I worked in Manhattan at Rickys and every Sunday night we closed at 9pm exactly and without fail, 3 Sundays in a row Foxy Brown would show up at just as were locking the doors and come in and take at least a half hour looking at makeup.....I hated her. But according to management, we were allowed to make an announcement 5 mins to closing but not allowed to tell ppl to GTFO...grrr.
It depends on what I'm buying and how badly I need it and whether or not the trip to the store was planned, but I generally try not to overstay my welcome.
I experienced this at work yesterday! It was 5 mins before closing at which I made an announcement that we were closing; this lady and her kids are walking around nonchalantly like snails KNOWING that we were all tired and wanted to go home. People just have no consideration for others.
My stupid husband loves to go to stores and restaurants and hour before they close. I have no idea why, it always seems like he wants to go out to eat or go shopping at exactly 8:00 pm or 10:00pm (when the place closes at 9:00 or 11:00). I sometimes want to divorce him because this upsets me, I hate cashing out at 8:59 or having to eat faster because the food finally came in at 10:30.
I work at a certain chain craft store in New Jersey (not AC Whore, the other one), and while we make announcements 20, 15, 10, and 5 minutes to closing, in addition to 2-3 once we're actually closed, it never fails that people are just walking around browsing at 10 after. SERIOUSLY? Thank you for understanding the bane of existence for a retail slave ;)
I am currently failing my Art Gcse, yep Im from the UK, dont ask how I found you okay??? And when my teachers asks me why I have 3 pages total in my exam book I told her, I spend my time watching JPMETZ. Yeahh, she gave me a detention....
i used to work at a very upscale tiffany's-type store in new orleans that closed at 9pm. most, if not all of our clientele were fully aware of our hours, yet knew that we had a soft-close policy. it never effing failed. when i worked nights and had somewhere to be (say, a 10pm date or whatever), some bitch would breeze in at 8:55 casually browsing and asking a ton of idiotic questions with no intention of buying a damn thing. so completely inconsiderate.
I used to be an assistant manager at The Body Shop in Manhattan.... the only thing worse than last minute people shopping there... was working as a waiter. We closed at midnight, would have no one come in from 10:30 until 11:55 and then we would ALWAYS get the stupid idiot trying to impress a girl, coming in and ordering well done filet mignon, and chocolate souffle at precisely 5 minutes before closing. IDIOTS THE HELL!!!!!
I always look at the door to make sure I'm not there last minute, and I would try to be out of there at least 5 minutes before they closed, if not earlier. It's just rude, but people don't care. I work in fast food, close the store at night by myself, and people sometimes stay and eat inside after we've closed and I've told them we're closing. It's rude, people have lives outside of work and they've most likely been there all day and like you said they just want to go home!
No. When a store is closed, it's closed. To stick around is the essence of asshatery.
But what I love is when there is a "hard closing" and I get announcements about the time every 3.5 mins. This one coffee house I frequent gives ridiculously timed announcements. Like "excuse me everyone, but Peet's Coffee will be closing in 73 minutes."
Yes Justine I do have homework to do. But I like doing meaningful things. So YES I watch you sit there and talk. And laugh. And then end up ranting like you when I'm pissed. WHAT A ROLE MODEL. :)
Having worked retail a time or two myself, I am never, EVER in a store close to closing. If it closes at 6, I'm outta there by 5. I hated people who came into the store at 5 minutes until closing and decided to take their sweet-ass time dilly dallying around while I tried to not fume and wish them death. They also almost never ended up buying anything. Assholes. So to answer your question, I think soft closing is a shitty thing for your employees and not worth it over all.
Australians have to be told what to do and then they resent being told what to do.
Other day the fire alarm goes off and nobody leaves everyone just goes about doing there thing. No one will leave unless a voice comes over the PA and tells people to leave , then they will leave but yes resenting being told to leave.
Ughhh, there is nothing worse than getting ready to close in a few mins than having a customer come in and look around. Where I work, we can't close nor tell the customer we're closing untill they're gone. I had some women come in one time and ask what time we close, I said 5. So she said she'll be back later. She decides to come 10 to 5 and starts trying on clothes and stuff. -.- Anyways long story short I didn't leave till 20 after 5. Andddd I didn't get paid for those extra 20 mins either...
Every Sunday during the time change we get someone in the store at 6 p.m. when we're closing who thinks it's five and is merrily shopping and destroying things.
It's because you've worked customer service. I totally get that. I've worked customer service for years now and I always think about what's most convenient for the person working, because I don't want to make their jobs any harder. Because it's a shit job, usually.
that happens to me all the time at work--people come in 5 mins til closing and although i tell them this, they just waltz around in the darkness of the closed store and keep the employees until after the time : | meh, oh well XD
I do have homework to do, actually. But you are far more entertaining. :D
Ikea scares me. >_> I've worked in retail before. I freakin hate it when people know the store is closed, and yet still feel the need to meander about like it's no big deal. Ugh.
My uncle owns a store and it has a displayed closed time, and he will turn off the sign and start ringing off the till, and people will still come in and want to buy things. He has even gone early to do paper work and people will show up at 7:30am to buy something when the store does not open until 9:30am!!! It annoys me so much when I am working there! I WANNA GO HOME!
No it makes sense because only the managers want to forego explicit closing times for extra purchases, I'm sure the staff on the floor wishes they had a hardset time because being stuck at a store late at night waiting to close is the worst.
If I knew the store was closing at 9..I'd try to be at the check out by 8:45. I think it's rude to try and hang around after that, especially if you're probably not going to buy anything.
