  • nice vid man! i got two ricks, a 4003 and a laredo. love them both-4004 has lots of bottom end but the 4003 is more unique. glad you are talking tech here, most rick owners only seem to talk about colour. not a slap guy (i love hearing OTHER people do it like marcus miller etc) but you do it well. i play blues and doom metal, usually with a pick. didn't pick ricks for the name, they have the tone and comfort factor i like. love your work.

  • Wow, that looks hard as shit to get a really good tone out of a Richenbacker, but you made it look easy. You're such a BOASSS!

  • who says you can't slap a Rick ... here's proof you can !

simply awesome as usual, keep em comin' Marlowe

  • Anybody who says you can't do this or you can't do that on a particular model or brand of bass only says it because THEY can't do it.

  • Hey MarloweDK, would you say that the Rickenbacker 4003 is a good investment? It's a pricey bass...is it worth it and why or why not?

    Thanks.

    -Steven-

  • @gamecubedude03 I'm not him but I'll help you out, and its been a month since you posted this comment so youve probably already got something else or this, but just in case, what kind of music do you play?

  • @PANICBLADE I haven't bought anything yet, luckily. Haha. I play alot of different things, mostly heavy alternative (almost punk/grunge), rock, and some metalcore. My favorite band is The Beatles, and I love McCartney's tone. But I'd never heard a first hand review from anyone about whether the bass is worth the fat price tag or not, apparently there are truss rod problems and stuff like that. I really want one though. Can you say dream bass?

  • @gamecubedude03 ok judging from your influences i guess you take from Lemmy and Cliff Burton too right? well the thing is their rickenbackers were/are super modded, like cliff had a gibson eb pickup in the neck of his and something like a weird strat pickup in the middle, stuff like that, new bridges and hardware for both, different frets, Lemmy got some crazy pickups too. so heres the thing, the 4001 was and is utter shit, the 4003 fixes a lot of those problems.

  • @gamecubedude03 4001 is basically a 4003 with a flawed truss rod system, string breaking bridge, weak ass frets and pickups constantly stuck on rickosound, which is ok but very frail, not for heavy stuff. rick got smart, and fixed the hardware and made more modern beefy pickups to match what people were using them for. with all of these enhancements, the bass has great tone and playability, but it is NOT worth the money. check out the rickenbacker vs precision bass video with the long haired guy

  • @gamecubedude03 also if you really like pauls tone then pick the songs you like from him and see what he actually used to record them, like helter skelter was recorded on a fender six string bass by john lennon, and a lot of his stuff was using a violin hofner bass and a fender precision. the jazz bass is also pretty cool. gibson has some amazing stuff like the thunder bird and the eb-1, which are aresome for a "Cream" like tone. but something you might really want to check out is G&L.

  • @gamecubedude03 Check out the l-2000 and the sb-2, i have an sb-2 and its perfect for me, its like what i HOPED a rickenbacker would be. the l-2000 has a lot of tonal options but is active so that might be a turn off. both sets of pickups are very powerful and can get some great rock/metal tones while still being versatile as hell. Frankly the ricky looks nice and has come a long way but it still doesnt stand up to others interms of reliability, playability and tone.

  • @gamecubedude03 and this thing does have truss rod issues, 2 trussrods are not a bad thing but they are a necessity, they dont have them because it works better. basically in my opinion ts a fantastic instrument but nowhere NEAR worth the money or wait time to recieve one. If the p bass and ricky were the same price, id go with the p bass still because its easier to work with technically, and while playing, plus it sounds all around better in my opinion, but everyone is entitled to their own.

  • @PANICBLADE the closest to a ric is a lakeland in h/s profile or ajazz with active p/u like geddy's model for tone applicability

  • @gamecubedude03 not to mention through neck basses, while sounding great are a huge risk. and i know people are gonna say things like ive had my 4001 rick for 900 years and nothing bad has happened, but they probably didnt travel to many different climate areas, or spend hours on planes or leave the instrument under hot lights, or they have amazing techs do that stuff for them. also when you replace your frets on a rick which is soon because the frets are small/weak, it will be suuper expensive.

  • @gamecubedude03 just remember there will always be someone who will say otherwise and thats fine, thats how you decide, theres stuff wrong with fenders and ernie balls and g&ls too, but you asked if I thought the ricky was worth it. I do not because it seems that its never good enough on its own for anybody, its design is inherently flawed, and its pretty uncomfortable to play for some. Amazing bass? YES. Worth $2,200? Not by a long shot. if you have a ricky or still want one more power to you.

