  • I'm surprised no Monty Python fan who was a painter ever created Michelangelo's version of the Last Supper.

  • 2:30 - "twelve disciples and ONE CHRIST!" "One?" It's like these investment banks nowadays saying they've got loads of "managing directors"(!)

  • I still want to see that painting! Definitely the kangaroo!

  • I love and miss this comedy so much!

  • i´m giggeling my pants off, made my night, lol !!

  • alright, so how about we just put aside the Ade and Eric fued? I mean really, they are both comedy gods. so just watch the sketch and realize no matter who, this is pure comical genius.

  • lol!! great sketch.. it also gave me an idea :O... Blackadder 5..set in this era.. and blacky's the butler to the pope lol

  • I never thought I'd see Adrian and John in a sketch together

  • @Darkstar263 It looks like all British actors have worked with each other at some point.

  • @Darkstar263 The Young One locks horns with a Monty Python and both prove they still got it!

  • 2 comedy ledgens 2gether AMAZING!!

  • So there wasn't 9.333. disciples following each of the three Jesus'?

  • @HerrVonSpionage Plural is Jesii

  • Ade and Eric are both brilliant performers and comedians and they both did this sketch justice.

  • Look I think you all are being a bit hard on Adrian, it was not his fault if Eric is better for this sketch, I think they were both funny.Could have been worse, they could have given the role to Jonathan Ross then you'd have an egocentric retard trying to be funny and getting sued before he could finish his sentence at the same time.

  • Well despite all this argument that is going on, though I like Ade and Eric, if this was Eric's role, why is he not in it?

  • @Reephamike

Jonathan Lynn co-wrote this over the phone with Cleese; for the 1976 Amnesty show A Poke in the Eye with a Sharp Stick. They performed it with Cleese as The Pope and Lynn as Michaelangelo, playing him as an unworldly child in a world of his own. check it out here on youtube. It has no comments. It's the last great secret.

  • @tintinquarantino

I used to have an old Comic Relief book with this sketch in and used to read it often as a kid for the sheer brilliance of the writing – and I'm pretty sure it was credited in there as being written long before the '76 Amnesty gig. And I'm also pretty sure I remember it being credited to Cleese and Bill Oddie, and being written back in the 60s.

  • @stevebanjo You may be right, since a complaint of the show during its run was that it was missing something new - until Peter Cook satirised the Judge's "unbiased" summing up in the 1976 Jeremy Thorpe trial.

  • @tintinquarantino Correction - there's one comment....NOW. I like Lynn's version the most but seeing one of The Young Ones working with Cleese was a treat in itself.

  • i love when he does the fingers at the end. =]

  • Ade is much better!

  • eric was much better.

  • A classic sketch raped by an Eric Idle surrogate:/

  • I thought Adrians had more life and energy, really funny but Erics had a lot of subtle humour that is genial. Like were Eric goes "Errrr" and makes that face, cracks me up everytime xD

  • I like the confrontation with Eric better. John jumps down from his "throne" and seems far more aggressive after being called a fascist.

  • this is awesome. two of my favorite comedians in the same routine.

  • Maybe if they had Rik doing it instead of Adrian.

  • Adrian is more of a slapstick and extreme violence comedian - this is not his cup of tea..................The Young Ones are way better to me than Monty Python, I dig anarchist and punk comedies

  • Too good!!!

  • a great sketch butchered..

  • lmao

  • i don't like adrian at all, eric was better (and sexier) ;-))

  • John looks quite pissed by this terrible guy..

  • Eric was better, but then again, didn't he help write it? He played the character so well!

But oh well, Adrian doesn't play the part badly at all, it's just Eric is Eric!

It was John who played in the original isn't it?

  • Johnathon Lynn was the best in this, the first version so far as I know. It may even have been him that wrote it.

Eric Idle rushes it as if he can't wait for it to finish, and Lynn's shout of "ONE" is timed so much better and with much more shock.

  • @colliourebee You know, you're totally right, Jonathon Lynn WAS the first. All three of them have some great merits in their performances - Eric has a terrific double take, Ade is ... well, Ade, really. And Jonathan timed it really, really well. Great sketch regardless of which one is playing Michaelangelo!

  • Of course Eric was "better", he was the originator. But Ade Edmondson was HUGELY well known at the time this was recorded - this was after The Young Ones - and the Pythons have a history of using fantastic "subs" during the live Policeman's Ball performances (one year they had Rowan Atkinson as one of the Yorkshiremen). Ade is completely different from Eric, but for those of us who know British Comedy, it's a blast to see him onstage with Cleese doing this. He's bloody hysterical. :)

  • This guy sucks. Eric Idle is just the best.

