  • beautiful song, beautiful video.

  • This song speaks to the fact that the singer is going back and forth with his faith. He believes but is easily shaken by things in this world... he has the faith of a mustard seed....

  • nickle creek mine the black xand up the middle fork same as the lite and save those red darnits another garnet.

    get this eire logging

  • I always thought of this song in terms of the stages of life pondered to it's end, wondering what really comes after. The story compares and contrasts the convinced and committed christian true believer with the uncomfortably sincere protagonist admitting to honest doubts. but the problem is he's stuck there, with questions he can't answer or resolve yet, but it's too late: he's already experienced too much and 'outgrew' his old childlike traditional christian faith, and is stuck at that stage

  • This video was just added to a music playlist at JustPlay.fm

  • Chris Thile and Sarah, Wow! You are our fav. -- Adrian and Julian, twins who sang to Punch Brothers backstage in VT. I really love your music.

  • This song has motivated me to renew my faith.

  • This is an amazing twist on this song. I cried when i first saw it. Beautiful job... really does touch on the emotional scars left behind and how they can wreck even the good in our lives. The power lies in its simplicity. Good job!

  • great interpretation, way to expand and add depth to the meaning. thank you.

  • the harmonizing in this song is orgasmic

  • This song really reaches my heart. That's my problem now a days. So many people have let me down I have only of little faith for everyone. This song is like my hearts crying.

  • I just really loved that! :)

  • remy, once again,1 year later,i come back to this, glad it is still here, and yes,it made me cry again.

  • The song it has convicted my heart, it's a very good song. May the almighty God continue to give you wisdom to sing more music because some of us our hearts where already dead but when we listen such songs we get healed the power of God through songs. God bless you.

  • very sad but very good. if you didnt say anything i would have thought this was the real video for the song.

  • Man...amazing job. This is my favorite song of all time. Pretty much the story of my life and pattern of my thoughts. Amazing interpretation also. First time I've ever cried during music video, so that's gotta count for something. :) check out my music when you get time! Thanks for this.

  • Excellent Video! I'd never really considered this potential interpretation of these lyrics, but it's a very interesting perspective. Makes me want to cry though, and I'm a 21 year old guy. Props for creating such powerful, effective video. I've seen a lot of short film-like directing videos and this is one of the best.

It's seems from the few comments I read that people are bashing you for taking a song with scriptural origins and reapplying it? That's goofy, and I'm a passionate christian.

  • faggotry

  • The song sounds like it's most likely religious.

TheRemyRadioShow chose to interpret it in another way. Like so many before have said, the video is about her lack of faith in men because of her abusive father (as you can tell at 0:51 where the man's holding a belt presumably to beat her). "Doubting Thomas" also has a double meaning. She is DOUBTING Thomas and she is A doubting Thomas. The video is simply a different interpretation. There's no crime in interpretation.STOP BASING IT. IT'S GREAT.

  • I feel this song in my heart and soul. I love it though. I've always loved Nickel Creek.

  • This is a really good video. Very sad. Was it filmed in Iowa?

  • i think a song means to you whatever it means to you. music has an amazing ability to evoke in each of us something different. words have different connotations for each of us based on the journey we've been on. music is another type of art and artists hope for response to their art whatever that may be.

  • good lord. chills.

  • I honestly think your speculation is more realistic.. I honestly have always taken this song as relating a present day person to the characteristics of doubting Thomas- a person who doubts everything. I think it's beyond religious meaning. It's someone who is unable to find comfort or believe in anything. I've always personally related to this song due to my own abusive upbringing and my natural insecurity about people, to be honest.. And I'm also religious so it helps haha

  • this is the best thing in the world.

  • I don't know how I randomly fell upon this video, but this -is- a very interesting take, and very well done, honestly. I'm impressed, good job.

  • Love

  • Crying....

  • wonderful...

  • It's a really good video, and of course the song is terrific too.

  • Loved your video...it's very inspiring and professional! Keep up the good work!

  • The video does work ell love it! s good!

  • i think what the song really means is that, he's scared to die, because he doesnt know for certain what lies ahead, which scares him, but in the end he takes his promise in a blind act of faith and trust that God really is what he says He is

  • interesting rendition of the song. That pedestal-ish shot when she runs into the field as a child looked great.

