket, well atleast in Britain it wasn't. I like to remember them as a gloryfied newsagents but way better, because you could get almost anything in their, from T.V's to bottles of pop. they even did clothes and paint. EVERYTING. allthough a supermarket is like that, they did not sell everyday food, only snacks. or atleest the onse near me did. Will Miss Woolies. It's not the same online!

Still gutted by the demise of Woolworths in the UK. What killed them was the likes of Tesco stocking similar product ranges and building hypermarkets. When I was a kid, Tesco and Sainsburys sold food - that was it.
In every town there was a butcher for your meat, and a baker for fresh bread, a newsagent for your papers and magazines, a small Tesco, Co-Op or Sainsburys for your tins and other food... and a Woolworths.
That was our shop, the kids shop....

The first place you went with your 50p pocket money was Woolworths, every Saturday - without fail.
There were toys, there were sweets; Pick and Mix &Treasure Bags & Sherbert Fountains. There were toys to drool over and save for and add to your Christmas wish list. There were pocket money toys, in a special section when you had an array of things you could afford - right now!

...And then as you grew up, there was still something for you at Woolworths - there were singles and LPs and packs of cheap tapes that you could record the Top40 off the radio on a Sunday night.....
So what killed Woolworths was the same as what killed our local butchers & bakers - the greed of companies like Tesco, the growth of huge out of town stores.
But Woolworths was in our hearts and memories and therefore it struck more of a chord - we noticed it more.

All the people who are saying how pathetic it is to be upset about the leaving of woolworths is completely wrong. Sure their are other stores that sell pick n mix and the odd novelties but woolworths has had a very special place in our hearts for many years. And most of us remember woolworths as a treat to go to on nice sunny day. We miss you woolworths do us a favour and make us a comeback :)

Not really, the people who work in Tesco are hardly any better off financially and the only reason they are better off is the NHS, which has nothing to do with Tesco. In the UK eveyone is entitled to free healthcare, even if they are unemployed, it has nothing to do with companies being any better.
As for Tesco's not being ruthless, how about their stores that took a loss on fresh bread, and other products, just to put local bakers, butchers and grocers out of business?

It closed casue of one simple reason. U see, this whole credit crunch thing is caused by Mainly Illegal imegrants.If there were none of them, we wouldnt have to pay them to sit on thier asses all day doing nothing! We would have more money and would be able to spend it on sotres, lik woolworths.
I really do hope that Woolworths re opens as a MAIN store.

i went there when it was closeing on the last day it was really empty most of there stock was gone and very cheap and most stuff was boken i walk in to the toy section and all the toy boxes were apart and they was like maths kits and sports bags on the floor there were even poeple rubbing stuff most was dvds but bearly any 1 cared like two poeple who work there chased them out of the shop even +

I remember going to the woolworths store in Downtown Los Angeles on 7th and Broadway, back when I was in high school. The store has since closed and is now a foot locker.
