My Grandpa when I was a young boy would tell me about the liberation of Flossenbürg concentration camp. He was a combat engineer in the 90th infantry division. He was in charge of building and blowing up bridges. He said him and the rest of the men knew about a mile from the camp that something horrible was going on. The smell of death in a camp is different than on the battlefield he said. Then he would tear up and could not talk about it after that. He would stare out a window after that.

My one grandfather was in one of the units that liberated Dachau, but I never met him. All he told my dad was that it was unbelieveable.

I'm currently reading a page about what happened to Dachau AFTER it was liberated. It was turned into a prison for former Nazi's. There is a picture entitled "War Crimes Enclosure No. 1 in the former Dachau concentration camp". Apparently, American soldiers used this as a POW camp and in some ways were worse than the Nazi's. Not enough room to post every thing here, many former KL's were used this way including Sachsenhausen

The film tries to recreate the stages of confusion and denial that the prisoners went through...It is a very touching story that must never be forgotten...such cruelty must never happen again!

My great uncle went into Dachau and said that the worst thing he ever saw was that when he went into one of the guard barracks he found a large pouch full of gold fillings and wedding rings that one of the guards had apparently been extracting from the prisoners. and mixed in among those fillings were myriad scraps of paper saying how many prisoners the guard had been killing each day.
I visited this camp in 1984 and the memory has always stayed with me. It was humbling and heartbreaking to stand on the grounds where so many suffered. It was almost as if I could hear their cries from the gas showers and the ovens. Now, as a high school teacher, I make sure to talk about the horror of prejudice.

What the Americans did to the surrendered SS guards was what should have happened to every surviving political soldier or guard of the SS that took part in the Nazi reign of tyranny.

I recommend everyone to visit a concentration camp. I have visited Dachau and seen the original ovens that were used. Also, the feeling of standing inside the intact gas chamber (allthough the one in Dachau was never used)... it still brings me to the brink of tears. I will never forget it!

My grandfather was a prisoner in the Dachau Concentration Camp and he is a survivor. The story about his liberation is a total mystery. The only story we know is that his father ( that was working in the liberation forces) came to Dachau and asked the supervisors to help him and free his son. The supervisors said no and told him to leave. On the way out... The rest of the story wasn't able to fit, too many characters, if you want the ending message me.

My Dad was a POW in WWII. He fought with the 45th Infantry Division and was captured at Anzio. Later his divison was one of the units that captured Dachau. I spoke to some of the veterans who liberated the camp. They said there were actually quite a few Germans interned in this camp too for opposing Hitler's regime. It seems that dictatorships devour everyone, including their own people, let alone other nations. I recognize the 45th "Thunderbird" patch of the Liberators. God Bless these guys.

@GG74K THat's not true. Especially in Dachau, the locals were there when the former arms factory was opened up as a concentration camp for, at first, political prisoner e.g. Communists. The locals were encouraged to throw stone/spit at/ hit the inmates. And they did so. BUT if they had not done that then they would of been taken to the camp themselves.ALSO some of the locals would kick/hit at the inmates and then throw a bit of bread or fruit at the inmate so they would have something to eat.

Dachau has a so called gas chamber which is a fake. It is a shower room made to look like a gas chamber. There is no Foresic evidence for any gassings anyway. There were only four rooms, an entrance to get undressed, a waiting room for the "showers", the GAS CHAMBER and then a place to burn bodies.

My mother's uncle Robert Hofmekler was in the US Army liberated Dachau and found there his own brother my Grandfather Michael Hofmekler, Robert was there as a translator , survivors who knew him from Lithuania as they was a musicians known family told him that his brother is there too, can you imagine the meeting? have a great picture of them together one as a American soldier and one survivor....

My Grandfather (UK RAF) helped the US liberate another camp. My Nanna told us all about it as my Grandfather was too upset to talk about it, he never really recovered form what he saw. My grandfather survived two years Dachau as well. But unfortunately he died while I was too young and know almost nothing about his experience there, although my parents tell me he disliked and didn't talk much about it.
If you want a first hand account of the liberation of Dachau read "The Hour of the Avenger" by Lt. A. Buechner (end credit). American troops did indeed exact revenge for what they found there.

There is a picture entitled "War Crimes Enclosure No. 1 in the former Dachau concentration camp". Apparently, American soldiers used this as a POW camp and in some ways were worse than the Nazi's. My great uncle went into Dachau and said that the worst thing he ever saw was that when he went into one of the guard barracks he found a large pouch full of gold fillings and wedding rings that one of the guards had apparently been extracting from the prisoners. and mixed in among those fillings were myriad scraps of paper saying how many prisoners the guard had been killing each day.
Still makes me shiver when i think about that...