  • @PANICBLADE Dude go start your own blog or something.

  • Wik. Id.

  • ya i cant get a the slap sound on the upstroke

  • but why the fuck dont i get it with the up-move of the thumb -.-

  • dude that is some killlller tone man

  • God you'd be fun to jam with

  • Marlowe, i have the same ric... when i slap it though it makes an annoying popping sound like a string is hitting off the pickup. your not getting that popping sound at all. have you ever noticed that when slapping the ric ?? or maybe im playing it too hard

  • @167rockstar You gotta learn to thump. You will no longer get the sound. I had the same problem, and it is due to improper technique. If you look like Flea when you slap, you're gonna get that annoying popping sound.

Watch Larry Graham videos. They help a lot as well to understand proper thump and slap technique.

  • i have a 5 string esp ltd D-5 i love slappin on... not an ideal slap bass, but when you get the muscle memory down you can get some sweet sounds out of it

  • @Cracksmacknhash I have found ESP LTD's to be excellent for slap...my les paul style ltd is the most slappable bass i own!

  • You don't have to pay over $2000 for one of these! I looked around on the internet, and found on Ebay a brand new Fireglo Rickenbacker 4003 for $1200 dollars, and it ended at around $1500. With warranty. Sadly, I didn't buy it, and I still kick myself for that. However, a few months later I looked around again, found a guy who said he'd beat any price, and found another which claimed a price of $1500 with $600 dollar tax. I didn't tell the other guy that, and got a jetglo for $1500.

  • @DarkWolf5250 can you tell me where u get that?

  • Nice little groove my brother...

  • 27 people are bitches

  • Rickenbackers are cool

  • when the beat started i thought the beat was so dull, but when your bass came in, the beat become so epic. ur bass playing is magical

  • Sweet ass groove man

  • Mmmm, i sure would love to shoot porn with that thing...

She even has two "jacks" lol

Jk, its and awesome bass with beautiful tone and design and i have always desired it :P

  • I miss my 75' 4001...big time.

  • my bassist has got a beautiful ric with the old horseshoe pickups, it sounds fantastic with some good rockin tunes, you should check it out, just put this 3jmQ9gHZ8aE after the v= in the url.

    also, feedback please!

  • I play guitar and now am starting to get into bass ITS SO FUN

  • Would you say that the Rickenbacker is the best bass? Or close to the best?

  • @MarshallRoberts one of the best, music man basses and some fenders can be compared, it's more what kind of feel and sound you like

  • you dont deserve that fucking bass tool

  • Why slap?? I don't think it's a good idea in a rick

  • @bb3500 what is slap this style already has a name it's called thumping forget about the haters and keep on (Thumpin my friend) stay thirsty

  • lars ulrich plays bass now?

  • @megadeth1818 wtf ulrich plays drums

  • are you using any effects or is that your clean sound

effects such as a compressor maybe?

  • @aSimulatedHigh Amp sim, compressor, chorus, stereo ambience, the works...

  • @MarloweDK how high/low should the action be to slap

  • if i played bass i would want that one!

  • Dont suppose anyone has a spare £1600 they want to lend me so i could afford one of these? He he he he he

  • @norman1989joiner i wish i could lend you 1600 but if i had it ,i would get one of thoose myself ^^

  • what amp r u using?

  • Can I ask you a question Marlowe?!

How do you play those really quick notes you play around 0:03 -0:005?

Looks like it involved double thumbing and popping with many fingers..but I just wanna know how! It sounds so siiick!

    cheers! :)

  • @bananafingerrrs

If I'm not mistaken, he's playing triplets play two notes via double thumping followed closely by a pop. In other words, thumb down, thumb up, pop. It's actually not very difficult when you get the hang of it.

  • This is very, very good. (Though when it ends, I expect Seinfeld and Elaine to start arguing about something stupid).

  • dam thats really good, i play bass for a metal band i think im pretty good. but i still cant get the concept of slap, i really really want to play slap but every video i find is no help. but seriously you rock

  • Always wanted to play bass (a sqiuer electric was cheaper alas), this doesn't help too much :( (awesome playing btw), that and rickenbackers look badass.

  • Why would anyone dislike this :O

  • @MrSTrotter583 27 lead guitarists

  • ......I want one......

  • Funky Monk :)

  • That's some funky shit.

  • how much is the guitar? I want one.

  • @Fiddstx the cheapest rickenabacker bass ive seen is around 2000 euro, second hand

  • You are a master at work. I love Rics.

