We are suppose to go in January can you tell me if that is a great time to go for the beach. I have never been to Jamaica and we want to have alot of fun. Snorkeling, the whole thing. But I would have to be taught the snorkeling by the staff. According to the RIU website they do that kind of thing there. It is our 20th anniversary and we have never done anything like this. Any help please.

I just came home from Riu at Montego Bay, I totally agree with this review. When I was offered ganjah I just said no and was left alone. Only left resort 1 time cab driver took me to his friends shop first and didn't ask us. Was not happy with cab driver. I had a great time. GO AND HAVE SOME FUN.

Hi I enjoyed the vidoe, but I worried. I don't like bugs, cause I have a fobia. My question to you is, are there bugs in the rooms, and sand fleas? I was reading trip advisor and there were some horrible comments on thieves, bugs, and food. I leave in August, but wondering if I should switch hotels. I hope you will help - Thanks

@sharongra Im from Chicago and the beaches here are wonderful..I recently stayed at the Riu in April 2010 and the beach was not bad. I enjoyed my entire stay there and I just booked a trip, staying at the Riu for spring break April 2011. Can't wait. Hope this helps!

@jkills212 I've been to Jamaica 3x and I just recently stayed at the Riu which was my 2nd stay there. The cost of my trip both times were under 900.00 bucks. Hope this helps!

@10bellflower I was just in Jamaica in April 2010 and I stayed at the Riu..LOVED IT. Just booked another trip with my girlfriends for spring break in April 2011. I also visited Montego Bay in August 2009 and was caught in a major hurricane. It was horrible..we were rained in and we couldn't do anything. although prices are cheaper, I would not recommend going during hurricane season. Hope this helps!

@10bellflower i was just there for 10 days ..the weather was beautiful high 80's the whole time..the guys at the hotel said that there hottest weather is march and august reaching high 90's so is should be really nice when you go,,they dont have waiter service on the beach you have to go get your own food and drinks to bring to the beach

I was at the Riu for New Years 2010/2011... It was pretty good, however the "beach" is terrible. If the beach is important then avoid the Riu. Regarding drugs (weed and/or cocaine) basically every single male employee can get either for you. I was personally approached numerous times. Just smoke it it in your room, mind your business and no one cares.

I love Sandals - Please do not bitch about a Resort with staying there. As far as going to Dunns River Falls - go with a tour and you will pay much less. We got a private driver with a small van for 160USD for the full day. Had great time. Our Driver kept us safe and directed us to safe areas. Yea I know every one is looking for USD but when you are in a 3rd world country this is how many make a living. Just be Polite and you will not have any problem.

Theres no way you can't miss someone offering you "Jamaican Smoke". xD I never saw a tour nor did i buy any weed but still, you get offered Marijuana By vendors on the beach acting like they're selling beeded neclaces/wrist bands... Just listen for them to start whispering thats when you'll know they're talking about weed lol xD trust me i was offered about 100 times

Im a Jamaican here in Jamaica, and i like your review, i think your attempting to be fair. The harrasment situation here is real, but its not the order of the day. Those are just a few sad cases that annoy even me whenever i come across them. The drugs are targeted at foreigners because your image is that you like them, just as how we have an image. I just got home from the RUI in Montego Bay. Excellent place. Great for families, Did Dolphin Cove, Dunns Falls, Dreamer Catamarans,  etc. No problems with the locals and never saw a drug dealer etc. I cant wait to go back !

i stayed there this past week. it was great i love every minute it was beautiful. very great review entertainment was great we had small kids the staff was great and caring.. but u need to be careful about the entertainment staff sometimes they go alittle to far i had to put them in place a couple times. they were scared of me after the first day

thanks for the great review. Couple of things on my mind, as I'm considering going to Riu Montego soon with my 3 year old daughter:

1) read a lot about unusual amount of insects, both on the beach, as well as in some beds (!). Did you run into this or heard anyone complaining about this?

2) there is very little shade on the beach. Do they have any sun umbrellas to rent or something?

3) how bad was airplane traffic, the resort being so close to the airport?

Great video on Riu Montego Bay! We are going there next month with our three children. I was wondering about the dress code in the restaurants for the kids. Also, I read that there are only a few non smoking areas and the rooms smell of smoke...is that true? And, did you have to tip everyone, all the time?!
