D&D Weapons #6 - Class weapons, proficiency, & penalties for non-proficient use

What I've basically done is turned your THAC0 into a skill. Weapon proficiencies are skills that are broken down into "Simple", "Martial by weapon group (one for swords, one for polearms, etc), and "Exotic" which would need to be taken separately for each singleton weapon.

Feats like "Weapon Focus" and "Weapon Mastery" can still be bought that add additional bonuses on top of your skill-based THAC0, but they are for a single weapon (longsword or halberd, etc).

I should also note, simple weapons overlap. A Quarterstaff is a simple polearm, so you can choose to apply either Simple Weapon Proficiency or Martial Weapon Proficiency (Polearm) skill as your THAC0.