My mom and I went into a black eyed peas. When we walked in we asked them what time they closed and they said in 5 minutes. Even though the guy said not to worry about it, I wasn't going to stay there because its just common sense. The waiter who would have had us would hate us if we sat down 5 minutes before closing.
I cried when you called us stupid trolls. Then I got over it and I'm being an asshat and waiting for numero 18. By the way person who got thumbs up for being 20 and watching this, I am 23. I didn't realize so many people think JPMETZ is for kids. I for one, feel more sophisticated every time I am done watching one of her masterpieces. Thank you Justine for helping me grow as a person.
I began to laugh at the beginning of this video. Then I realised you were insulting me. Then I started to cry, because I knew that for one second in time, I was a thought in your mind.
I won't even go into a store if I see there's less than 30 minutes until closing because I don't want the employees all passive aggressively ringing up my items.
I would leave the store and come back another day. I work for a large home reno store as a cashier and it drives me nuts when people just chill even after we make closing announcements. I'm off at 10PM people, they don't pay me overtime for the extra 30 minutes you stay in the friggen store! SO......GTFO!
you and Nicky spend so much time together. i know that's justifiable if you're friends, but can you just address it and put our minds at ease? ARE YOU OR AREN'T YOU CASUALLY HAVING SEX WITH SOUNDLYAWAKE?!
UGH I HATE THOSE PPL! that ALWAYS happened to me i would end up leaving at 2:30-3:00am b/c of ppl who took their sweet time and this would happen during the holidays so we were open until 12 and the last people [who would not buy shit] would leave around 12:30-1am and we had to rush and try to get everything done and still got out really late =/
I would absolutely not keep walking around a store when it was closing. I used to work at Pier 1 Imports and we had the "soft closing" method as well. There would be times I would have to not even check out customers, but simply help them look for items after closing and then they never buy anything and leave. It's shitty, and I destroy people that do that.
I would never go into a store that's closing ten minutes before, unless I knew exactly what I was going to get or if I desperately needed it. I worked at a shop where people would come in right when we were literally locking the doors, and be pissed if we didn't let them in. It is very frustrating and I wouldn't like to put any other cashier through that.
@jessface777 The girl i replied to said she went to wal mart and left 2 minutes before closing, to which i said wal mart is open 24 hours. I know Justine was at Ikea, i heard the video.
Fuck no I would not stay in a store after close! I've worked retail, and I've been the bitch ringing people up half an hour after the store is supposed to be closed. It's no fun. So now, I am very conscious of when places close.
Nope. If it was closing or almost closed I will call it a miss and come back tomorrow.. I used to work in retail sooooooooo those bitches banging on the locked door like "closed?? why?" drove me crazy. I think I still have nightmare about those douchebags
I would also get the fuck out. At the small store I work at, if people stay AFTER closing time, I get angry. I don't wanna put workers in that position so I just peace it. There'll be other days.
i do the same exact thing justine! When its kinda late i look for when the store closes. I know Target will tell you over the loudspeaker that they are basically closing and to get ur stuff and bring it to the front. I dont get mad cuz i would want to go home 2
No way would I be just looking around that late; if I needed something, I would go in, get it, and leave. And you know those people knew the store would be closing soon, unless your at a 24 hour walmart, you should know places usually close around 9. Same with restaurants. If it's too close to kitchen closing time, I won't go in.
I wish more stores were 24 hours. I always seem to shop late. And sadly, when I get my 11pm shopping urge Wal-Mart is all that's open. But, on topic, if I am at a store at closing time, I will keep browsing until I am told to get out. Not intentionally mind you... So, I guess the soft close does work.
I work in retail now and my managers always announce over the intercom when we're closing. We close at 10, by God we're out of there by 10:05. I love it.
I NEVER stay in places of business after they close. I don't even go to restaurants in the last hour they are open. I used to work an an Outback Steakhouse (bonzer, mate), and I seriously had tables hanging out in the restaurant up to two hours after we closed. And of course, we can't leave until all our tables leave, because we have to cash in our tips and clean our sections. And the dumbass rednecks who camped out in my section always tipped less than 10%. ALWAYS.
HELL NO!!!! its rude as hell and it infuriates the shit out of me. when customers do that to me it makes me want to choke them. some people have NO manners.
I fucking love IKEA. I don't think you understand. JUSTINE, WHY ARE YOU MY SOULMATE. WE NEED TO RUN OFF TOGETHER. AND ELOPE. WITH POANG CHAIRS. AND SWEDISH MEATBALLS.
I work in retail and its the most annoying thing when customers hang around after closing. Especially as we don't get payed after the closing time! So we do closing calls where we put emphasis on certain words so the customers get it "The time is FIVE THIRTY and this store is NOW CLOSED!, thank you for shopping with us today!" See were still polite about it though :)
I always seem to get to Taco Bell right as they're about to close, like 10 minutes mind you, but still. I'm like scared they're gonna spit in my food, cause they're so damn rude! But in my experience most stores have a 15 minutes to closing announcement. Most places the registers lock up automatically, or so they say..
I like Justine even though she talks about something completely unrelated to my real life problems sometimes for some reason I see her as inspiration idk...
I wouldn't stay in the store if i knew it was closing. where i used to work we would put the shutter half way down so people would know we were about to close and not come in but you'd still get these jackasses practically crawling under the shutter just have a look around!
@ThoughtsOnStyle I kindly ask you to leave..like "excuse me, we're closing" customers answere: "I don't give a fuck!" True story. happened on saturday :)
i worked at a store where we couldn't ask people to leave or announce it was closing we were alowed to shut one door and not let people IN the store though. It always made it SUPER akward
