Are you going to hate Kaufmann if he loved this production, as he revealed in one of his interviews? He's from Germany so he probably feels at home with this kind of staging.
The things singers have to put up with. Listen to him lose his note for having to contort and move : precisely at 00:48 sec, then the cabaletta is super slow and to end it all the guy has to sing his high C while back to the public... wow. I respect Kaufmann for his patience and understanding.
OMG! What an awful production. It makes you want to sing in concerts only! Also the tempo of the cabaletta is much too slow ... mind you ... just for my taste. And still. What Jonas is making of the situation... absolutely a miracle. I do hope his voice is not going to do what Villazon's did.
It is quite hard to sing if you you are lying on your back, most directors are just clueless. But Kaufmann nevertheless sounds pressed if he stands on his feet. I am not quite sure if he had get the high C by standing still, but who knows.
I just wonder how long the stupid directors will rule in the big European opera houses bringing the opera to the level of the provincial German cabaret?!!
Goodness me how i dislike the timbre of this voice. The vowels are all wrong - especially the "i" sound. The "e" could not be less italian below and above the stave. The "a" has a random blackness to it. Sorry, I know some love him, but not my cup of tea.
Absolute GARBAGE of a production, DUMB STUPID IDIOTIC REDICULOUS ASSININE PATHETIC productions like this should be outlawed! Does he even know what he is saying???
This is absolute GARBAGE. Does he know what he hell he is singing about?? Productions like this should be outlawed! Idiotic! assinine! pathetic! rediculous! dumb! stupid!
@turbofreddy Totally agreed, but Kaufmann is something else.. What a gorgeous voice, with or without a clean high c at the end.. the rest was so beautifully sung.. masculine big, voice.. give me goosebumps.
I guess my typing fingers had even more of a problem with this production than i did. Of course, I meant to spell it Kaufmann - and neither I, nor my fingers, have any problem with his performance. In fact, they (my fingers) have wicked thoughts of running through his hair...
I'm all for a fresh take on an old standard, but there's too much unrelated business going on that detracts from the musical intention. Pal Vinnie in his wifebeater, tinkering in the background, while Alfredo sings 'O mio rimorso' is beyond silly. Kinda liked Annina's trench coat, though ... Wonder what kKufamann really thought of the stage direction?
by the way, i think he was goofing around too much at the end of this aria... that's why the C seemed like an afterthought. just listen to the "O mio rimorso" available on YouTube from Paris 2007, that high C is just ridiculous! :-)
totally agree, he almost cracked that easy g at 0:48 just because of the effort of coming out from there, i can´t believe a star as kauffmann agreed to do that
Does anyone know if this Traviata production can be obtained in totality somewhere on DVD perhaps? Unfortunately, I missed its showing on France2 in December. I find Kaufmann's performance in all respect perfect.
I like the production though I think it is quite a difference to see it as video with this excellent picture direction than to see it on stage where details get lost. A friend from Paris who saw it live agreed to this. Im German and there are many more really disgusting or boring productions over here. This is only another way to tell the story and there is nothing disgusting with it.
Sure, some things may be overdrawn to show the decadence of the society, but everything fits well together and is quite moving. Im almost 100 % sure that Jonas loved the production as well. He not only likes to sing, but loves to act as well and a conventional set gives him a lot less possibilities to show it.
(BTW there are some guys on Parterre who really need a hearing aid or are they mad because he prefers to sing in Europe?)

Just type "kraus rimorso" in the search bar. It's better by MILES.

Well, I take my hat off to Kaufmann for following the direction. Very professional.

Maravillosa la voz, horrible la puesta en escena, casi parece una parodia.-

one of the most awful euro trash productions! is Annina a female Gestapo officer?
gestas60323 1 year ago
Some nights he is just remarkable ... this is one of those nights. The stage director should have let him stand still for that C.

@mrjoe1955 Im sure he does know what he is saying. As an opera singer myself, you dont always have a lot of say in what the director wants.

Great voice, as always. Tough high c but that's live for you... This production sucks. How to ruin a composer in 6:22minutes...

Paris is not a 3rd rate house, dunrob3. Come to Hamburg and see what we have here. Butterfly from 1963! What a bore!!

What a ridiculous production: typical of a 3rd rate opera house that wants to be talked about! Thank God the voices are good.

I think this guy puts villazon into shame, for voice and looks

Not 100% convinced by his final note, but the rest of his performance was practically flawless.

Kaufmann est très bon ,pour la mise en scène
c'est ridicule et ça manque d'imagination et comme décors c'est horrible.

A défaut de talent, les metteurs en scène ont une imagination délirante, proche de la démence