  • what kind of amp is this going through?

  • is your pickupcover removed? and are you playing with roundwounds or flats?

  • @Canadianvibe Cover removed, and I use round wounds

  • amazing!

  • That's it! I'm getting a bass even if it kills me (or kills my income for a few months, lol)

  • Awesome! Did you put a chorus on this tune ?

  • Rickenbacker means FUNK

  • Nice tone, good riff. consider it 'liked' :)

  • Man, I wish Ricks weren't so darn expensive. Great tone

  • @Martiluk1 Dude for real, guess my Ibanez srx2ex2 will have to do. :(

  • Super cool funk bass !!!

  • Thats what I CALL SKILL MAN!!!!!

    EXAMPLE IN THIS VIDEO.

  • 1.08-1.12 sounds unreal! Great stuff.

  • @bucket34 agreed!!!

  • Sounds like the theme song to that old tv show Night Court.

  • very nice

  • Nice darts!!

  • i though about buying one of these and now i ive seen this vid Im going to order one this weekend.

  • @IgniteTheProphecy I know ;)

    Bass guitar*

  • Great !!!!

    Fucking good guitar !

  • is this on the 'rick.o.sound' or on the normal??

  • Never saw a Ric gettin slapped, sounds good, and I'm a Fender Jazz Bass man . Yo, Syndome666, I understand. U gotta git another Ric, bro ! Played a gig at a hole-in-the-wall years ago: we're on break, fight breaks out and someone fell on my '79 Jazz Bass (natural, maple board) . That still tears my heart a new ass!

  • pff MarloweDK is waaaay better than flea.

  • Very good, you rocks!

  • Nice bass! Nice tone! Nice playing!

  • I purchased a rickenbacker 4003 (maple glo) and its being made but anyway marlowe dk is awesome and why did his account get suspended a while ago?

  • MarloweDK+Paul McCartney= would be awesomeness

    excellent as always marlowe

  • Miss my Ric, traded it for a Warwick Vampyre SN 5 string which later got stolen. It's like the Ric put a curse on the next bass I got.

  • stop this shit now man, your blowing my fucking mind!!!

  • sick awesome! i have some trouble slappin my ric just cause the action need to be so low that the high end of the neck looses alot of it power do you find you have this problem??

  • ah man you also got a rickenbacker i'm so jealous of your basses man

  • dude holy hell how badass can you get? Rickenbacker AND amazing slapping?? jeez dude don't make too many videos god'll get jealous

  • Goddamn nice groove you got there, good job!

  • Always amaze me man. HOw do you even double slap... I really cannot do it. Gorgeous ric by the way?

  • I want to do that *Coverts*

  • You make it look so easy. Great job. Do you have a teacher or did you use a particular book? What's your method?

  • makes me wanna throw away my guitar and get a bass for real

  • I kept my guitar, but i recently bought a bass and a decent bass amp combo, no regrets :)

  • @Killzor420 You should, way too many people play guitar. We could use some more good bassists in the world

  • Yeah I know what your sayin, Actually. I play Guitar, Some Bass and I was raised playing the drums since I was 6. So I got some flow. I dont own a bass though. I went on tour with a local band and the bassist taught me some riffs and junk. Nothing serious though. But I love the bass and once I get a decent paycheck im getting a nice setup! I want to master all instruments I enjoy. Its what life is about. Right?

And remember.... KEEP THAT FUNK ALIVE! - Bootsey Collins

  • @Killzor420 I FUCKING AGREE

  • @Killzor420 youre only 2500$ from that bass

  • @Killzor420 do iiiiiiiiiiiiitttt

    but dont forget your roots!

  • nice bass!! nice groove!! no more to say.....

  • i just got a hofner but when i get alot beter im hopeing to get a ricky and duel them with my friend! XD

  • @megakiller999

I had a Höfner bass and I sold it twenty years ago, and I've never stopped kicking myself for selling it.

  • i dont care what anybody says... but that bass is one of the best basses to play... if you dont believe me then play one for yourself.... it changes you... not even ibanez could come up on top...

  • wat about a fender bass

  • dude not like i didnt want a ric befor but just for that tone of slap i must have one now, what gear and settings did you use to get that tone other than the ric?

  • woow something completely different, got rickenbacker for years but never slap on it, not that i didnt try :)....... usually on some funkier bass like warwick......as far as i can tell ur the first that i saw slappin so good on ric......awesome!!!

  • This is Geddy Lee meets Flea, Ric slap

  • @iloverush123 i never saw flea doublethumping

  • I'm dying for a Rick, too!!!!! I won't stop until I get one!

