Just been to see Journey Foreigner and Styx at SEC las week 9th June 2011. Arnel was lead vocals and he was great....I agree that it's.good for the band and the fans if they don't have to rely on one singer. This guy sounds great tho I don't recall him singing last week...I've never seen them live before but if I wasn't already a fan I'd be a convert after last week.
I have posted some videos of myself singing to journey. I would appreciate it if you could visit my channel and I would appreciate any comments. thanks.
i know bands usually keep two voices of the same tenor in case one leaves off. Deen's voice is soft, more of ballad but it was utterly nice and so smooth. let us not compare those of others because they have different vocal qualities but all are quality too.
Journey needs to have Kevin Elson put all the money chanel goodies on Deen's vocal strip on the board and have Crown, DPA or Countryman design a mic just for him when he plays the drums and he would simply outshine Arnel on every song that Schon/Cain let Deen sing. Deen's phrasing, sense of melody, and tone( much cleaner and more nuetral the Arnels) is simply much closer to Perry's and Deen is just beeing Deen and not a kareoke performance.
I would love to hear this performance recorded direct from the mixing console instead of through the PA and then the mic on someones video camera. Deen's performance of faithfully is superior to Arnel and Augeri. Deen simply hits this one out of the park.
wow... I never knew that Journey used two singers at a time. And I never thought Deen Castronovo could sing this good... amazing!
It's really rare to see drumers singing like this while playing drums, specially a song as tough as this one (Roger Taylor from Queen is one of the very few I know, and I'm not sure if he could sing THIS song while playing).
I don't care if Steve Perry is better or not... this guy just rocks.
hahahaha have to laugh at the weegie burd shoutin gone youresell dean glawsgow is the best place for a band to play espcially journey their so respected in scotland gone youresell journey
I tend to agree.. this is upt here with Steve, Hugo from the band Evolution. It's FAN tastic.I was blown away when I first heard it. MUCH better than arnel, there's no comparison!
Deen did a great job singing AND drumming. Where was JSS?? In March '07, he was still lead singer for Journey. Got the boot that June.
Steve Augeri was the best replacement EVER for Steve Perry.
Wish Schon would realize that longtime fans don't WANT a dead-ringer. They DO want someone with both the strong audience connection & sex appeal of Steve Perry.
I can LISTEN to AP, but cannot WATCH him sing. He reminds me of Tattoo (Hervé Villechaize) from Fantasy Island. ;)
He was asked if he wanted to front the band after JSS left but he preferred to be the drummer full time...I don't blame him because is a fantastic drummer...even better than Steve Smith...plus Steve Smith can't sing
Deen is a good singer but not a lead singer.Arnel is a great singer. Steve Perry is the original and should not be comparred to.All the singers like Augeri, and Arnel are great as well. Try singing the vocals like Perry and if you can hit every note just like Perry and sound that good well then you are a bad ass but not many singers can do it . Arnel is not Perry and Augeri was with them for 2 albums and an LP so he kept Journey going and done a hell of a job. Don't down something you can't do.
john he is so much better than arnel's screachy voice, i will take his mellow voice over his anyday. Dean and the other sa should have tag teamed this band and they would have been the best band ever, well maybe not if the could have had sp, but dean and sa would have been great together. SA brings energy to the stadium and dean brings the mystery of being behind the drums....Love yall
idiot, obviously deen doesnt have all the versatility, why do you think they were so desperate to find a new singer, browsing youtube. Search his version of dont stop believing and youll see why he is not the lead singer.
SOULY??????First, you need to learn proper spelling.Secondly, it's NOT a Steve Perry song-Jon Cain wrote it "solely" by himself.get the facts straight. And to all the haters, you all wish you could sing half as good as Arnel or Deen.(Yes, that's how HE spells it)
either post a video of yourself singing it better, or check out "mother father" live version sung by this guy. one of the most difficult journey songs to sing. WHILE DRUMMING as well. so try hitting these notes and drumming at the same time.
Deen is an excellent vocalist. He really bailed them out when Augeri was having vocal problems. He often had to sing along with Augeri or take over singing the higher vocal parts or songs altogether.
Any reason why Deen stayed at the backseat with the drums instaead of frontline with a mike? I mean, just listen to this, Schon could have hired another drummer. Just a thought.
bro i know i couldnt do what he does, sing and play the drums at the same time, i cant imagine how hard that is. What a gifted talented singer and drummer dean is, two thumbs up
lawgirl - I would encourage you to go listen to the rest of Deen's video's... or better yet, do some research. Neil has asked him on many occasions to be the frontman, but Deen won't do it.... believe me, it is the real deal. He is an amazing drummer as well as vocally. In fact, thank God they have Deen as he had to step up for Steve Augeri several times.
