You can't merge the paths in Live Paint. If this is what you want to do then work with Live Trace. After you do the Live Trace hit Expand. This will give you the ability to Direct Select anchor points and paths and combine and change the colors. Live Paint doesn't give you that option.
What if the paths within the pear need to be combined? I.e., if you have several little blobs of one shade that really should be combined into one path? How do you combine and merge separate paths?
