  • Stop complaining? You're the one who is going to Japan to work, they're not asking you too so why whine about stuff you made yourself? If you want a teaching job and get pay on time, why not just stay in your own country and work? Unless of course, you don't get good pay...

  • One thing you must understand is that Japan is world's largest foreign aid donor and is second largest contributor to the UN. However, the government, pension system, etc., in Japan are bankrupt or rather "in the red." So there is a great deal of resentment about wasted tax on foreigners, for example:

    1. A JET program teacher gets paid much more than a Japanese teacher with similar qualifications.

    2. A foreign teacher commits a crime, wasting tax on police, immigration, deportation, etc.

  • A. Japan is no longer the biggest ODA

    B. The JApanese Govt. does a good enough job wasting money ion useless roads and redundant (Repeated) tunnels- look at the new subway from Ikebukuro to Shibuya. Is it needed? Why not just close the loop of the Marunouchi Line?

    1. you are grossly mistaken on the pay scale.

    2. the waste is negligible (minimal in case if your Nova lessons gave you no vocabulary))

  • Japan's taxpayers buried resentment:

    1. The nuclear missiles that North Korea directs against Japan were built with components smuggled out of Japan on a ferry and cash stolen from Japanese credit unions.

    2. Japanese politicians waste hundreds of billions of yen on public works projects in China and Korea in return for bribes from those governments.

    3. The Chinese and Korean people aren't even informed that Japan contributed the money to build their airports and subways, for example.

  • 4. Japan pays to clear Cambodian landmines, but the government takes the money without doing the work and more Cambodian children die and are maimed.

    5. The South Korean government teaches Korean children that Kim Jung-Il is a great man and Japan should sink to the bottom of the ocean.

  • I was invited to parties of Nova teachers in Japan. They are just mindless losers and bimbos obsessed with drugs, sex, and frequently changing sexual partners. They are spreading STDs in Japan and selling drugs to underage children.

These unprofessional people have no teaching qualification. They can't teach English, and they are definitely not worth the money.

  • The "bottom of the barrel" are the Nova "teachers." Now Nova went bankrupt, ^-^ and these disgruntled teachers try to seek overpaid jobs at other language schools. But even the crap schools like ECC and Geos have minimal standards. LOL! So these unemployable losers spend their days expressing hate toward Japan on YouTube.

  • MESSAGE TO DISGRUNTLED EX-NOVA TEACHERS IN JAPAN: DON'T BE ANGRY ECC, GEOS, BERLITZ, ETC. WONT GIVE YOU A JOB. YOU HAVE NO QUALIFICATIONS.

In Japan there are many foreigners who are invited as our beloved guests to teach English. Normally, they are paid double Japanese salaries, because they have an amazing qualification: they happened to be born in an English speaking country. Wow! Apart from that, they are unqualified and unemployable at home.

  • because Gaba ECC, GEOS, BERLITZ, ETC have no qualifications necessary either.

  • If foreign teachers organize, create their own standards, and police themselves, they can make their profession into a respectable profession, like law and medicine in Japan. They also need to petition to support teaching by foreigners as a long-term career in Japan.

I am not saying that 1 in 10 or even 1 in 100 Nova teachers sell drugs to students. But even one bad teacher is too many.

  • *wouldnt starve...

that was pretty much the only source of food for a while... I felt bad for the japanese students too cause many of them took out loans to be able to get English lessons at Nova, only to be screwed over in the end...

  • Nova instructors have "university" degrees? Cambridge, Harvard, and Tokyo are universities. But 90% of universities are just universities in name only with no real standard. Do you mean accredited universities? Accredited by whom? I can't trust those crackerjack degrees.

Why do you tar all eikaiwa teachers with the same brush?

Nova, Aeon, and Geos employ the shit teachers.

Berlitz employs the better teachers. Also, if we consider Gaidai, they employ better teachers.

  • Nova came to my university in June to recruit new members. I along with about 30 other people came to Japan in August, only to find that they never paid us our first check because they ended up going bankrupt before we could get off the 3 month probation. I stuck around till the very end, cause I didnt have any other option and thankfully the students knew the situation and brought food in for the teachers so we would starve...

I wrote a song about Nova, feel free to check it out.

  • A waste of time, you hit the nail on the head with that one vancityandy. I remember talking to my mum about the possibility of the company going bankrupt well before we were paid late and she said, "you know you won't get paid if that happens". I should listen to my mum more carefully.