  • ok great vid very well done amazing but i do have one question....what happens next

  • @mikes172000 This song is actually talking to God. It's just saying that regardless of the doubt and fear, "I'll take Your promise."

  • Great Job.

  • I thought the video was very well done. Very sad, just as the song is. Don't know why I'm drawn to such sad melodies. The flashback where the girl runs off the porch with the stuffed animal, the red screen door shutting, then the girl running into the field. Then the short clips of her slowly sitting closer and closer to him, to finally have her head on his shoulder, very timid. Wow. Don't know why, but those parts really affected me.

  • Great. Real professional job, what a band- they're missed.

  • Very good job from a creative viewpoint. Tight scenes, varied shots, good use of symbols and people,...........what's not to like!

  • I agree. This is about doubting your religion, not just the boyfriend/girlfriend thing. "Can I be used to help others find truth When I'm scared I'll find proof that it's a lie?" Good question. The religions that preach the "great commission" seldom address it. Thank you, Nickel Creek, for bringing this out in the open.

  • this song is about doubting your faith specifically not just doubting in general if you did know that

  • For The Laird, Threadonians and Lady Candice. Thank you.

  • That was amazing... I actually have a lump in my throat after watching that. AMAY-ZING!!

  • Great video. From a technical perspective a lot of the shots were simply great. My only criticism is to emphasize on the story. As cool as the shots were, a lot of them confused me with regards to what they were trying to convey. You did this splendidly in a lot of your shots, but keep that consistency. The communication should precede the glitz and glam, in my humble opinion.

  • That is a beautiful girl

  • Very cool :] thanks for the video, I really enjoyed it

  • how old is this band?

  • you guys are awesome! you guys made me miss nickel creek all of a sudden!! you guys made me remember the day i fell in love with nickel creek with their "this side" song.

this could be a really great music video for doubting thomas! good job, guys! oh, nickel creek, i love your music! i will reminisce their songs for a while. ~

  • this is amamzing :)

  • very beautiful video!

  • THis is a really well done video. Good job. YOu should use it to promote them getting back together.

  • so love this song. I used to only be able to find it on here on some weird Church Youth video. You did a nice angle ...

  • This is really really amazing.

  • I'm not a professional or anything, but I thought that this was done very well.

  • cool vid

  • Like the interpretation. As an aspiring photog/editor, I enjoyed the focus shift and extreme close-ups; it gives the video an emotional connection.

  • You sound like My brother. Take this example then, you cannot see wind, but you see how it shapes waves. And use that brain of yours if you so have one.

It's not that religion ruins conversation, non-believers ruin it by there ignorance.

God bless you anyway, I bet your an

    Amazing person.

  • Tomato, don't make this a creation argument there are enough of these on YouTube go find one. And also, yes it is very much about the bible and God, take closer look at the lyrics... Oh and, how do know that u have a brain if you haven't seen it?

  • @jesvsfreak Well they can take your brain out of your head and you can see it so that made no sense at all. Stop relating god to everything. Religion ruins conversations

  • This is nothing about god, who is god? No one has ever seen him or have proof of him so dont act like he is something. I am not hating on anybody but im just saying

  • Continued........ Oh and that there WILL be little habits u won't like about the other person. But thats life. May u grow old and grey still enjoying life together as god plans. God bless all who want marriage, are married and are engaged.

  • Hey, yea I'm getting married next yr me and my girl have been together 3 .5 yrs (since yesterday)!!!. Our motto is that it is us 2verses the world. We never fight. We understand eachothers views and always put god first, and ourselves in the others shoes. This especially means other people getting involved. If u would be jealous of the thing ur doing if she was doing it, don't. In the end, understand that ur still young, hormones are still strong, and save sex for marriage. Oh and that there WI

  • Thank you Dragon83527!! Never realized anyone was paying attention...lol!!

Well I know where my heart is but I do have doubts about where her's is.. well I guess it is all virtual anyway as another of my friends on line once told me...

yes this is an on line thing going on between us and I suspect I am losing as it continues..

