nice vid man! i got two ricks, a 4003 and a laredo. love them both-4004 has lots of bottom end but the 4003 is more unique. glad you are talking tech here, most rick owners only seem to talk about colour. not a slap guy (i love hearing OTHER people do it like marcus miller etc) but you do it well. i play blues and doom metal, usually with a pick. didn't pick ricks for the name, they have the tone and comfort factor i like. love your work.
If you're looking to buy an Indie IRK 4-String Electric Bass (RIKI STYLED) - Fireglow i have one for sale.... great condition!! Visit: davidjl.net / bass
@gamecubedude03 I'm not him but I'll help you out, and its been a month since you posted this comment so youve probably already got something else or this, but just in case, what kind of music do you play?
@PANICBLADE I haven't bought anything yet, luckily. Haha. I play alot of different things, mostly heavy alternative (almost punk/grunge), rock, and some metalcore. My favorite band is The Beatles, and I love McCartney's tone. But I'd never heard a first hand review from anyone about whether the bass is worth the fat price tag or not, apparently there are truss rod problems and stuff like that. I really want one though. Can you say dream bass?
@gamecubedude03 ok judging from your influences i guess you take from Lemmy and Cliff Burton too right? well the thing is their rickenbackers were/are super modded, like cliff had a gibson eb pickup in the neck of his and something like a weird strat pickup in the middle, stuff like that, new bridges and hardware for both, different frets, Lemmy got some crazy pickups too. so heres the thing, the 4001 was and is utter shit, the 4003 fixes a lot of those problems.
@gamecubedude03 4001 is basically a 4003 with a flawed truss rod system, string breaking bridge, weak ass frets and pickups constantly stuck on rickosound, which is ok but very frail, not for heavy stuff. rick got smart, and fixed the hardware and made more modern beefy pickups to match what people were using them for. with all of these enhancements, the bass has great tone and playability, but it is NOT worth the money. check out the rickenbacker vs precision bass video with the long haired guy
@gamecubedude03 also if you really like pauls tone then pick the songs you like from him and see what he actually used to record them, like helter skelter was recorded on a fender six string bass by john lennon, and a lot of his stuff was using a violin hofner bass and a fender precision. the jazz bass is also pretty cool. gibson has some amazing stuff like the thunder bird and the eb-1, which are aresome for a "Cream" like tone. but something you might really want to check out is G&L.
@gamecubedude03 Check out the l-2000 and the sb-2, i have an sb-2 and its perfect for me, its like what i HOPED a rickenbacker would be. the l-2000 has a lot of tonal options but is active so that might be a turn off. both sets of pickups are very powerful and can get some great rock/metal tones while still being versatile as hell. Frankly the ricky looks nice and has come a long way but it still doesnt stand up to others interms of reliability, playability and tone.
@gamecubedude03 and this thing does have truss rod issues, 2 trussrods are not a bad thing but they are a necessity, they dont have them because it works better. basically in my opinion ts a fantastic instrument but nowhere NEAR worth the money or wait time to recieve one. If the p bass and ricky were the same price, id go with the p bass still because its easier to work with technically, and while playing, plus it sounds all around better in my opinion, but everyone is entitled to their own.
@gamecubedude03 not to mention through neck basses, while sounding great are a huge risk. and i know people are gonna say things like ive had my 4001 rick for 900 years and nothing bad has happened, but they probably didnt travel to many different climate areas, or spend hours on planes or leave the instrument under hot lights, or they have amazing techs do that stuff for them. also when you replace your frets on a rick which is soon because the frets are small/weak, it will be suuper expensive.
@gamecubedude03 just remember there will always be someone who will say otherwise and thats fine, thats how you decide, theres stuff wrong with fenders and ernie balls and g&ls too, but you asked if I thought the ricky was worth it. I do not because it seems that its never good enough on its own for anybody, its design is inherently flawed, and its pretty uncomfortable to play for some. Amazing bass? YES. Worth $2,200? Not by a long shot. if you have a ricky or still want one more power to you.
Marlowe, i have the same ric... when i slap it though it makes an annoying popping sound like a string is hitting off the pickup. your not getting that popping sound at all. have you ever noticed that when slapping the ric ?? or maybe im playing it too hard
@167rockstar You gotta learn to thump. You will no longer get the sound. I had the same problem, and it is due to improper technique. If you look like Flea when you slap, you're gonna get that annoying popping sound.
Watch Larry Graham videos. They help a lot as well to understand proper thump and slap technique.
i have a 5 string esp ltd D-5 i love slappin on... not an ideal slap bass, but when you get the muscle memory down you can get some sweet sounds out of it
