It's so hard to beat mass mutas. The only thing you can really do is(like Husky said) hurt the zergs economy early.... Which isn't always very easy.

What I've noticed is that protoss anti air is sort of lacking. Granted this is the ideal situation for pheonixs, but if you're anything like me, you feel really wary to put down a stargate.

All protoss teir 3 dies to dedicated anti air, and it doesn't have anything particularly effective vs armored air. Voidrays are just so expensive.

@japphan well if you scout then get carrier tech. Because of the AI the hydras shoot the interceptors which is basically pointless. And you have time to get them cos hydra tech takes a while

To get hydra tech is actually really quick, hydra den takes no time to build. And you, as protoss have to defend against speedlings before that, which will make your tech to carriers slower.

btw, yesterday I faced something like the strat you describe. I won onesidedly with speedling into hydra roach..

@japphan Speedlings dont require any editing to your build at all, as long as you go zealot then sentry as your first two units you can wall off your ramp and completely nullify speedlings. And yh you would have won one-sidedly if he went for phoenix, they suck against anything other than speedling muta. If he had scouted with his first phoenix and seen hydras den, then gone tech to carriers it wouldn't have been so one-sided.