  • .. Im with u ;)

  • If we could get MarloweDK and Flea to jam together and film it, that'd be the greatest YouTube video of all time.

  • @SimuLord i cant agree more! :D

  • @SimuLord and fantin from Deep kick and steward copeland

  • even better if we could get flea addicted to playing rics!!

  • @SimuLord and larry grahm

  • @SimuLord dont forget (if he still was here) john entwistle

  • @SimuLord YES

  • @SimuLord

probably not actually, as they both are doing very similar things musically... they would just get in the way of each other. how about Marlowe or Flea with Jimi Hendrix or John Coltrane?? that would be something

  • @SimuLord Flea is too aggressive with his bass.

  • @SimuLord While flea is a fantastic bass player, he is not the best funk player, people like Victor Wooten and Marcus Miller would kick his ass any day.

  • @SimuLord Try Vic Wooten and MarloweDK. Thats a more prestige duo. :)

  • @SimuLord Flea is very good, but not nearly as versitle as MDK. MDK would blow Flea out of the park...seriously. But much respect to both!

  • get me a shovel, cause i can dig it!

    nice playing man!

  • That was really great! I'm a pretty good slapper/popper, but I never had much luck poppin' on my Rick bass. That was really nice.

  • I dig your playin' man. Didn't know a Ric could be so funky. Keep on slammin' . You Make it look E Z.

  • Rickenslap! <333

  • awesome.!!..Happy New year... *\o/*

  • it's amazing)

  • dude, i have the same bass... its amazing right... i love every second playing it...

  • was he the seinfeld bassist??? j/k... great sound! I REALLY WANT A RICKENBACKER BASS!!

  • i hate and love you at the same time

  • Anytime I get lazy with my bass practice, I only have to watch one of MarloweDK's video's to inspire me again. Many thanks.

  • wow

  • GO THE JETGLO'S!

I love my Ric, but I can't get the string height right. When I slap it either hits the pickup or it hits the top cover of the bridge pickup.

  • are you in a band? if not, you should join one. can't let skills like that go to waste :)

  • Nice stereo effect on the recording. Lush !!

  • amazing mate!

  • agreed, this is rick slap done right.

  • Comment removed

  • damn....im dying for a RICK...so f°°°ing beautiful

  • while ago, i considered buying a ricky, my friends said it would be useless other than for rock, until i showed the versatility of it, prior to buying it, i showed them this clip..... yep, I SHOWED THEM ALRIGHT! lol. obviously they've never seen Rick James and MarloweDK funk it out..... never looked back. :)

  • I want a ric so bad!

  • I usually hate slap but on that Rickenbacker the way you play it is great.

  • Comment removed

  • got any cool sites or tips for ppl wanna start slapping?

  • ummmmmmmm practice simple before compliacted and expect blisters if that helpz im no marlowedk tho

  • THis remember me Larry Garham.

    Awesome!

  • ferdgsfygfgd bullshit whatever asshole. Marlowe is incredible on all levels.

  • ferdgsfygfgd I have a life bitch. Maybe you should learn an instrument instead of shooting off your shit smelling mouth. Russian are only good for sifting around in garbage and drinking vodka. The Russian government is organized criminals and mafia. They are garbage like you.

  • And USA's government isn't criminal? Did you enjoy 9/11? Thought so.

  • awesome

  • geddy lee use to play on a ric like 15 year ago

  • Geddy still uses a ric. For live at least. I'm not too sure about recordings but he most certainly uses a ric for some songs live.

  • ok cool i didnt know it ty , i was just quoting some people who use ric tho :p (awsome bass)

  • only bangcok man :]

  • Best bass player on Youtube! Great job man!

  • ok, so i play guitar, and have been wanting to play bass for some time, and i think this video convinced me to start. i know i couldnt do this stuff tomorrow, but it's motivation. I love the bass, very cool looking, resembles the iceman in a way. Thanks for the video, keep them coming

  • Sounds like the background music from "Seinfeld" lmfao

  • my dream is to play one of these... My local music guru said they're bad ass.. I've wanted to touch one every since cliff played one. nice slapping. never knew a rick had such a good slap action.

    nice man.. :].

  • my fav bass ..........man cliff use to play rickenbaker

  • a lot of great bassists used the ric other than cliff.

    It's lemmy's favorite (i think)

  • geddy lee man!!!!!!

  • Use a chorus effect ?

Your Rickenbacker love to be slaped :-P
