Horatio is use to his wonderful luck kicking in and he's out of his depth here. I hope it teaches him a lesson. Sometimes you have to stand up to someone whose been put over you. He's a mad man whose thinks that everyone else should die for him and his desires. / Even if Horatio got her out, who would accept them as a couple? Neither side. She goes with him because he's helped her people and that's it. She's not in love with him but goes because he won't go without her. So pathetic.
I thought I was a nice person but when I saw those people carrying that horror of man to the guiteen(sp) I was so happy. I can't take in a person like him who would kill his own people for sport. When he said, "Viva la roi" I knew it had nothing to do with the royalty of France but his own selfish desires. Reminds me of plantation owners. To kill without justice or mercy is a serial killer. Like an animal that has gone mad and you have to put down. This was justice. The baker is revenged.
Funny how she can just call Horatio from her house all casual like the battle going on was just a soccer game. "Horatio you come in here this minute, dinner is on the table!"
It shows how Napoleon Bonaparte excellent planing and timing caught the roaylist off guard almost well till the "Lobsters" found out at the last second.
@solwen Ummm Napoleon was PART of the REVOLUTION yes at this time he wasnt a general but i mean come on look at the tacitcs 18 men to distract the british regulars and then take out the main royalist army what person besides napoleon bonparte could plan this...
@MrVinSoft Nonsense? Napoleon was alive and was in King louis army as a ARTILLERY commander. and as you can see the "Revolutionists" could of put up lines of defenses any but they didnt cause thats typical so Napoleon outsmarted the king louis soilder and Great Britain and then they fell into his trap ware the royalists main force was destroyed before they considered attacking the smaller force. now ask your self this question name one person beside napoleon who could plan such a thing.
@MateusVIII He might of been. but do remember Napoleon outsmarted his opponets. since his spys got the information at the right time for napoleon to counter it and crush it.
@MateusVIII That is True. But still name we one other person who is a frenchmen that used tactics like Napoleon did? cause i mean there was no cannon defenses on the beach. and not to say that what commander would attack the main royalists force with over what 28 cannons he said? and do remember napoleon was an artillery commander. Also what commander confuses the enemy of their postition of ware there attacking cause they were gonna blow the bridge up so the british and french would be stuck.
Though it makes for a good show, no way a Captain in the Britannic Navy is going to lead at the oars. Besides, the dude would pull a muscle in a hurry, throw off the mens' rhythm, and be sore as hell in the morning!
@joshuaskennedy Actually, a lot of officers did that. It encouraged the men. What? You think they sat on their arse all day eating and shouting at the men? Not bloody likely, this isnt the American Navy you know!
@joshuaskennedy sir edward pellew would. he once dove in the Channel during a storm to save a sailor fallen into the sea. he and some other officers like Fisher and Cornwallis were revered by their men because they shared the same hardships
Sincere thanks for uploading the Hornblower series. Many years ago I visited Admirial Lord Nelson's flagship The Victory at Portsmouth. Seeing these ships and the crews in this series makes The Victory more real as a fighting "ship of the line" About 800 men were on board these ships in tiny cramped conditions. A tough and often brutual life. Love the British Navy uniforms they are so smart.
What a glorious death for the marquis...he died for what he believed in. at first i thought he was a royalist cause he wanted to live comfortably but his perseverance that brought him to say "vive le roi" even when faced with absolute certain death suggests he was fighting for an ideal of sorts. I guess he was on the wrong side of history and had strong intentions for an unpopular cause.
@equitemcroce ah, the wonderful "died for what he believed in" line. how is that a virtue? royalists and republicans alike died for what htey believed in. communists and nazis died for what they believed in.
@avalsonline oh, don't get me wrong, I'm no royalist or anything but I am impressed at our human condition to be able to resist and persevere so much...even if it's for a poor cause. In any case, it's not like the french revolution was really that much more moral...it was extremely violent and much was destroyed (not only buildings). Guess where the term "terrorist" finds its roots. The regime of the first french republic of Robespierre was referred to as "La Terreur", but that's a side note.
@Timefliesbye Maybe it's the translation convention...they're both "speaking French", but depicted as speaking English so the actual actress wouldn't need to speak French.
Could be but we both had a taste of Hornblowers French back when the Spanish declared war. I can vouch for it being at best Improvised :).
BUT this is again TV so what are we really arguing about I mean even Aliens speak English or any other language that happens to be used in the country it is broadcasting in..
7:45 the jump was rather funny - she came flying out the window like she was sitting on a chair. Goodness me!
8:00 he was his own worst enemy - just desserts! With people like him running the town no wonder the peasants rebelled. How foolish of him - if he'd been kind like Horatio this would never have happened (:-) The alternative, ie: Napoleon - also an elitist & mass murderer! (Albeit he left great legacies in Science & higher learning, Law, Agricultural trade, Weights & Measures, builds)
they wear casquetts (or a similar cap); they're visored caps made of leather, with perhaps some brass reinforcements. the US artillery wore them in the late 1780's, at least on campaign. elements of the british army did as well.
but yes, cavalry normally recieved them as well-usually light horse. the provosts for general washingon were described as wearing them, as was the light horse of philedelphia..
I'm not a XVIIIth century expert, but I guess this movie is exploiting a lot of clichés that defy historical truth.
I'm not sure every french village had it's own guillotine -_-' There only was some in Paris, or maybe Lyon, big towns where the "Terror" made thousands of victims, innocent or not...
Yes, but I was talking practially. Considering the turmoil in France during this time, plus the big amount of recruits, I wonder if the uniforms really were of that high priority. I've heard that in many regiments, only the jackets and the hats were of a single colour, and the colour of the rest of the uniforms differed from soldier to soldier.
Some of them still wore the royal regimental uniforms, some of them didn't even have shoes but clogs. But the blue-white-red uniforms weren't copies from the American ones, it was rather symbolic : They wore blue-white&red because they were supposed to embody the nation and these colours are the French colours since the Revolution.
you are completely right. Normally I am quite fond of the british and their discipline, but they would support every little uprising or cause if it would be in their benefit.
All governments support causes with similar ideologies. The British did it, the Americans did it, the Soviets did it, the Japanese did it, even the French did it. And as idealistic as the French Revolutition was, it still was marked by the Terror.
History shows that the british were very fond of supporting countries invading the weaker ones, while still staying in diplomatic relations with the country invaded. Thats called backstabbing to the bone.
