think about it for a second. if a cow sees or smells you she is gonna bark and then split quickly. if in a calling situation you have a hang up because the bull isnt seeing what he heard or came to see, the nervous grunt is the sound he makes to let you (the cow or bull) know to show yourself. then if you dont show yourself that bull is gonna leave. however i'm sure that bulls will bark as well but its all in the context of the situation and difference of the bark vs the popping grunt sound.
You described the meaning of that call clearly when you said, "...we were walking through...and then he was gone...." It is the alarm bark... They bark because they are alert...bulls bark like cows...it is the same meaning...
@elkmonk There was more to it than that! There is a difference in an alarm bark & a Popping/Nervous Grunt. An Alarm Bark is a warning! The other is not! It merely wants a visual or identification of something it saw or heard but cannot get a solid identity on it! If you watched all that DVD in its entirety you would eventually hear the explanation better. Thanks for your comments! ElkNut1