I used to work in a sandwich bar and you would have to start cleaning up and packing away food an hour before closing but there would always be someone who came in just as you were about to turn the grills off and order a load of stuff which resulted in getting all the food back out. I never go in a store near closing time because I feel bad for workers who have to stay late because some idiot doesn't care/hasn't realised that the store is closing.
i work at a store that does that. we're not allowed to tell the customers that we're closing. so like 10 minutes after the music shuts off, people are still wandering around until someone notices that i'm guarding the doors to make sure even more people don't come in and they go "oh are you about to close??" and i'm just like "no, we closed 10 minutes ago."
@Loves2Sing86 Soft closing sounds stupid to me..I guess if you plan on working past when you're supposed to close you would get used to it though? It's just like..what's the point of having a closing time if you don't stick to it..weird.
@jessface777 it's only done to make more money. the concept is: if customers are in the store longer-even after we're closed- we'll make more money. it's ridiculous and a waste of the employee's time. but what can we do? businesses are greedy.
But i love stores that stay open later even when they're suppose to close, i can shop longer. Although they really shouldnt do that as i wouldn't get out until they kicked me out. o.O Most people seem to be the same.
I work at BBY and they do soft closes at my store. We can't tell people to leave/we are closing so people buy more. More often than not though, people just cone to chill and/or get info then go to walmart.
I think everything should be 24/7 fuck religious people that say they need to rest on sunday.... seriously i cant stand stores that are closed all day sunday, like wtf... get with the time people, that is so old school! Thats my rant! lol
Cont: mostly cause I worked deli, and cleanup started an hour prior, and if a customer walked up 10 minutes after closing, we'd be forced to open everything back up!!! Hated it.
I just left my retail job last summer (Safeway/Vons), and we had set closing times, and they licked the doors from the outside, but any customers left in the store, were not rushed, and we still had to help them even if we were into overtime. I hated it, mostly cause
I work in retail and we always close at 6. Every fucking store in the mall closes at 6, latest and people still come in at 5:59 even though they can see me mopping. So I have to redo it. If my manager isn't there I just close the shutters and make them panic. And then they're all like 'you're closing?!' I never go into a store just before closing time cause I know how annoying it is.
I've worked at a gas station, so anywhere I'm always nice to the workers. Just being polite, and maybe a smile can make work bearable. Especially if they were just called a retard a minute ago.
What the heck? Our IKEA is by the airport too, and it's also way too hard to get to it. Do they think it's a good marketing strategy to put them in such inconvenient places? o_O
Because I also worked in retail stores, I was very conscious about about closing times. I feel bad even entering a store 30 minutes before closing. When I was a cashier at walgreens, these 2 older women would ALWAYS walk in 10 minutes before closing with a cart..then they'd wander around the isles for 20 minutes, only to come up front with ice cream and take the cart out to the parking lot so I'd have to go get it >.>
Whether it be a store or restaurant, I never like holding up an employee so I leave before closing time and I won't go into a place to eat if it's shortly before they are supposed to close. After working crappy jobs, it has made me aware of how they must feel...because Hell, I wouldn't want to be held up waiting on some idiot who can't tell time. They want to be hanging out and out of their workplace just like anyone else.
I work in retail, and of course I work the closing shift. And you don't know how much it pisses me off when people see the signs on the door saying we close at 6pm and it's 5 til closing and they come into the store & act like we have to stay open all night for them because all they want to do is browse. What really pisses me off is when there in the store past closing & dont even end up buying anything. It's like "please let me know if you're going to purchase anything cuz I'd really like to s
i work at walmart, and that shit happens all the time. our store isn't 24 hours. and in the last hour of us being open, we make pages every 15 minutes, and then in the last 15 minutes, we make them every 5, and yet, somehow, we still have people who take their sweet ass time, because they know we can't kick them out ...
Unfortunately I'm a cashier at a place where you can "Expect great things" and our policy is "Yes we can." So I have to endure retarded people who are shopping for things that they can buy down the street at Walmart, even when we're closing and Walmart is open. Not only that but apparently people think that the right way to shop is to bring everything they considered buying to the register, then they go through it in front of me, throw it at me and say, "I don't want this."
I work at a retail store and we do announcements like "Our store will be closing in 10 minutes... gtfo" but people do still wander around picking junk up and taking their sweet time getting to the front to pay. But they made it so that the last few cashiers on at night are actually scheduled to work 30 minutes beyond closing time so they don't feel the need to rush and get pissed off because people won't let them leave.
People these days don't really understand the meaning of "common courtesy". I guess some of those people didn't understand that those cashiers and whatnot are real people with real lives who have been on their feet all day, and want to get home and unwind. Unless you're already in line, gtfo so they can close up.
Ahhh Justine, you are so considerate and patient. You're like Buddha, with boobs. Joobs if you will... Justine boobs... get it? No? *sigh* I will never be as funny as you :(
I've been a cashier many times, and it's really irritating when people don't try to get their stuff together when it's like 10 minutes til closing. I doubt those people, if they do know that the store's about to close, have ever dealt with the difficulties of retail, nor are they aware of what it's like to work odd hours of the night while you long for your bed. Also, as a customer, I'd prefer to be forewarned that the store is about to close.
I worked in Manhattan at Rickys and every Sunday night we closed at 9pm exactly and without fail, 3 Sundays in a row Foxy Brown would show up at just as were locking the doors and come in and take at least a half hour looking at makeup.....I hated her. I won't even go into a store if I see there's less than 30 minutes until closing because I don't want the employees all passive aggressively ringing up my items.