  • At least it's still got John Cleese.

  • Eric Idles performance just flows this guy looks like hes over acting

  • They just copy-paste text from script in these acts or what :D

  • One?!?!?

Those guys play perfectly off each other.

  • Am I the only one who likes both?

  • you are not. I loved both of them

  • @weirdloopyloo they are both really good

  • @weirdloopyloo Am I the only one who thinks this is funnier?

  • @insainiac33

Yes, youre the only one that think its funnier.

  • @Wacek4444 Ah good.

  • @weirdloopyloo Nope, I like them both too.

  • Eric was much better

  • it's good but eric does it way better

  • have been reading what pepole say here. I love both eric and ade. and besides, adrian is so good at beeing super-angry, almost as good at it as cleese, so if ade didnt scream and yell in this one it would not be as funny

  • I was worried he would jump down like he did with Eric Idle. Still a great version.

The Secret Supper by Javier Sierra gives all the details ;)

  • lol adrian in tights YES!! loved the vid!

  • I like Aide. Yeah, Eric's great, but this is different. You get the calm and pissed off Cleese (great) and the worked-up near frenzied energy of Vivian from The Young Ones.

    Cheers!

  • Yes, I agree with everyone else....but then we're just showing our ages I suspect. Aide Edmonson wasn't that bad, he's just suffering from not being Eric Idle :)

  • oh gosh yes, the other one was sooooo much better.

  • Eric Idle is better than this guy but Eric Idle is better than just about anyone in my opinion. Plus I like when John leaps down off his chair to scream at Idle in the other, obvious due to height limitations he couldn' really do that here but still. It was a nice touch.

  • I prefer the old one with idle...

Not only because idle's in but cleese gets a bit more angry in that one...

  • yeah, me too. eric was way better

  • Yeah, I like the one with idle more too, he's my favorite python, and I think cleese does a better job in the last one, and eric does a better job of michelangelo than this guy. and this guy is way to angry at the pope, in the other one it's funnier cause eric acts all clueless which makes it funnier. this is also my favorite monty python sketch.

  • this version sucks! the one with eric idle is the best

  • It's not that bad, but it is a lot better with Eric.

  • a last supper i command from u and a last supper i shall get, with 12 disciples and one christ..

    ONE!!!

    LMAO

i love the chemistry between them both

  • This version is good, but I still prefer Eric Idle.

  • I still prefer Eric Idle's Michelangelo to this other guy. But this is hilarious nonetheless.

  • Ades

    Prototype of vyvian the bastard

  • 1989 was after the young ones finished

  • The version from the hollywood bowl is the best but this is still good. John Cleese looked very Popish.

  • Never knew this one existed!!! O_O

  • There is a dash of the old Vyvian Bastard, but it's still hilarious! They work well together!

  • i liked the version with eric idle better :)

  • Love those men.

  • I swear there were times Adrian lapsed back into Vyvyan.

  • haha, yeah his material just often tend to fall back to good ol' vyv

  • Much more an "Eddie Hitler" lapse if you ask me .... and there's nothing wrong with that!

  • There's times when Eddie Hitler seems like a lapse back into Vyvyan. I guess there's only so many ways to scream at someone without it all sounding the same.

  • Yep :)

  • Is it just me or does the Cube Johns sitting on keep getting bigger each time they redo this.

  • LMAO 28, is that too mnay? lol

  • Proof the Young Ones are the bastard child of Monty Python! Excellent sketch!

  • eddie or viviyan would od don the same proberly

  • Yay! Ade in tights!

  • I like Ade Edmonson a lot, but I think the original sketch (with Eric Idle) was better... anyway, I would love to see that painting! lol

  • this what happens when The Young Ones meets Monty Python! I was sure it had a link ;)

  • Nobody can play Michelangelo better than Eric Idle!

  • so its mocking monty python? wow how public.. poor skit monty pythons better

  • To be fair Monty Python stole it first!

  • vs the hollywood bowl version the michaelangelo is way more aggressive. I don't know if this is a good or bad thing, but imo to me it's bad. Edmondson is way more confrontational than Idle, which is weird because if michaelangelo was really that confrontational to the pope at that time, he'd be killed on the spot.

