  • Horatio dodged through that rugby scrum of Royalist vs. Republican with ease.

  • we have the nelson's arm in tenerife island , but he never returned for him : /

  • The Marquis may have been a madman but he definatly isn't lacking in balls to fight to the last man

  • Horatio is use to his wonderful luck kicking in and he's out of his depth here. I hope it teaches him a lesson. Sometimes you have to stand up to someone whose been put over you. He's a mad man whose thinks that everyone else should die for him and his desires. / Even if Horatio got her out, who would accept them as a couple? Neither side. She goes with him because he's helped her people and that's it. She's not in love with him but goes because he won't go without her. So pathetic.

  • @Byzantine555Warrior stupid frog

  • @Byzantine555Warrior stupid frog

  • if you think about the music and that time and place..wouldn`t you fight for the last man ? fight with the royalists ...what a great time!

    wish i were there

  • I thought I was a nice person but when I saw those people carrying that horror of man to the guiteen(sp) I was so happy. I can't take in a person like him who would kill his own people for sport. When he said, "Viva la roi" I knew it had nothing to do with the royalty of France but his own selfish desires. Reminds me of plantation owners. To kill without justice or mercy is a serial killer. Like an animal that has gone mad and you have to put down. This was justice. The baker is revenged.

  • the french revolution transformed france in a big piece of scum

  • @2SpaceTraveller2 i agree

  • Too quick a death for the Marquis, I say. They should have hanged him.

  • Go Lobsters!

  • Funny how she can just call Horatio from her house all casual like the battle going on was just a soccer game. "Horatio you come in here this minute, dinner is on the table!"

  • Say of Moncoutant what you will, he did stick by what he believed in. Even if that wasn't as savoury as it should be.

  • @tyrannusBE VIVE LOUIS!

  • LMFAO! We're those Civilians Cheerign when he got his head cut off? LOOOOOOL!

  • @25kingjack they were cheering because they all got a peice of his cothing

  • moncoutant being guillotined is the best part

  • @MrRikkimule loved it lol

  • shut the fuzck up and watch the film you pseudo historians

  • The Duke is such an awesome character. I wish he showed up more in the show.

  • It shows how Napoleon Bonaparte excellent planing and timing caught the roaylist off guard almost well till the "Lobsters" found out at the last second.

  • @TheQuadStuff

This film is set in 1795. 1 year before the campaign of italy, Napoleon is not even a general in 1795. And he was not involved in this campaign

  • @solwen Ummm Napoleon was PART of the REVOLUTION yes at this time he wasnt a general but i mean come on look at the tacitcs 18 men to distract the british regulars and then take out the main royalist army what person besides napoleon bonparte could plan this...

  • @TheQuadStuff

France had plenty of good generals.

  • @TheQuadStuff Nonsense, again. What do you know about this fictional fight? Napolean wasn't even here. Stop kissing dead man arse

  • @MrVinSoft Nonsense? Napoleon was alive and was in King louis army as a ARTILLERY commander. and as you can see the "Revolutionists" could of put up lines of defenses any but they didnt cause thats typical so Napoleon outsmarted the king louis soilder and Great Britain and then they fell into his trap ware the royalists main force was destroyed before they considered attacking the smaller force. now ask your self this question name one person beside napoleon who could plan such a thing.

  • @TheQuadStuff I think Napoleon was at northen italy at this time.

  • @MateusVIII He might of been. but do remember Napoleon outsmarted his opponets. since his spys got the information at the right time for napoleon to counter it and crush it.

  • @TheQuadStuff but remeber that at this time Napoleon wasn't in comand of france he just comanded the armies in northen italy.

  • @MateusVIII That is True. But still name we one other person who is a frenchmen that used tactics like Napoleon did? cause i mean there was no cannon defenses on the beach. and not to say that what commander would attack the main royalists force with over what 28 cannons he said? and do remember napoleon was an artillery commander. Also what commander confuses the enemy of their postition of ware there attacking cause they were gonna blow the bridge up so the british and french would be stuck.

  • @TheQuadStuff Bonaparte did not even play a role at this time yet. Stop posting nonsense

  • Though it makes for a good show, no way a Captain in the Britannic Navy is going to lead at the oars. Besides, the dude would pull a muscle in a hurry, throw off the mens' rhythm, and be sore as hell in the morning!

  • @joshuaskennedy Actually, a lot of officers did that. It encouraged the men. What? You think they sat on their arse all day eating and shouting at the men? Not bloody likely, this isnt the American Navy you know!