I'd feel too awkward by myself in a store and probably just leave anyway regardless of the time.

I would leave the store and come back another day. I work for a large home reno store as a cashier and it drives me nuts when people just chill even after we make closing announcements. I'm off at 10PM people, they don't pay me overtime for the extra 30 minutes you stay in the friggen store! SO......GTFO!

MrThatOneGuy97 10 months ago

ALWAYS.

I work in retail and its the most annoying thing when customers hang around after closing. Especially as we don't get payed after the closing time! So we do closing calls where we put emphasis on certain words so the customers get it "The time is FIVE THIRTY and this store is NOW CLOSED!, thank you for shopping with us today!" See were still polite about it though :)
crazyhaysy 10 months ago
If it's a soft closing, let them suffer if push comes to shove. They knew what they were getting themselves into...

Loves2Sing86 10 months ago
@Loves2Sing86 Soft closing sounds stupid to me..I guess if you plan on working past when you're supposed to close you would get used to it though? It's just like..what's the point of having a closing time if you don't stick to it..weird.
jessface777 10 months ago
@jessface777 it's only done to make more money. the concept is: if customers are in the store longer-even after we're closed- we'll make more money. it's ridiculous and a waste of the employee's time. but what can we do? businesses are greedy.
Loves2Sing86 10 months ago
But i love stores that stay open later even when they're suppose to close, i can shop longer. Although they really shouldnt do that as i wouldn't get out until they kicked me out. o.O Most people seem to be the same.

Whether it be a store or restaurant, I never like holding up an employee so I leave before closing time and I won't go into a place to eat if it's shortly before they are supposed to close. forrestlarsen 10 months ago
Unfortunately I'm a cashier at a place where you can "Expect great things" and our policy is "Yes we can." So I have to endure retarded people who are shopping for things that they can buy down the street at Walmart, even when we're closing and Walmart is open. Not only that but apparently people think that the right way to shop is to bring everything they considered buying to the register, then they go through it in front of me, throw it at me and say, "I don't want this."
msfistfightsvsfences 10 months ago
