Its just the old misconception that any new nerd group on the scene is a bunch of "freaks". All the old nerds who are finally kind of accepted get freaked out by a new subgroup and try to push them away so they can keep their "nerd pride".

The problem with the fursuit fandom is that they only recognize and search out for the good quality fursuits and the famous youtubers who make fursuits; they don't seek out the small youtubers with fursuits almost as good.. D:

I actually don't use a DTD for ones that I make. Mine usually come out fairly loose though :c So you CAN make one without a DTD, but It is ill-fitting, but as such, is not as complicated.

It would also be very hard to get a fursuit maker to not use the DTD, since most want their customers to be happy with the end result.

Depends on how much money you got. If you have a lot of money get a really nice one made. If you don't have a lot of money make your own, it will be better then wasting a small amount of of money on a crappy fursuit someone else made.

Good fursuits (high quality that won't fall apart or break) usually start around $1500 and thats for a full suit, a good partial suit usually starts arund $800 anything cheaper means its not going to be as high quality, you get what you pay for.
