Actually there WERE diesels in 1925, but at the time they were nowhere near as common as steam locomotives. They used diesel locomotives in rocky countries like Switzerland in 1912 already, because filling up water for the boiler was best suited to flat plains. Also the Trans-Australian Railway built 1912-1917 was planned with diesel locomotives in mind, since steam locomotives had to pass the vast desert of the Australian outback.

IT WAS 1925!!! They were probably built for this event! THEY COULD MAKE NEW ONES!!! There weren't diesels yet.