  • corporate loyalty is a sham you lost in your naivety to protect yoru criminally minded company. NOW you all should file individual lawsuits with the bosses who knew they were unable to pay you so they in effect Stole from you because it was a conscious effort to take from you with no compensation so you should file criminal lawsuits! to get yorupay

  • Not only that, but after watching the last three videos, hearing the teachers saying they only had a few thousand yen in the bank, just makes me laugh at their ill preparedness. Living in a foreign country means you need to have savings. I lived in Japan for two years and found it easy to save after you stop eating and spending money like an american. *shrug* Im not saying its a crappy situation, it sure is, for all of them, but part of the problem *IS* the teachers.

  • If the company was "so evil" and was doing wrong to the students, then why did they continue to support the company? Really, they are complaining about the companies "wrong doings," AFTER this happened? It's just the painting the bad guy black-switch of blame here. You worked there, so YOU are responsable!

  • that is what i am saying. If you worked for more than 2 months for a company that was known to be sketchy what do you expect? you should have been looking for employment elsewhere at a RESPECTABLE company. If you Know the company is screwing the stupidents over then what makes you think you are not next?

  • 毎年、JETプログラムでやってくるかなりの数の英語教師の中には、不謹慎にも生徒、つまり中学生と性的な関係を持った者も少な くない。

Every year there are several teachers who come to Japan on the JET program who get deported owing to sexual relations with junior high school students.

  • What i was trying to say is after a short while all people are highly aware that Nova, GEos, Gaba Aeon.. are scams taking around 7000 yen per lesson and giving teacher 1200 yen! or there abouts. the lesson is shrunk on a regular basis and the evaluations are don e in class to shrink break times and to squeeze every yen from the poor students and not pay their teachers adequately. The office staff sees the frustrated students and is not allowed to refund them, you are supporting the opressors

  • True!

  • Hope you can get another job. Best of luck.

  • In between lining up job interviews and organising a holiday for my family in Novemeber, I've been taking on private students. Things are starting to look up. Thanks for the support.

  • I had a watch of to your videos and I can understand your commitment to your students, but you needed to remember that its your life and your money that was owed to you, and still is. I praise your candid view about NOVA and wish you all the best in you next step.

  • Thanks Steve, I went on leave about a week before the company went bankrupt, the day it did I went down to the branch put a small advertisement up. My students now have the benefit of continuity with me at a lower price and I get cash in hand. Thanks for the encouragement.

  • so come back when you get paid :P bwhaahaha suckers you should have known better from the first month and should have bailed on Nova and Geos and Berlitz and Gaba who are only interested in making and keeping money.

  • I probably won't be getting paid. I'm sure though the Japanese tax payer won't be happy about footing the bill for a fraudulent and cowardly CEO. Why do you study English? Did you study at any of the schools you mentioned?

  • "I have a responsibilty to my students?!" hahahah... u gimp!

  • ... that doesn't extend to working for free.

  • Exactly by us not working the students are out there English learning money. We are out of are rent and food money.

  • our

  • That's right. They lose their hobby, we lose our income and livelihood.

  • I feel for you as an ex-Nova teacher. There are other companies that will offer you better if you just take the time. Things will turn out better for you. You have a lot of integrity.

  • I really hope things work out for you, but the situation does not appear to be getting better. If I were you, I'd start looking for another job (even if only as a backup plan).

Anyway, hope things improve for you. Good luck.

  • Thank you, I had planned to leave Japan at the end of the year. I was hoping that things held firm until then, it looks like I might be taking an early vacation and spending more time with family and getting to see a bit more of Japan before I leave.

  • This is an EX NOVA employee. I stopped working for NOVA on the 15th on July, TWO pay periods have gone by and NO PAYCHECK. This is a warning for those who are thinking about quiting. DO NOT rely on the final paycheck.

  • I have heard plenty of stories just like yours PukkPukk and I know that there are more to follow. I guy that I work with put in his resignation before the pay delays, he is unsure if he will receive his final pay check. I know that if I quit or the company goes down I will probably only get a fraction of what I am owed.

  • I'm in the same situation.

Make sure you're handing out your contact details to as many of your "favorite" students as possible. Hopefully they'll need private lessons as much as you do. Be open about it too, what's Nova going to do ? Fire you ?... that could be the best way out anyway.

  • Cheers Heshta, the students have been fairly up front about it themselves. Some of them have said if the branch closes they won't move to other schools, they'd prefer to have lesson with us. I know I'm probably not going to get the sack, the guys in the AMG room are far to busy for that. ;-)

    Keep your chin up mate!

  • i'm another poor bastard who's working for nova. Chin up mate.

  • Solidarity brother. You too, hang in there.

  • Just think positive now. I'm a Nova teacher in Akashi.

  • Strength in numbers, where is your AT? Is he still going in to work?