  • Consider this, though. Everyone knows Michaelangelo, but can you name the pope who commissioned the Sisteen Chapel?

No looking it up on Wikipedia!

  • duke Ludovico Sforza ordered the Last Supper from Leonardo, Francesco della Rovere (pope SixtusIV) had the chapel built

  • "It's just that there were 28 of them."

Brilliant skit. Never seen these two together before.

  • It was much funnier with Eric Idle.

  • It always makes me think of the young ones when ade shouts :P

  • Does anyone know why they used Michaelangelo and not Leornard da Vinci. I am sure there is some subtle reason...

  • Because it was a huge roof and not a smaller painting, hence the idea of more content.

  • i think it's because michelangelo couldn't get it done the way the pope wanted, so they fired him and then hired da vinci.

  • or its just a sketch and monty python are the funniest sketch artists! :D:D:D

  • Have to say I agree that next to Lynn's performance (and Idle's) Edmondson's seems a bit strained, but if I hadn't seen the other two...Cleese's performance must come from after his TV clash with Mervyn Stockwood - or is it my imagination that he's incorporated Stockwood's archness and pomposity into his Pope?

  • Painful to watch :(

  • my parents had the album where Ad Edmondson's part is taken by Johnathan Lynn - the album being, 'a poke in the eye with a sharp stick.'

Not too put too finer point on it, I thought (and think) this sketch was hilarious with Lynn, and I think its painful and shit here with Edmondson.

    Horses for courses.

  • Awful... Eric idle is much better, and Cleese lost his charms (yelling style) in this one.

  • roflmao, one of the best sketches and adrian makes it even better. A Bottom and Python mix!!

  • The original with Eric Idel is so much better... John Cleese is good, though.

  • ^Agreed!

    Monty Python ftw!!

  • is this anywhere on "flying circus"?

  • it was in "live at the hollywood bowl"

  • no i mean is the sketch on the dvds?

  • no it was not in "Flying circus", but if you get the 16 ton set, its on one of the black dvds

  • ooh okay thanks!

  • Is it just me or would anyone else have liked to have seen this "creative" painting? I absolutely <3 Ade!!!

  • the 1980 hollywood bowl version is way better, but this is still good.

  • The skit with Eric Idle was much better, he didn't overact like Edmonson did.

  • Ah well. Different styles.

  • Is that Vivian from The Young Ones?

  • yes, but it's spelt 'Vyvyan'

  • full name: Vyvyan Bastard.

"Bottom"-dwelling humourous. And very good at it, damn funny man.

  • Basterd.

  • yes

  • And you looks a complete bastard!

  • ooh he is a complete bastard:)

  • Don't you get it!? This is the "explanation" why Michaelangelo did not get to paint "The last supper". A brilliant scetch!!

  • lol Monty Python is at its best when they get 2 charecters arguein over even the simplist of things XD and Adrian Edmonson and John Clease!!!!???? DREAM COME TRUE!!!!!!!!!!

  • You do realize this sketch is a joke right? DaVinci painted the most famous depiction of the Last Supper, but it was a subject painted by MANY artists. This sketch is supposed to be the Pope arguing with Michelangelo over his depiction of the last supper (which he didn't actually paint). It's not about Leonardo's last supper.

  • somebody missed the joke...

They are implying he originally got michaelangelo to paint it but they didn't like his version so it was scrapped!

  • This is an excellent clip. Really good acting of both of them. Thanks for posting this.

  • cute hes wearing his wedding ring :)

  • the british are so brave!! I admire them so

  • lol he called the pope a fascist xD

  • @Iruparazzo That's why Cleese couldn't do it on television. It made the Beeb censors nervous.

  • i luv adrian.he is sooo funny. dose anyone know were i can get more videos . interviews with him.

  • this is a great sketch!

i didn't know that there was another version of it btw, could anyone post it?

  • Eric Idle was more convincing as a Michelangelo (Edmondson is clowning)

earlier John Cleese was more impetuous

sketch is brilliant, but I don't like this version

  • They did a good job, but it's not as good as Eric and John in Hollywood Bowl. Still, thanks for posting it

  • ohhhh adrian in tights, that's an impressive sight. :-) lol!!!!

  • Adrian Edmondson is crazy xD

  • eric idle is tunnes better

  • This is so funny. It's a favorite now. Thanks;)

  • this was done better on monty python live at the hollywood bowl eric and john are very good at this sketch

  • lol!!! thanks!!!

  • i love it. thanks for uploading.
