I'm Indonesian and i'm really interesting to learn maori language :)
but,too bad some people in pacific do not want to receive that some Indonesian language (Bahasa) related to Maori language.dunno why ? i just think that they are a group or racist people..
I'm interesting learn maori because i'm very interesting with their unique culture..
@Kamachar666 - yes it sounds a little like ts - I think it is possibly a kind of "soft:" t.
There is no s sound as Europeans know it in Te Reo Maori - also it could be a dialect form of t. - eg wh is pronounced differently by different Iwi (tribes).
@SteelArr0w ...And some are really similar to Cebuano 1 to 10 = usa, duha, tulo upat, lima, unom, pito, walo, siyam, napulo. Pronunciation is very similar, especially if you substitute l for r. Eg lima becomes rima and walo becomes waru etc in Maori
Romaniaaan! :D :D I know Hungarian too 1 - egy 2 - ketö 3 - harom 4 - negy 5 - öt 6 - hat 7 - het 8 - nyolc 9 - kilenc 10 - tiz and Japanese: ichi, ni, san, shi, go, roku, nana, hachi, kyuu, juu
You know, there are different ways to write the syllables in romaji. If you want, you can also write si instead of shi and la instead of ra. And you net the two u's to make clear that it is a long vowel. Normally, you add a line above the vowel, but I don't have them on my keyboard. Like this: ā (copied from wikipedia). In hiragana the syllables for Juu are: ji-yu-u, so you need two u's.
"Tahi means shit" hahaa !it means the same thing in malagasy but it is spelled in a different way : " tay'" 1 = ray , isa 2 = roa 3 = telo 4 = efatra 5 = dimy 6 = enina 7 = fito 8 = valo 9 = sivy 10 = folo
Its pretty cool that the Maori numbers are somewhat like those in the Philippines (usa duha tulo upat lima unom pito walo siyam napulo), makes them easy to remember :) How would you count above 10??
oh, 10000 is easy... thats 10 and 1000, so... tekau mano... so using that i can count to 999999 in maori... perhaps 1million is mano mano... i have no idea
Yea, its similar to Malay aswell.. (Satu, Dua, Tiga, Empat, Lima, Enam, Tugguh, Lapan, Sembilan, Sepuloh) Its probably the result of cultural links with our ancestors way bak.
Satu, dua, tiga, empat, lima, enam, tujuh, delapan, sembilan, sepuluh, sebelas, dua belas, tiga belas, empat belas, lima belas, enam belas, tujuh belas, delapan belas, sembilan belas, dua puluh, dua puluh satu, dua puluh dua, dua puluh tiga, dua puluh empat, dua puluh lima, dua puluh enam, dua puluh tujuh, dua puluh delapan, dua puluh sembilan, tiga puluh, tiga puluh satu, tiga puluh dua, tiga puluh tiga, tiga puluh empat, tiga puluh lima, tiga puluh enam, tiga puluh tujuh = 1 to 37
tiga puluh delapan, tiga puluh sembilian, empat puluh, empat puluh satu, empat puluh dua, empat puluh tiga, empat puluh empat, empat puluh lima, empat puluh enam, empat puluh tujuh, empat puluh delapan, empat puluh sembilan, lima puluh, lima puluh satu, lima puluh dua, lima puluh tiga, lima puluh empat, lima puluh lima, lima puluh enam, lima puluh tujuh, lima puluh delapan, lima puluh semibilan, enam puluh, enam puluh satu, enam puluh dua, enam puluh tiga, enam puluh empat = 38 to 64
enam puluh lima, enam puluh enam, enam puluh tujuh, enam puluh delapan, enam puluh sembilan, tujuh puluh, tujuh puluh satu, tujuh puluh dua, tujuh puluh tiga, tujuh puluh empat, tujuh puluh lima, tujuh puluh enam, tujuh puluh tujuh, tujuh puluh delapan, tujuh puluh sembilan, delapan puluh, delapan puluh satu, delapan puluh dua, delapan puluh tiga, delapan puluh empat, delapan puluh lima, delapan puluh enam, delapan puluh tujuh, delapan puluh delapan, delapan puluh sembilan = 65 to 89
sembilan puluh, sembilan puluh satu, sembilan puluh dua, sembilan puluh tiga, sembilan puluh empat, sembilan puluh lima, sembilan puluh enam, sembilan puluh tujuh, sembilan puluh delapan, sembilan puluh sembilan, seratus = 90 to 100
Oh you can! You can! Why I know sites where you can learn it in English, German, Russian, Indonesian, French. :D If you want these sites, just send me an email, and I will send them your way. :D
not just cultural connection but because they are Malayo-Polynesian (Austronesian) people. Malays, Filipinos, Indonesians, Malagasy, Maori, and more. Check out "Austronesian Unity" video here on youtube.

The most similar language to Maori is Rapa nui.
Numbers in rapa nui:
tahi - rua - toru - ha - rima - ono - hitu - va'u - iva
tahi - rua - toru - wha - rima - ono - whitu - wharu - iwa.
WALOKEINELUSTful 1 year ago
This is cool - I'm doing Indonesian at university, and the numbers are very alike (as you'd expect since they're both Austronesian languages).
E.g.
satu dua tiga empat lima enam
tahi rua toru whā rima ono
Apart from one, the differences only really come down to a few sound changes. Very cool!
chrissomerry 1 year ago
@chrissomerry not to mention Javanese, as you go further the resemblance is even more striking!!

Javanese and Māori are in the same language family (Austronesian), although they're fairly distant. Many of the numbers are transparent cognates.
3. telu - toru
5. lima - rima
6. enem - ono
7. pitu - whitu
8. wolu - waru
Indonesian/Malay 2: dua - rua.

Toru - Telu (Javanese)
Rima - Lima (Malay, Indonesian, Javanese)
Ono - Enam (Indonesian), Anam (Malay, Javanese)
Whitu - Pitu (Javanese)
