Imagine anyone today wondering how a guest arrived so quickly after his own show ended just a few minutes before. In those days, things were done in real time, and the question Arlene asked Funt was perfectly logical.
This comes from that (in)famous September 1963 episode with the Bell Maker in which Arlene Francis [ side effects alcohol? pain medication reaction? alcohol / meds reaction? aftermath of her May 1963 auto accident] seems ( 3:36 ) flushed. Confused from 4:00 onward?
Notice -- she solved both the bell maker and Funt when he used his own voice. Go girl!
( 4:05 ) cryptic reference to summer vacation they take thanks to reserved videotapes recorded in spring.
It was so long ago. What's my line had no fancy sets, was shot in black and white with cameras not much better than security cameras. What's my line had nothing -- except TALENT.
Wow... this brought back OLD memories. I am sometimes amazed (maybe a bit freaked out) that I can remember watching shows from this time when they were originally aired. I remember watching "What's My Line" on a regular basis. And "Candid Camera." My ... how time has flown by! Now I am finding myself rapidly approaching the realm of those called "elderly" ... It is both awesome and scary ...
REALITY TV- he did it 40 years before it was invented ! aston the PUNK Kutcher is a poor sloppy hack - But he manages to rip off Mr Funt - But without the class & integrity of Candid Camera - God Bless Allen Funt - and I really liked fanny's fried Green Tomatoes-
Thanks for posting this. Arlene is even more cute here than usual and I love how she gives it away that they record some of the shows. I love Dorothy's hair and dress here; very glamorous :)
I would imagine it would refer to the broadcast year , which in those days, faithfully started in September, so that would make it a new season and a new year for WML
as someone else said- Sunday nights were a joy for this redheaded boy with Mr. Ed, Lassie, Ed Sullivan, Candid Camera and WML in the early 1960's on CBS.
Oh yes -- I remember back to back Candid Camera and WML very well. Our family rarely missed them at the time I was quite a little boy. Ed Sullivan 6:00 p.m. Candid Camera 8:00 p.m. WML 8:30 p.m. MST.
I would have been miffed if I were Funt: the title is a trifle insulting. It would be better ALLEN FUNT
Clearly, they didn't have the term "reality show" then.

After Candid Camera was cancelled by CBS, Funt made an X-rated version for a theatrical film called "What Would You Say To A Naked Lady?"

she isnnt blotto or under the influence, it was such a pure form comedy that it cant be reproduced now because of how jaded we are now.

I agree. I see no sign at all of her being at less than her best.

the old candid camera: think of the innocence and good natured quality of that show compared with the harsh, anxiety-making and sour "punked."

"This comes from that (in)famous September 1963 episode"
Are you sure about that Sept. date? Why does John say to Bennett at 5:46 "Bennett hasn't usually been that kind this early in the year."

Allen Funt was the king of TV comedy for the 50's and 60's with Candid Camera. Try and do that today.
