  • Cracking stuff. Holds up on it's own.

  • Great stuff!!!

  • Nice flange sound-- what kind is it?

  • nice work.

  • You nailed it. Brilliant.

  • Both tracks on youtube.

  • Have a listen to "glow world" (Bill Nelson) and "heads we're dancing" (Kate Bush) for some more awesome fretless work by mick.

  • yeah got all of kates stuff...was gonna post a few on..when i suss how (new phone)...love bass on mother stands for comfort...........micks line on HWD is top draw

  • Good job as usual man. The more people get into what mick Karn was and is doing, the better!

Your vids make it clear that it CAN be done.

  • When I started out playing bass in 1980 Mick was a big influence. I tried not to make it too obvious in our recorded stuff, but good effort my friend you have a lovely tone on that Jazz.

  • u need mick to help but not that bad really just souds heavy on the ears mate i love mick karn and his stuff ..........tone down and get some control

  • the clues in the 20 watt amp,and no wal,and recorded on a phone...

  • very good.this is your best one on youtube.mick karn IS THE FUCKING MAN!!!

  • Gosh I had no idea so much of the ambience came from the bass. You only really hear the attack sounds clearly.

  • When you're doing these videos you should buy a drum machine and try to get the beat to go along with your bass playing.

By the way I hate you for being able to play this. I could play Art Of Parties, Life In Tokyo and some other Japan songs but could never get anywhere near as you have on this. keep them coming. I look forward to hearing more.

  • hi,i do have a d machine on my zoom box and timing has been mentioned on my stuff,it was never meant to be "hey look at this"more a case of putting some mick stuff out there..stuck for more at mo..lost phone and cant suss my new phone for downloads..

  • @mintwithahole - Perhaps you can post some videos of you playing like Jansen and Life in Tokyo, etc, on the bass? Be interesting to hear.

  • Mick Karn is one of the reasons I play bass. Tin Drum is an education in fretless playing...this is surprisingly easy to play

  • i agree on both counts, sussing out the technique to micks lines is the hardest part as very little is on film, and he makes it look so easy!

  • one of the best bass lines ever. I can not belive it has not been sampled, you could do so much with it, maybe Mick Karn has a patent on it!

  • i just think he (and japan) are so overlooked theres zillions of vids on the wootens, clarkes, fleas of this world and a pocketful of micks...i think thats a lot to do with mick and his understated brillance..

  • could you tell which bass guitar and amplifier do you use?

    thanks

  • on this song its a 1989 fender japan fretless jazz,an eden n8 nemesis practice amp and a zoom b2 box with the flanger setting..any good flanger/chorus pedal will get somewhere near(without the wal)

  • brilliant...Mick Karn!!!so powerful man!

    great job!

  • Splendid version.. Well studied!!

  • Excellent, glad Mr Khan's influence is still present to this day, just the robotics to work on! Cheers

  • Had to come back for another listen. This lads got talent. Find someone who can play the drums like Steve Jansen and you'll make a fortune.

  • Splendid work! You have the tabs?

  • sorry no,learnt by ear plus judging by some its nowhere near right!?!

  • Very good. One of my favourite of Japan! Thank's a lot!

  • Oh, by the way. Don't try to do that strange walk he Karn used to do when playing live! That way lays disaster. Peace.

  • Brilliant! Absolutely spot on. Well done.

  • YEs even better than the original :-), but it sounds u use a phaser? gives some more space to the sound,,very nice work!

  • thanks ,effect off a zoom 2b,good box but drum machine stopped working after about 7 goes!

  • hey dude, nice cover!! Did you play this from the ear?

  • thanks, yes all my stuff is from ear, dont read music which i think if id bothered i might be a better player,i think you need that ability to pick the notes out and good timing obviously.....Tom

  • Wow! Excellent job!!

I watched all of your videos and they all impressed me. I hope you will upload more.

  • It was really good! I love the bass and the keyboards on this track. It is a very atmospheric song. Well done! Keep it up!

  • thanks, dont know think its too bad myself, bit stumped by irish royals comments but hey! :)

  • Damn near perfect!! I am certain on bad days Mick didn't get that close.

  • Excellent stuff, really appreciate the effort you're putting in to all of these!

  • cheers my mate....:)

  • an hour seems a long time its quite easy...nice to have self confidence..20years since i played it too, just having some fun, wondering how long it would be for the "thats shit,im much better" brigade to catch me up!

  • Forgive me! NOT part of THAT brigade, perusing for things I can belittle. To show my son some good music of Japan & Mick Karn (he HAS good taste) came here and typed 'Sons of Pioneers'. Yours was first up, looked like 'how to' video: I felt Karn was insulted and posted snide comment.

If it's all just for your own fun, fine, but the wrong notes, poor harmonics and... (OK, double string slides usually are out of tune unless you're Karn, Pastorius or Palladino). I was just annoyed at your nerve!

  • I could play that better myself after about an hour, when I'd just bought my first fretless, 20 years ago!

  • Post us a vid then, I'd love to know how to play this right. =]

  • i think my versions about there ,the sound is nowhere near the wal.mick makes it flow much better.come on irishroyal get ya bass out!

  • These comments are all askew!

I'd disagree over the 'about there'. Your sound lacks both wowwy richness on the low notes AND tangy crispness on the harmonics. For 'flow', I think you mean 'timing'!

Maybe I could get better sound from my zoom506, simple but brilliant for its price. My Goodfellow bass and Trace Elliot amp would certainly help!

  • sorry, but i think you,re taking it all a bit seriously,my two fav bass players are jj burnel and mick karn, who both seemed to have been overlooked by the zillions of bedroom player posts on youtube,so i decided to revisit stuff from the past and have had 100% postive response.all of these are recorded on a mobile phone, you might find your sons video camera wont upload if its too high quality.all your gripes are with the sound which i apoligize for in the post.

  • Had I a video camera, I might be tempted. Could say I've better things to do with my time, but my bass has lain in the case for about 4 years now - no band. Making youtube vids might be incentive to blow off the dust! Maybe teach some people how to really play the fretless ¦¬P

My son has access to a camera from his media course - his mates used it to make a video with me for a project, it was good quality.

  • All talk =] Please show us. =]

  • try your phone see how you sound ,like human jarv says all talk:)...the fretless is a little treat i play occasionly,i gig regular hence practice amp at home.