Well the dudes got great vocals but come out from behind the drums and do what Steve Perry did. Still no one compares to him. Thats why he was there when they got the star on the walk of fame, they have never been the same since his exit. They tried to find a vocal macth but no one has compared. Steve we miss you brother. wow im impressed finaly found a descent lead singer. There will nvever be another Steve perry but, atliest they found a lead singer that sound pretty gopod. but not a Steve Perry.
what??? he is not lipping, what are you smoking? check out these other songs with Deen singing. search - > Deen Castronovo "Patiently", Deen Castronovo Singing Mother Father
This sounds too good to be true, it sounds too much like Steve Perry and his mouth doesn't seem to be moving in time to the lyrics. Arnel wasn't even this good, if they're trying to fool the audience, they're doing a damned good job because nobody sounds this much like Steve Perry unless Steve Perry himself. Sorry but I need more proof that it's really the drummer.
Arnel is not this good? He's actually better IMO. For me, Perry belongs to the studio, Arnel will school him in a live session. Can you imagine Perry or any ex Journey leads giving a good rendition of Axel Rose or Steven Tyler's songs like Arnel does without breaking a sweat? Heck, even Perry can't even replicate his studio recordings in a live session.
Perry is just as god live as he is in the studio and Journey are touring now because they have to, not because they want to. We're talking about Journey here, and their original sound which is Steve Perry, not about Axel Rose or Steve Tyler. Arnel will never be as good as them either. The only person to replicate studio recordings in a live session is Andrea Bocelli, he's note perfect every time. Just the same live as in the studio, there's no difference.
You are so fucking right! I was just saying that Arnel sounds just like the track! I mean Journey wouldn't be what they are if it wasn't for Perry but Arnel is absolutely amazing. Perry Doesn't sound like the studio session live. I mean we can tell it's him but no where near as good. But Arnel does it without even breaking a sweat.
lawgirl... it's not that I can't clearly see what you are trying to imply, but to give you the benefit of the doubt before I debate you in regards to Deen, I'd like you to explain what it is your thoughts are....
lawgirl2007 - It's Deen singing, I mean c'mon. search out -Deen Castronovo Singing Mother Father & Deen Castronovo "Patiently"
Also Both Deen and Arnel are equally amazing! search - Journey Santiago Arnel. I understand what you are saying about Perry. But realize this - Perry is NOT coming back to this band. If his heart isn't in it anyway, why would you want him too. Arnel is the future.

It's hard to understand Arnel Pineda singing the classic songs especially "faithfully" as: "... SIRKUS LIPE ON-DEER the big TUFF WORD WEE OL' need the clowns to MEEK us smile THRU IS-PEACE and time ALL-WEES another SHOE WANDERING WEIRD I am LOOSE without you And being A FART IN EASY on this LAB AH-PAIR TOO EXCHANGERS learn TOO PALL in LAB AH-GENE I GIT the JOOOY of RIDISCOBERING you Oh GEAR you STEAM by me I'm POR-EBER yours PAYT POOH LEE ..."
This guy can sing, but when people think of Journey they think Perry and what that idiot band did to their money-maker.Did they ever made hit songs after Perry left? None that I remember, who did the remastering? Not Augeri,Schon,Cain! Perry did it because he got a career AFTER Journey..he didn't just play the guitar or the piano-or sing.
I LOVE Dean's voice, and am glad he came back to the music business, he's not Steve, Steve is great, Dean's great. They do what they do, and I am just glad that we're able to hear the songs at anytime. I am impressed!!
I heard Deen sing live in NC and honestly, I"d be hard put to tell you who was better. Deen sang cleaner than Steve when it came to the live stuff. Considering he's playing drums too and managing to keep his tone even, he's beyond incredible
It's like Bing Crosby and White Christmas, Elvin and Blue Suede Shoes, Springsteen and Born in the USA, Mellencamp and Jack & Diane -it's Perry and Faithfully, Open Arms, Don't Stop Believin'. They are his songs forever, no matter who trys to sing them!
In all fairness to this guy, he does so a better job on this song than Augeri did, but the band had to find somebody who sang LIKE PERRY to pull it off-so that says something! It will still always one of Perry's signature songs, no matter who sings it, how good they sing it, or who wrote it!
WOW!!! I seen them last year opening for Def Leppard and Deen sang Who's cryin now Faithfully and Open Arms and he did these SO PERFECT, it was the highlight of the whole night, you could not help but get chills hearing him sing these.
You don't need to be sorry, this is definitely Steve's song, nobody sings it like he does, it is my favorite song of all time and I'm Perry's age, I've heard a lot of songs in my life, but nobody sings it like he does. I'm a faithfull Perry fan forever!