You don't have to pay over $2000 for one of these! I looked around on the internet, and found on Ebay a brand new Fireglo Rickenbacker 4003 for $1200 dollars, and it ended at around $1500. With warranty. Sadly, I didn't buy it, and I still kick myself for that. However, a few months later I looked around again, found a guy who said he'd beat any price, and found another which claimed a price of $1500 with $600 dollar tax. I didn't tell the other guy that, and got a jetglo for $1500.
my bassist has got a beautiful ric with the old horseshoe pickups, it sounds fantastic with some good rockin tunes, you should check it out, just put this 3jmQ9gHZ8aE after the v= in the url.
If I'm not mistaken, he's playing triplets play two notes via double thumping followed closely by a pop. In other words, thumb down, thumb up, pop. It's actually not very difficult when you get the hang of it.
dam thats really good, i play bass for a metal band i think im pretty good. but i still cant get the concept of slap, i really really want to play slap but every video i find is no help. but seriously you rock
Always wanted to play bass (a sqiuer electric was cheaper alas), this doesn't help too much :( (awesome playing btw), that and rickenbackers look badass.
Never saw a Ric gettin slapped, sounds good, and I'm a Fender Jazz Bass man . Yo, Syndome666, I understand. U gotta git another Ric, bro ! sick awesome! i have some trouble slappin my ric just cause the action need to be so low that the high end of the neck looses alot of it power do you find you have this problem??
Yeah I know what your sayin, Actually. I play Guitar, Some Bass and I was raised playing the drums since I was 6. So I got some flow. I dont own a bass though. I went on tour with a local band and the bassist taught me some riffs and junk. Nothing serious though. But I love the bass and once I get a decent paycheck im getting a nice setup! dude not like i didnt want a ric befor but just for that tone of slap i must have one now, what gear and settings did you use to get that tone other than the ric?
woow something completely different, got rickenbacker for years but never slap on it, not that i didnt try :)....... usually on some funkier bass like warwick......as far as i can tell ur the first that i saw slappin so good on ric......awesome!!!
probably not actually, as they both are doing very similar things musically... they would just get in the way of each other. how about Marlowe or Flea with Jimi Hendrix or John Coltrane?? that would be something
@SimuLord While flea is a fantastic bass player, he is not the best funk player, people like Victor Wooten and Marcus Miller would kick his ass any day.
while ago, i considered buying a ricky, my friends said it would be useless other than for rock, until i showed the versatility of it, prior to buying it, i showed them this clip..... yep, I SHOWED THEM ALRIGHT! lol. obviously they've never seen Rick James and MarloweDK funk it out..... never looked back. :)
hey guys i just found these awsome bass lessons i didnt know anything about bass guitar before and now i can play any scale anywhere, let me know if you interested and ill give you the link
ferdgsfygfgd I have a life bitch. Maybe you should learn an instrument instead of shooting off your shit smelling mouth. Russian are only good for sifting around in garbage and drinking vodka. The Russian government is organized criminals and mafia. They are garbage like you.
ok, so i play guitar, and have been wanting to play bass for some time, and i think this video convinced me to start. i know i couldnt do this stuff tomorrow, but it's motivation. I love the bass, very cool looking, resembles the iceman in a way. Thanks for the video, keep them coming
my dream is to play one of these... My local music guru said they're bad ass.. I've wanted to touch one every since cliff played one. nice slapping. never knew a rick had such a good slap action.
nice vid man! i got two ricks, a 4003 and a laredo. love them both-4004 has lots of bottom end but the 4003 is more unique. glad you are talking tech here, most rick owners only seem to talk about colour. not a slap guy (i love hearing OTHER people do it like marcus miller etc) but you do it well. i play blues and doom metal, usually with a pick. didn't pick ricks for the name, they have the tone and comfort factor i like. love your work.

Anytime I get lazy with my bass practice, I only have to watch one of MarloweDK's video's to inspire me again. Many thanks.

GO THE JETGLO'S!
I love my Ric, but I can't get the string height right. When I slap it either hits the pickup or it hits the top cover of the bridge pickup.

while ago, i considered buying a ricky, my friends said it would be useless other than for rock, until i showed the versatility of it, prior to buying it, i showed them this clip..... yep, I SHOWED THEM ALRIGHT! lol. obviously they've never seen Rick James and MarloweDK funk it out..... never looked back. :)

ferdgsfygfgd I have a life bitch. Maybe you should learn an instrument instead of shooting off your shit smelling mouth. Russian are only good for sifting around in garbage and drinking vodka. The Russian government is organized criminals and mafia. They are garbage like you.

And USA's government isn't criminal? Did you enjoy 9/11? Thought so.

Geddy still uses a ric. For live at least. I'm not too sure about recordings but he most certainly uses a ric for some songs live.