  • My struggle is not in doubting GOD or HIS BIBLE (I put them in all caps out of respect, I'm not yelling)! My struggle is of my own weakness and frailty. I know that GOD is real, and sent CHRIST that HE might forgive all men, but I see my own faults and I know that they put CHRIST on HIS cross! The thing is, JESUS would have died on the cross just to save one person (even if that one person was just me). Read "Men and brethren, what shall we do" on facebook's Click yes if you like the Bible! Amen

  • What will be left when I've drawn my last breath? Hurtful moments, helpful moments? What are we here for?

  • This filming and plot is a very expert and creative take on the song! Could you also do an alternative version with someone struggling with their faith on God or religion? That would be wonderful!!

  • ... because when you wake up , your makeup's perfect ..

but that's beside the point .

    this song hits deep

  • This is beautiful. Wonderful film work. Such a great song, and a very interesting take on the meaning. Well done! :D

  • wow! makes me not want to ask my girl for her hand, she may do this to me! sorry for that input it is a very strong message and good video ...

  • @rennaissancebiker Marriage is a very scary thing because it should be a lifelong committment! Don't rush it if you doubt that either of you are ready, but when you do ask her hand, know that the committment is real and true in your own heart, and that it will take both of you to make it work! "Work" is the key word, because it takes work to make it work. Love is something we do, not a place where we exist! Hope this helps a little. Ephesians 5:22-33 is a great Bible study for anyone who marries

  • @Dragon83527 and your right it is a life long commitment at least that is the way I was brought up and yet so many fail nowadays...

  • @Dragon83527 it is very saddening... especially when you find it going no where and it has become one sided, without a response from the other and yet you know they are wanting to say something yet they will not... very saddening and when you pray and then you know that other song about thanking God for unanswered prayers. well I'm tired of my prayers being unanswered!

  • Great video of one of the best songs ever.

    And very beautiful man :]

  • Sometimes i lay in the grass when im depressed to

  • It's just a different take. We get the real meaning...but we are artists. Thanks for the input!

  • @TheRemyRadioShow I believe this song speaks to me as talking about "trust" Which I myself dont have much of.....for instance: a relationship I wanted to stay together forever didnt happen and I wanted it to so badly that I didnt care for anything else, but when it did fall apart my "trust" disappeared forever and I will never be able to trust anyone else,.....I constantly push myself away and there is always that fear there that something bad will be the outcome.....even when its not the case.

  • @georgiaboy27 I wanted the family and love that my parents held for me and when i couldnt find it...I gave up on it all together......even though there is love and hope for me to start over, I just run the other way......thank you for letting me post this.

  • @TheRemyRadioShow The song is a general theme of loss of faith or rather the inability to trust outside of oneself because they can't trust in themselves. So the interpretation is as valid as anything in it's nature. While the song has it's religious overture of tone, it's general meaning is just as valid as whats featured in the video. She's unable to trust in love because she can't trust herself to love.

  • This is a song about faith in God, Heaven, and the promise of salvation. The video is well-directed and the images are moving, but the visual story line of a woman flaking out on a romantic relationship really has nothing to do with the song lyrics. The song is a prayer, not a Dear John letter. Sorry, for me, it's a total miss.

  • @DeepBlueCheesecake Not everyone interprets it the same. The lyrics can have different meanings for someone else. Sorry it was a miss for you, I liked it.

  • @DeepBlueCheesecake i agree. Nice images in the video, and nice cinematography. Acting is, meh, though. The song is pretty, but doesn't belong with the video aside from tone of the music itself. Good job, but there could have been a different, more appropriate song.

  • its funny how sometimes it feels like you hear songs for a reason.....like the lyrics talk straight to you or can relate so easily...especially with such a beautiful melody its so easy for emations to come out.

  • I believe that many or even most of us doubt what love really is. To me, it involves time, experience, and connections and it is those things that ultimately define love for us. Letting go is one of the most definitive marks of love. Love is not ownership. Marriage is a legalized form of bondage and has hurt so many people. The video shows this in her disgust at his proposal as though it had diminished in her mind what she thought they had. This video clearly shows this to me.

  • I love this. Video and song.

  • this is onother one og Nickel Creeks songs check it out, these are the lyrics

  • If you really like this song and want a lyrics a video, ill make on when i get 10 requests...

  • Love it. Great Job! (And excellent choice of song of cooourse!)

