Mine just arrived this morning, was a couple of pounds on amazon, and it works great :) Thank you for reminding me to turn on the remote control function! I felt like an idiot for panicking at first, doh! Teaches me to be in a hurry to test it :P
I have a cheap SX1 camera that comes with a remote that can scroll thru the menu, press the shutter release, record video and zoom in & out.
And this professional camera has a remote that can only press shutter release? It can't even focus in & out (a must have for video as you dont have to touch the body/lens)? Canon needs to get their shit together,
What I don't like about the remote is that it doesn't take the pic right away, it's like it uses a 2 sec timer or something. Not good when u need to take the pic at that instant.
My SX1 camera was set to 2 seconds aswell. I assume for hiding the remote control in self-potrait shots. It can be easily changed to 0 second though (or any other number).
Ok, the remote shutter doesn't have a half-way position.
If you're in AF mode on your lens, when you press the remote shutter the camera will attempt to focus. If it achieves a focus lock it will beep, pause, and take a photo. If it can't focus, it won't take a picture.
So you could just stand in the group and fire the shutter remotely, you don't have to worry about pre-focusing. (There is a slight delay when using the remote).
All well and good... but WILL IT BLEND?

I have the other one which is rectangular and it has packed in or flat batteries.
I much PREFER the wired ones, £5 off ebay and nice robust build quality.

What about when taking video, can I press the shutter button for the camera to focus while taking video with the 550d for example?

do you have to be in front of the camera to use this remote or can you be behind the infrared of the camera?

The remote has to be pointing at the front of the camera, so you can't use it from behind.
When on a tripod and you're close, I've found that it works fine from the right hand side or below.

i have a question.
for example: you want to take a group shot.
do you focus the lens with the release button on the camera and then regroup yourself, and use the IR remote to to trigger the shutter?
-or-
are you in the group, you press the button half way on the IR remote, the camera focuses and then takes the picture?
