If God exists and has a voice, it is undoubtedly the voice of Kurt Moll!
This is indeed gorgeous like everything the man has recorded and constitute a referential difficult to stand up to. What makes him special to my ears: the musical line of his singing, close to a cello, never singing note by note, word by word but phrases! and also a great vocal technique without this gross wobbling we hear everywhere nowadays!
@pantanegro you're correct of course. i was reading along with my edition in e minor, and i'm not one of those perfect-pitch-having sort of people. btw totally agree with you; incredible regardless of key.
Fontana, this is WONDEFUL! Do you know if/how I can get a hold of it? Other good recordings of this cycle, but for me, none hold a candle to this one.
I have been a huge fan of Kurt Moll's singing for a few years now. I am a bass and at my school, I feel like people simply throw names of singers around without really thinking about their actual voices. As far as I'm concerned, Kurt Moll is the best bass of which there is recorded evidence. End of story.
Thank you for posting this song. If you can, please post the other three songs from the cycle. Some of the best singing I ever heard on stage at the Met was Moll's.
Does anyone out there have Helen Traubel's rendition of these pieces from the early 40's, once available on a Columbia 10-inch LP? She is authoritatively accompanied, I think, by Coenraad van Bos, who was one of the first pianists to play these songs. My memory of Traubel's performance is that it was magisterial.
His cd on Orfeo with Garben, where he sings Lieder by Schubert is also a gem. I listen to it over and over again. A very intelligent performer with an immensly flexible voice.
I want to record this with my Cello...as breathtakingly as sung here at 3:09

@aclouti6 This is actually a step down, in d minor, but it's still stunning. This baritone is jealous!
