The first generation lacked some power and armor, when Pearl Harbor was attacked the P-40B was introduced with better power plant and more armor plate as well as extra 50cals in the nose. The P-40 has stood the test of time that's why i love her.
@5000mahmud In the beginning that was the case but with the introduction of the P-40B and C Class with more armor at the nose and twin fifty cals on the nose they actually when nose to nose with the Mitsubishi Zeroes and the P-40 came out the winner in 99 percent of the cases. When i say nose i mean lets play chicken head to head.
The P-40 has always been my favorite fighter of WW2, she had a strong airframe able to absorb a great deal of punishment and bring it's pilot home. The only setback was it's Allison engine not having a two stage two speed supercharger like the Rolls Royce Merlin had in the Spitfire and P-51 Mustang to fight above 20,000ft.
The history I'm familiar with says the Flying Tigers (the American Volunteer Group) didn't fire a single shot at the Japanese until AFTER 7 Dec 1941. Is that incorrect? Possibly.
OMG, that's what gives it its character. That cowl is most likely what inspired somebody to paint the shark face on it. Without that cowl I think it would look like a Mustang.
@kristenburnout1 I guess it would look like a Spitfire than a P-51 Mustang without the cowl. But in any case I personally wouldn't want to see it any other way.
@IGO4MAKO1 Where would you put the shark's mouth? Best looking A/C with the Shark's mouth in the history of Aviation! Thanks to the Brits for giving us the Idea.
I was the CO of an internet squadron for a while, the 11th VAF, Aleutian Tigers. This was a P-40 squadron that flew in Alaska. the CO was Jack Chenault, who was Clair's son. Very cool, the P-40 is hands down my fav plane of WWII, followed closely by the F4U, which my father flew as a Marine in Korea.
Well, maybe. But it's only appreciation. All people have diferent opinions. For me all the planes are beautiful.
As aircraft lover and planes collector. I love the aeronautics! I think that the man who invented the 1st aircraft is one of the greatest genius in the history of mankind. Planes are magical and awesome!! I love all planes around the world, military too, but without bombs. No violence. Only the beauty of the design work, shapes and colors in sky. :)
It didn't become kick ass until they put a Merlin in it, it had an Allison I think, which sucked. It was heavy as heck, but then again, it had 4 or 6 .50 cals in it which made this plane pretty freaking nasty.
I read an article from a pilot that flew with the Flying Tigers and he stated that the P-40 could out turn a Zero in a diving turn as long as you kept up your speed. He also said that the P-40 had "vicious" stall tendancies so you had to be careful at low speeds. Even so,the P-40 was an under appreciated bird and deserves more respect.I will be building a 1/5 scale version in the months to come.Long live the P-40!!!
Interesting. Frank Tallman once said the P-40 was the most delightful flying fighter of all the WW11 gang. As fay as low speed handling all of them would kill you if you were careless, the P-47 in particular.
@groovy67 I just read your post. What RC are you building or should I ask what did you build (if it's already done). I'm building a Skyshark 1/5 scale myself. It's an ARF but there's quite a bit too it.
@IGO4MAKO1 I had a Yellow Aircraft P-40 but sold it. I now have the Top Flite P-40...should be done by this weekend! These planes scare some due to the narrow gear and bad press but they're fine unless there is a bad crosswind.
This was my fav as a kid till I saw the p51 then I had two favs then I saw the hurricane then three then spitfire and so on ,,, Now I know I have so many favs that it does not matter,, I'm waiting for another fav to come along. Thanks for the great montage very good.
At :26 these look like pre-war P-40's flying over Oahu, Hawaii. After 12-07-1941 the red circle in the national insignia was removed to prevent confusion with the Japanese "meatball". View towards Kaneohe and Kailua to the north.
I think that's from the movie Tora,Tora,Tora, where Lts Walch and Taylor get airborne to give the japanese a small taste of what they had been giving that morning, and if they were pre war P-40's they would have been P-40'C not E's
All right I get the satire. Say what you will, the P-40 looked like a fighter. And I don't think any Allied pilot would have traded it for an Oscar or a Zero.
For some great historical drama, Google "Flying Tigers" and read about the American Expeditionary Force that went to China to fly against the Japanese air force before America officially entered WW2.
@bootleggersouth Also of interest, when Chennault had to turn over the AVG to the Army, Colonel Robert Lee Scott was chosen to command them as the "23rd fighter group". Another Robert Lee... I'm reading his book "God Is My Co-pilot" and it is amazing. Being written by him during combat, and printed in 1943, it is about as authentic and genuine as it gets.
@bootleggersouth If it wasn't for the Tigers, China would have probably fallen to the Japanese before the Japanese even hit Pearl Harbor. There is a fantastic book (I want to say it was put together by his wife and I can't recall the title), but it's very interesting.