  • AMAZING :)

  • O.O Is this the actual music vid for this song? Because this is totally amazing.

  • this song is my favorite song by Nickel Creek!! It's beautiful

  • 1:37... amazing

  • Good Job! One of my favorite songs and I like the concept you put with it. Obviously relatable, keep up the good work!

  • Great job man...I always listen to this song when the doubts of this world get pull me down..Oh we of little faith ! "All things are possible to him who believes" Mark 9:23

  • aww.. I'll marry him instead!!!

  • simply beautiful. You did a wonderful job on this man. This song is amazing in and of itself, but you really painted a wonderful picture of the metaphors.

  • Full Quality

  • very nice! :')

  • this is a really great video. i think yall got it right. wonderful song

  • wow this was amazing. you are an excellent director!

  • shouldn't this video be called "Doubting Tiffany" or Doubting Theresea? or Doubting Tina? B/c it's a woman and not a man.

  • doubting thomas in this context is used as an expression... like negative nancy...

  • gave me goosbumps. Great vid :)

  • favorite part.."time that i've waaaaaaasted" man such a great use of a lyric

  • Excellent portrayal of the feelings behind the lyrics! I appreciate the way you visually expressed the tugs of emotion. Great job!

  • I love this song it makes me cry every time! I loved the video! Good job!

  • Great song, great shots, great feel....

    It sucked.

Kidding. I thought it was awesome. Very impressive.

  • this probably has to be one of my favorite songs ever.. i love it :-) it has a very nice country feeling to it.. makes me remember going skiing through the pine trees with my mom and the dog :) i love it

  • Absolutely beautiful video! I love that the letter is being written before the lyrics actually come up. Overall, just beautiful.

  • It's funny, I only watch this video just so I can listen to the song. But it is a good video.

  • in both aspects

  • its not just about the love that she has for her man, but the love for God. and i too am a doubting Thomas.

  • Really beautifully shot. Great work.

I have worked on many music videos and this is really well done.

I hope you get some work out of this.

    Congradulations.

  • I'm a Doubting Thomas =(

  • Beautiful song with a totally different meaning in it for everyone. Really like this idea of it in the video. Such a neat thing how one song can mean so many things to different people.

  • oh. that wasn't the "official" video. huh. i work on a boat and am away from tv for months at a time. this was the best return to land i've had. thank you.

  • wow, this is beautiful. it brought tears to my eyes!

  • Wow. Great job!!!!

  • Kick ass job. Very well done

  • Bingo! Thanks for watching almost to 100k!! :)

  • you have a beautiful talent. Please never stop making you art the world needs people like you in it.

  • Great video! Terribly sad, but well done and thought-provoking. You're right, doubt can be contagious.

  • I was already a huge fan of this song, and I thought your video was a really interesting interpretation and beautifully shot. Well done.

  • Approaching 100k! :)

  • did you notice in the other video "this side" you can spot glen phillips sitting on the couch at 1:30 quickly ?!!

sorry im commenting here but that video doesnt show in south africa when im logged in. glen's the best

  • so many times ive watched this, has it been a year now? i pray that this is always here, for it shows a part of my life, and i know that it shows the same to others, youve touched more peeps in your work than you will ever know.thank you

  • That was awesome!! Great job!!

  • I really like this video. It's so sad, but I love it (: And, it definitely spoke to me. I never doubt God's power in my life, but I do tend to doubt my relationships. Thank you (:

  • I love youtube if only for the fact that it gives people an outlet for creativity like the above video. It doesnt matter what this video means to anyone else but you. It could be about childhood, adulthood, adult relationships, childhood relationships, physical/mental abuse, the concept of us never really growing up-which the young girl respresents

Great video. Loads of really clever touches in there-loved it.

(The video is clearly not about religion-maybe change the predictable record??)

  • This is a good video... but I don't really get the beginning... so this guy proposes to his girlfriend... then she says no, but then she says yes, and then she gives the ring back... and I don't get the rest of it... like the stuffed bunny...

  • Those are flashbacks to her childhood, the proposal...and so on.

  • I get that... but what does her childhood have to do with doubting her relationship with her boyfriend?

  • She had an alcoholic/abusive father...there is a hint of a belt in his hand as he walks toward her in the living room scene. In turn, doubting the significant male figures in her life.

