That set was made because Mattel the company that makes the barbies wanted to get Ken sales back up and so they made Ken digital he has a Facebook page and everything. But that set was a valentine special because Ken was asking barbie to forgive him and to come back to him. They even had a competition for a new ken but barbie took the original Ken back. They even have a site telling the whole break up and them becoming friends again to them being together again.

Barbie and Ken were never married before because if you look at all of the other boxes they say stuff like "Dream" wedding. Mattel's reasoning was that Barbie is often still supposed to be seen as a teenager. I think that they are now making Barbie grow up a bit more and that's why they have this set. I used to get these Barbie magazines when I was little, and they had little comics about each new wave of Barbie in the late 80's - early 90's.
