I always thought the singer was 3-4 years older than the girl. When she was 6 he was about 9/10 and they played together and he was like a 'big brother' to her, when she was 10 he was 13/14 and didn't like her much cause she was a silly kid and he was a 'grown up' teenager and they "didn't like eachother', when she was 13 he was 16/17 and she probably had a teenage crush on him but he didn't feel that way back and she was a 'funny valentine'.

Not everything in this world is so gross and creep as what some of you were thinking... You gotta remember this song came out back in the 60's Things were different back then... @MigeulP I dunno...even without him being an actual brother, there's some crazy age difference from how the lyrics sound. That and he seems to have been dreaming of this moment (when she reached 16) to have her...all the way back from when she was a little kid.

I'd say, at the least, this song is about a very much older guy watching a kid grow up to 16, probably dreaming of being with her, and that she's 16 and he's 40 (who knows?) things are "sewn up" for her for life. Ick.