  • @TheRemyRadioShow Makes plenty of sense to me. My childhood was abusive, so I have the same exact problem that "she" does in the video. I am married, yet I still find myself doubting...Abuse messes your perception up permanently...

  • my opinion of it was that her alcoholic (possibly abusive) father has made her distrust men to the point that she is reluctant to commit to a marriage with a man that clearly loves her very much and wouldn't hurt her

  • "If there's a master of death I'll bet he's holding his breath, As I show the blind and tell the deaf about his power...Can I be used to help others find truth, When I'm scared I'll find proof that its a lie,"

It's not specifically about the Apostle Thomas, but it is about someone who realized that they can't be an effective witness when they are doubting God themselves. The broken "promise" is having accepted the call to Go and show people God - telling the deaf would be a fruitless effort.

  • too bad they didn't capture what the song was actually about...it's about doubting the existence of god...so booooo

  • The meaning of the song is pretty obvious...we get it. However, we decided to take a different approach artistically. Thanks for your input.

  • What is it with people and saying that all of Nickel Creek's songs are about God.

Let me guesse you think that "the Lighthouse" is about God comitting suicide.

    Get a Life

  • i was aiming my comment at this song specifically. thanks.

  • This song is quite obviously about one's doubt in God - it's name is "Doubting Thomas" - like the disciple in the Bible that doubted Jesus' resurrection until he saw it himself - an obvious Biblical reference. Why is it we are often called "closed minded" for bringing up God - but then are be-littled for pointing out an obvious reference to God. THAT is pretty closed minded in my book. You can deny and be-little all you want friend...it doesn't change what the song is about. :)

  • well im not saying that its stupid that you are saying that its about god but its not what this song is about. even nickel creek doesnt think its about god

"douting thomas" is a phrase not that nickel creek came up with but yes is a phrase about the apostle thomas.

but thomas never had any promises he cant keep

the song is about a lover having doubts about their relationship

  • Oh wow. I thought this was like... their official music video! O_o Really REALLY great job on it!

  • Great video you did an awesome job!! This should be the real music video of this song!

  • Thanks for making this video! It made me cry everytime I watched it! I DEMAND more nickel creek vids!!!

  • Cool vid! But the song's not about a relationship or a marriage. It's about doubting one's faith in God.

  • i think about jesus everytime i hear this! =]

  • Wow! That was great! I almost cried though! :/ Love this song, this vid made it even better! Awesome job!

  • Is this sung by Chris or by Sean? It sounds lke Chris, but I´m not sure. Thanks :-)

  • Its Chris

  • when i 'm listening to this song i've to think about a beautiful girl

  • This video is beautiful. Very good job. Very...good job

  • Excellent job.

  • This keeps popping out on my youtube recommends. And yes, I love it.

  • I really enjoyed this! Beautifully haunting video.

  • This was a really great video you put together. I really hate the cheezy, lame stuff that people put on Youtube, and I was skeptical when I clicked on this. Keep up the good work!!!

  • beautiful job.

  • hey remy...my favorite late night radio dj from college. haha! i miss your face. this is pretty awesome. was looking up nickelcreek music today (bc i am obsessed with Chris Thile) and randomly found this video you made. sweet nectar. hope all is well. stay in touch!-love from nashville-larken

  • I thought this was the actual video hehe. But major props way to go. you made me cry thought but thats ok

  • I hate you for making me cry and leaving it with a sad ending.

    j/k

  • I relate so much to this song. Gorgeous video.

  • Love this video. I can really relate to it and it got me a little teary eyed when I watched it the first time

  • Isn't the song about Thomas from the Bible? I always relate it to that.

  • yeah it is

  • i didnt even know there was a thomas in the bible...

  • Yeah, he was one of the twelve disciples, and I looked to make sure, and It is about him, when he doubted that Jesus had risen.

Such a beautiful song. And I love how this video was shot.

  • oh thank you!

  • No prob :D

  • ok, I love how you set it up with the song!

I give this ten thumbs up!

  • I watched this video again after a few months, and I have to admit, there are some AMAZING subtle parts which really hit hard (like the childhood...)

    once again, amazingly well done!

  • dang that was great :)

  • sick vid, and the chicks were crazy gorgeous
