Hi there, I followed your video and everything is great except for one thing. If I choose a resolution of say 800 x 600 (or anything else), the rendered file is always 720 x 480. Any tips on how to get it to render to the desired pixel resolution? Thanks
From what I can tell, it has to do the compressor. For example, if I choose "DV Video Encoder", then the final resolution will be 720x480, despite it saying during the render that it is rendering to my specifications (of say 800x600). If instead I choose "Uncompressed", it does render it correctly, but the file is massive and my video editing software (Vegas Pro) doesn't seem to be able to handle it. But yes, I was using the scanline and mentalray for these renders. Thanks again!
@NickB2513 Hi Nick, this is more animating than rendering. But if you click the time configeration to the right of the time slider it will tell you how many frames a second you are working with. Default is 30 IIRC. So one second is 30 frames on the slider. You can change how many frames are in the animation also. Then with AUTO KEY animation max will "tween" between the states you animate objects. Its not like photshop where you can have each frame staying for a certain amount of time Good luck
@Videoboy45 Yep if you dont compress it by using a codec. You can either use a codex (simple click and select in the popup box when you hit the render button, cinepack is probably a good choice) or take your massive file into windows movie maker or simiar program and export it through that.
@lewisforfar13 Unfortunately you cant do that when rendering to a AVI. What you can do however is "green screen" make your environment all green one colour, then you can edit in adobe after effects to remove the green and overlay another video or background. good luck
@damnyancey best bet is to edit in movie maker of aftereffects after rendering in colour. Although there may be a tickbox in advanced settings on the render window IIRC?
is it normal for a final render to take 165 hours ? , and the lenght of the video will be like 15 mins . can someone please help me , i don't know what to do , isn't there a solution to shorten the time ?
@TommyTheRealOne In industry you may have a bank of like 15 linked computers running overnight to render your work - unfortunately most people dont have 15 PCs .. What's increasin your time is probably shadows, light effects, hair and fur or particle systems. Reduce the quality of these or remove them and you'll see the render time shoot up. Either that ... or you need a better processor :P Good luck.
@Eddievedda1 Thank you very much for the reply , when i started the render (architectural one) the estimate time showed me 165 hours , after about 10 hours it shows me 1300 wtf :| , i have a Amd althon 64 5400 , 4 gb of ram and a ati radeon HD3450 with 512 mb , aditional to the unit's cooling i've added a really big cooler facing an open window , any way i've consultet with an specialist and he told me u need at least an intel i7 with 4 gb ram and 1gb videoboard if u whanna speed up the process
@Eddievedda1 thanks for the reply , i've consulted with a specialist in the meantime and found out that u need at least an intel i7 with 4gb ram and 1gb videocard to speed up the process , i have an amd althon 5400ghz with 4 gb ram and 512mb ati radeon + masive cooling and still not enough , after 10 hours of rendering max showed me 1340 hours remaining and i abandoned the project , obviusly the specialist offered to render it for me for like 300euros , and i don't have te money ...

@djorkid you select the right file size ratio at the top of the render options ok? What renderer are you using? Perhaps it is compressing it? Not 100% sure sorry, i dont really specalise in rendering. :(
@Raymond0412Tube same as below, the tickboxes should all be selected in the render options. You are getting a black bacground as opposed to an image you set? Top bar > Rendering > Environment (or something like that) and you can change the background?
@yamxa996 make sure you have correct viewport selected to render from in the render options, at the bottom. Such as perspective.
If thats not your problem, you make have accidently clicked a button which wont render objects. Scan over you render options again and make sure they are all in line. Good luck.
im using max 2010, and the first .avi file with 2010 (1080p) seems to be coded with a old codec.
max 08 09 i made avi and upload to utube, or convert the file. this .avi too 16 hours to render, im not redoing it, and when ever i upload it it goes crazy -black squares and freezing. same with converting, even to a new .avi. what should i do? and how whould i render in the future?
i usually render each frame as a single JPEG or TIFF cause if max crashes you can just start from the frame at which it failed. you can then just save it as an avi using the RAM player which is allot more safe. But i guess this way is cool for short animations. Good vids as always
i do everything in this video and when its done rendering the whole thing the avi is only 4 seconds of the whole clip wtf
shipsimulatorfreak 14 hours ago
@shipsimulatorfreak Do you only have 100 frames in your scene? You can change the length in the timeline config :)

@NicholasLeeson Very strange, you havent selected another weird renderer (at the end, keep it on default scanline, if not try MentalRay?)

Brilliant matey,
I'm new to 3ds max, this really helped me out.
I was animating using the perspective not camera. Is it better to use time instead of frame option?
I'm finding that my complete animations as avi are very fast, when I slow them down in a video editor it's really jerky.
I'm trying to create a scene using models.
Any tips are appreciated!
Cheers

@sprogsy10 Make sure you select active time segment tick box at the top of the render box paramiters.
Check your saved file destination for a AVI video. It wont display the video in max.
Any luck.

@Eddievedda1 I did all that. turns out it was something else. At the very bottom of the render settings, you have to change your production setting.