I visited this camp in 1984 and the memory has always stayed with me. It was humbling and heartbreaking to stand on the grounds where so many suffered. It was almost as if I could hear their cries from the gas showers and the ovens. Now, as a high school teacher, I make sure to talk about the horror of prejudice.

All photographs of heaps of corpses were taken in Western camps, such as Dachau, Bergen-Belsen, and Buchenwald, where historians now agree no mass murders took place. Significantly, there are no such photographs taken at the 6 camps in which mass murder is alleged to have occurred (Auschwitz, Majdanek, Sobibor, Treblinka, Belzec, Chelmno), all in areas under Soviet control. It is very telling the Soviets released no pictures of mass graves or heaps of corpses.

I recommend everyone to visit a concentration camp. I have visited Dachau and seen the original ovens that were used. Also, the feeling of standing inside the intact gas chamber (allthough the one in Dachau was never used)... it still brings me to the brink of tears. I will never forget it!
And to think people still treat eachother in similar ways... I'm at a loss for words.

My grandfather was a prisoner in the Dachau Concentration Camp and he is a survivor. The story about his liberation is a total mystery. The only story we know is that his father ( that was working in the liberation forces) came to Dachau and asked the supervisors to help him and free his son. The supervisors said no and told him to leave. On the way out... The rest of the story wasn't able to fit, too many characters, if you want the ending message me.

My Dad was a POW in WWII. He fought with the 45th Infantry Division and was captured at Anzio. Later his divison was one of the units that captured Dachau. I spoke to some of the veterans who liberated the camp. They said there were actually quite a few Germans interned in this camp too for opposing Hitler's regime. It seems that dictatorships devour everyone, including their own people, let alone other nations. I recognize the 45th "Thunderbird" patch of the Liberators. God Bless these guys.

@GG74K THat's not true. Especially in Dachau, the locals were there when the former arms factory was opened up as a concentration camp for, at first, political prisoner e.g. Communists. The locals were encouraged to throw stone/spit at/ hit the inmates. And they did so. BUT if they had not done that then they would of been taken to the camp themselves.ALSO some of the locals would kick/hit at the inmates and then throw a bit of bread or fruit at the inmate so they would have something to eat.

Dachau has a so called gas chamber which is a fake. It is a shower room made to look like a gas chamber. There is no Foresic evidence for any gassings anyway. My mother's uncle Robert Hofmekler was in the US Army liberated Dachau and found there his own brother my Grandfather Michael Hofmekler, Robert was there as a translator , survivors who knew him from Lithuania as they was a musicians known family told him that his brother is there too, can you imagine the meeting? have a great picture of them together one as a American soldier and one survivor....

If somebody says holocaust didn't happen, you must be some stupid american kid or retard. Come here, to middle Europe, see some concentration camp. I've been to Osviencim. Till now you can still smell burnt meat. And the feeling of tens of thousands dead people. Even birds evade that place.

My gfther's younger brother was an SS early in the war, shot and killed during a partisan uprising, by a jew we are told. Someone wrote a letter to his family, saying that he was a good man. My gfather's older brother married a Jew, and they and daughter went to a camp, where at the end they were allowed to go to the US, but not him. Eventually joining them in Chicago; for too long the only work he could find was in meatpacking; that and war, apparantly broke his spirit. I hope he is ok now.

@eviltreemonster Not true. First they didn't call themselves Palestinians until the Jews returned to their land which they lived in for over 3000 years. The arabs only had it for 20-30 years. Secondly, the Palestinians didn't want the land. They wanted to leave, but no other arab nation would take them in. It was Syria & Jordan that set up the refugee camps. They only wanted to come back after the Israeli's transformed the land, irrigated the Negev, and built cities

And to all the Holocaust deniers. Let's say you are all correct in accusing the Jews of fabricating all of the pictures and movies of the Holocaust. But, if that is so, then GD DM they really must rule the world if they can fabricate such a great fabrication as they did. My grandfather survived two years Dachau as well. But unfortunately he died while I was too young and know almost nothing about his experience there, although my parents tell me he disliked and didn't talk much about it.

If you want a first hand account of the liberation of Dachau read "The Hour of the Avenger" by Lt. A. Buechner (end credit). American troops did indeed exact revenge for what they found there.
