Its not the sword that controls the undead, its the Helm. Frostmourne will be destroyed during the final battle. Remember, Arthas wasnt the Lich King until he put the Helm on. Its the Helm...it has always been...the...Helm.

My speculation is that Darion decides to become the new Lich king as he is a death knight and there is no point in him living. He becomes the Lich king but keeps his mind and tells the players and faction leaders that he will keep the scourge in check and will not make them attack azeroth but warns them that if they go near them the undead will attack them (lore and gamewise, makes sense) and than he takes up Frostmourne. Just my speculation. I'd carry on with some things but out of space.
In the artwork for the patch, Frostmourne is displayed lying broken in the snow next to an empty helmet. Maybe Frostmourne itself isn't essential to the role of the Lich King.

nearing the end of wotlk, i was starting to to wonder if they would explain what happens to the scourge or if they just move on, screwing up the lore again, but i think they got it right here. My guess was always that it breaks up, powerful DKs or liches make small factions, leading to future undead content......but if they wanna make a william turner then that works to.

I think Darion Mograine will assume position as the lich king, considering he shows a lot of hatred for Arthas since he was resurrected. Tirion isnt the type to sacrifice his strong sense of honor for the sake of revenge.

I think FOrdring is the Next Lich King. He's shown a lot of anger since WotLK. Al retribution paladins (like Arthas) are the first to fall. -(Just like Warrior Jedi like Anakin, and Mace windu who attempted to Execute the sith Lord... tsk tsk, so not Jedi Ethical.

I also find it so pradictable that Holy Paladins (Wise Jedi like Yoda)-Never fall. Yet the retribution Paladins, (like Anakin and MAce windu) mess up (Maced tried to execute the sith lord in the office, not very ethically Jedi). And the retribution Paladins Like Anakin, and Arthas go Dark side..... Care to take a Guess in the blind dark whats gonna happen to Fordring??? Who since the start of WotLK has shows a LOT of anger???? Fordring is the next Lich King I think)

nearing the end of wotlk, i was starting to to wonder if they would explain what happens to the scourge or if they just move on, screwing up the lore again, but i think they got it right here. My guess was always that it breaks up, powerful DKs or liches make small factions, leading to future undead content......but if they wanna make a william turner then that works to.

ok, well if you have seen some pics you will know that there is a fire boss named like fire lord or something. but his model looks just like bolvar except..... well it looks like bolvar was put into a oven and his armor got cooked into his skin. anyways my theory is that bolvar was still alive after the gas at the wrathgate and was burned by the dragons. now that the new fire twisted bolvar is in the lichkings gasp i think he is going to be the last boss ( or a very big one) in IC. new LK = wryn