  • @joshuaskennedy sir edward pellew would. he once dove in the Channel during a storm to save a sailor fallen into the sea. he and some other officers like Fisher and Cornwallis were revered by their men because they shared the same hardships

  • Sincere thanks for uploading the Hornblower series. Many years ago I visited Admirial Lord Nelson's flagship The Victory at Portsmouth. Seeing these ships and the crews in this series makes The Victory more real as a fighting "ship of the line" About 800 men were on board these ships in tiny cramped conditions. A tough and often brutual life. Love the British Navy uniforms they are so smart.

  • we love you Ioan Gruffudd!!!

  • 4:26 the Republicans sure kick ass

  • Horatio you fool, your supposed to catch the lady BEFORE! she hits the ground.

  • What a glorious death for the marquis...he died for what he believed in. at first i thought he was a royalist cause he wanted to live comfortably but his perseverance that brought him to say "vive le roi" even when faced with absolute certain death suggests he was fighting for an ideal of sorts. I guess he was on the wrong side of history and had strong intentions for an unpopular cause.

  • @equitemcroce ah, the wonderful "died for what he believed in" line. how is that a virtue? royalists and republicans alike died for what htey believed in. communists and nazis died for what they believed in.

  • @equitemcroce and the marquis was a bloody butcher of inocent men

  • @avalsonline oh, don't get me wrong, I'm no royalist or anything but I am impressed at our human condition to be able to resist and persevere so much...even if it's for a poor cause. In any case, it's not like the french revolution was really that much more moral...it was extremely violent and much was destroyed (not only buildings). Guess where the term "terrorist" finds its roots. The regime of the first french republic of Robespierre was referred to as "La Terreur", but that's a side note.

  • the Marquis fought til the end, shouting vive le roi as he is decapitated=awesome :P

  • I really doubt he would take her with him...a woman on a military ship? And in THAT time? no.... -_-

  • @EHSinister you would be suprised

  • @isaactrio I want to be surprised :P Show me! :)

  • blowing that bridge only good for blocking artillery movement. and even then only for like a day.

  • lol they going to stick him in his own guillotine

  • They all know english, they were stationd in england for a few years.

  • why the hell was Horatio yellin order's to the French troops in English? What are the chances of them knowing english?

  • hat are the chances of his girl knowing English seeing as she was just a peasant class girl?

It's TV, where cars explode when shot at, canons seem to fire explosives and everyone speaks English :).

  • @Timefliesbye Maybe it's the translation convention...they're both "speaking French", but depicted as speaking English so the actual actress wouldn't need to speak French.

  • Could be but we both had a taste of Hornblowers French back when the Spanish declared war. I can vouch for it being at best Improvised :).

BUT this is again TV so what are we really arguing about I mean even Aliens speak English or any other language that happens to be used in the country it is broadcasting in..

  • 7:45 the jump was rather funny - she came flying out the window like she was sitting on a chair. Goodness me!

8:00 he was his own worst enemy - just desserts! With people like him running the town no wonder the peasants rebelled. How foolish of him - if he'd been kind like Horatio this would never have happened (:-) The alternative, ie: Napoleon - also an elitist & mass murderer! (Albeit he left great legacies in Science & higher learning, Law, Agricultural trade, Weights & Measures, builds)

  • How on earth could one "blow a trunnion off"? Saw it off perhaps, but that would be a long job.

  • yeah and if they did that why bother spiking in the first place?

  • she needs to keep her cap on!

  • If she'd even climbed half the way down, then jumped, she probably wouldn't have broken her leg...

  • Steel helmets of republicans.... isint going for cavalry usualy?

  • they wear casquetts (or a similar cap); they're visored caps made of leather, with perhaps some brass reinforcements. the US artillery wore them in the late 1780's, at least on campaign. elements of the british army did as well.

but yes, cavalry normally recieved them as well-usually light horse. the provosts for general washingon were described as wearing them, as was the light horse of philedelphia..

  • It's called "tarletons"

  • true; but contemporary writings also called them "Casquetts", "caskets", among other names. tareleton iirc is a post American revolution name.

as long as its visored and made of leather/brass, it can be called so.

  • I'm not a XVIIIth century expert, but I guess this movie is exploiting a lot of clichés that defy historical truth.

I'm not sure every french village had it's own guillotine -_-' There only was some in Paris, or maybe Lyon, big towns where the "Terror" made thousands of victims, innocent or not...

  • He brought the guillotine with him.

  • The Colonel brought it with him... geez didn't you watch the whole episode?

  • serves him right

  • The guy who plays the marquis is a brilliant actor.

  • @Ardunafeth got to be good.... for i just hate him...

  • He brought his death on himself coming back to France with that shambles of his army. And double sealed the deal by going decapa crazy.

  • pretty funny when the Marque's soldiers fire, silence, the dusk clears and the republicans are still marching, totally indifferent.

  • yeah it was an intimidation tactic, though not typically preformed by the normal infantry!

  • Damn I sort of feel sorry for the Marque. You have to admit it was a sad moment.

  • Bullshit, I'm sick of someone falling in love in every movie. It was a personal victory!

  • Bullshit, the Marque was a total douchebag and he deserved what he got

  • You sound like a mature member of society...

  • Did the republicans really have that good uniforms at this time?

  • The Republic had a lot of national pride, despite the terror. They also copied the American's uniforms because of their revolution.

  • Yes, but I was talking practially. Considering the turmoil in France during this time, plus the big amount of recruits, I wonder if the uniforms really were of that high priority. I've heard that in many regiments, only the jackets and the hats were of a single colour, and the colour of the rest of the uniforms differed from soldier to soldier.

  • Some of them still wore the royal regimental uniforms, some of them didn't even have shoes but clogs. But the blue-white-red uniforms weren't copies from the American ones, it was rather symbolic : They wore blue-white&red because they were supposed to embody the nation and these colours are the French colours since the Revolution.

  • "bon!" ;D loooool

  • Second that :D He may be something of a villan, but that part? All I can say is lol.

  • finally the bitch dies

  • Points and five stars to Archie for stalling....and then absolutely refusing to kill his friend. He was such a good and honorable soul.

  • Love that:" jump! Jump!" Not jump I'll catch you

  • 7:46 They put him facing up. Ouch.

  • I butchard my last entry should read I read these stories as a young lad, in the books he made it all the way to Fleet Admiral

  • 6:33 Look closely hes getting hit with an axe!!!! Ouch!

  • What the hell! Why does she have to die?

  • That sounded like a terrible break

  • "bon" hahahahahahahahahaha

  • okay i know this is a stupid question but i know the lopsters are the britsh who are the frogs

  • frog = bad word for frenchman

  • hollywoodwherewolf, : up yours baby :-)

  • the extra has a hole in the crotch of his pants

  • I wonder how many times those extras-and stuntmen had to switch jackets, from British Red to French Royalist white or Republican blue?

  • @hollywoodwerewolf None. There were extras for each army and crew. I was one of them. Of the cannon crew. And this was filmed in Portugal. :)

  • @MrSilviolpleno Really...now I like the series even more.

  • In best Baldric voice: "Death to the Aristoes!"

Isn't that the girl from the old Renault adverts?

    Papa? Nicole?

  • yes it is

  • shit, the girl dies ;(

  • Do everyone a favor. Don't post stuff like that.

  • Do me a favor, don't be a negative nancy

  • That was more because he/she ruined that part of the episode for me. I'm not being negative at all.

  • @t800rad2 what horblower? But it is great you would do a favor if don't wrote stuf like that.

  • 8:02 to 8:06

I could watch this scene all day.

In order to defend royal interests, the British would support even wretched causes. Shame.

  • you are completely right. Normally I am quite fond of the british and their discipline, but they would support every little uprising or cause if it would be in their benefit.

They are well known for being sinister.

  • All governments support causes with similar ideologies. The British did it, the Americans did it, the Soviets did it, the Japanese did it, even the French did it. And as idealistic as the French Revolutition was, it still was marked by the Terror.

  • History shows that the british were very fond of supporting countries invading the weaker ones, while still staying in diplomatic relations with the country invaded. Thats called backstabbing to the bone.

  • Are they worried about blowing up the bridge cos they think Hornblower isn't going to be able to get across a 20 foot stream with no current?

  • Maybe it was deceptively deep :P

  • hahaha styles face at 3.27

    i love hornblower :)

  • As much as I love this series (and Capt. Bellew) - he or any RN Captain would NEVER row like a common seaman. That is BS.

  • it's Capt. Pellew btw and he would there are record showing that he was a good capt. that was loved my his crew. Moreover he once swam out in the storm to a wreck in order to save commen sailers

  • Exactly. It shows dedication to his crew, rather than to hierarchy

  • hurrah for old nosey!!!!

  • @matt2house Hurrah indeed!

  • 4:08 "I will not leave again!"

I don't think he knows how true that statement is.

But whatever. I hate that guy anyway.

  • i m amazed the loyalist french fought with the english since we had fought them in two previous war within 50 years of this incident. the 7 years war and the american war of independence.

  • Vive L'Empereur.

  • VIVE Le ROI!!!!!!! ET VIVE LA FRANCE!!

  • And why couldn't she climb down??? For goodness sake, the guys can't do EVERYTHING!!!

  • she should of stayed cause she wouldent of been shot

  • No, she wouldn't have been shot if she had climbed down because they would have got there faster and would have avoided the enemy altogether.

  • Common sense.

  • She jumped because the door to the room they were in was smashed open by the frogs outside and she had to get out of there quickly (go back a listen to it you will hear a smash)

  • ere come the lobsters

  • just add butter