IMO Deen sings Perry under the table live. Perry was a great studio singer, but he made a lot of mistakes live. Deen sounds GREAT here. Awesome job. And he did it sitting down.....not exactly the way singers like to perform.
credit given. but i think people say what they say cuz perry was the original. and most remakes of originals can't top what they are trying to remake. make sense? same as if someone else tried to play the terminator. doesn't work. perry rocks, this guy is good, too. but perry is the original and you can't top that. (ps - it's not about correctly hitting every note as it is on paper...it's about heart)
actually, Jon cain DID write this song, but I think perry helped some in the song writing.
don't quote me on that though.
Jonathan cain did most of it.
But Perry did put himself in the song when he sang it. He had one of the most powerful voices I have ever heard. And Deen isn't too shabby. that guy from "evolution" is horrible when it comes to this.
what is wrong with you people? he hits every note, Perry was great, he also hit a TON of bad notes, sharp, flat all over the place, plus he sang around then Deen hits them all, sitting and playing
Not a bad band at all... is it anywhere near as good as it was when Perry sang? No. Not even close. Perry wrote these songs and sang them with his heart and sang for himself. This guy is singing for a crowd. You can tell the difference.
Perry didn't write this song. Jon Cain did. So your comment is stupid. Deen does a fantastic job of singing this song, and seeing it live was breathtaking. I wasn't lucky enough to see Perry with Journey, but i consider myself very lucky to have seen them 4 times in 2006/07. Augeri was excellent. And JSS was fantastic. I have no complaints.
got let up on any other singer but oPerry....I would loved to have seen em with Perry...but to slate people cos there not perry is not rioght....love to see your version of the song if you sang it
got an idea supreme, grab a set of drums, and try to do what he just did. This is a trip, didn't know the guy could sing. even though, steve was not in the original line-up, still miss him, but this dude's performance of this song was awesome, i think.
Its not the same without Perry....its just not the same. The true meaning of the song was portrayed by the way he sang that song......this isnt the same.
Wow! I was a fan of Deen for his drumming. Now I'm a fan for his singing. I'd definitely pay to see them with him as the front man! I saw the other videos with him at the pipes. Incredible!!!
this was the best night of my life!! i have been a journey fan all my life!! this concert will never be beaten!!! and btw all those hu slag journey can fuck off!! they are amazin!! wen u sell as many cds as them then u can talk but until then dont!!
Am I going crazy or is this guy really doin it? Playin drums and singin like that?! Naaah that's impossible! If he could sing like that why wouldn't he sing in his own band?! He's better than Augeri jeez! Anyway I love all of them Journey guys!
well...I'm stunned...Deen is a way better singer than Augeri..anyone who can hit the high notes on Faithfully should be commended..Augeri couldn't do it. Faithfully is one of Journey's best songs...I am a fan all over again seeing this post...by the way this is the best Journey post in a long time..great crowd shots!
the way Deen hit those high notes in the end is unbelievable. As much as I love steve perry I dont know if his voice is able to do that anymore. I would take deen instead of Augeri or soto anyday.
he got out of the band in July of 2006. On july 4, deen had to take over for the night half way through the concert, because augeri had throat problems
bloody BRILLIANT

This sounds too good to be true, it sounds too much like Steve Perry and his mouth doesn't seem to be moving in time to the lyrics. Arnel wasn't even this good, if they're trying to fool the audience, they're doing a damned good job because nobody sounds this much like Steve Perry unless Steve Perry himself. Sorry but I need more proof that it's really the drummer.
lawgirl2007 4 years ago
Arnel is not this good? He's actually better IMO. For me, Perry belongs to the studio, Arnel will school him in a live session. Can you imagine Perry or any ex Journey leads giving a good rendition of Axel Rose or Steven Tyler's songs like Arnel does without breaking a sweat? Heck, even Perry can't even replicate his studio recordings in a live session.
shaider77 4 years ago 4
Perry is just as god live as he is in the studio and Journey are touring now because they have to, not because they want to. We're talking about Journey here, and their original sound which is Steve Perry, not about Axel Rose or Steve Tyler. Arnel will never be as good as them either. The only person to replicate studio recordings in a live session is Andrea Bocelli, he's note perfect every time. Just the same live as in the studio, there's no difference.
lawgirl2007 4 years ago
its true...lol
abhing1 4 years ago
You are so fucking right! I was just saying that Arnel sounds just like the track! I mean Journey wouldn't be what they are if it wasn't for Perry but Arnel is absolutely amazing. Perry Doesn't sound like the studio session live. I mean we can tell it's him but no where near as good. But Arnel does it without even breaking a sweat.
Brittany0414 4 years ago
lawgirl... it's not that I can't clearly see what you are trying to imply, but to give you the benefit of the doubt before I debate you in regards to Deen, I'd like you to explain what it is your thoughts are....
Thoughtsofseptember 4 years ago
lawgirl2007 - It's Deen singing, I mean c'mon. search out -Deen Castronovo Singing Mother Father & Deen Castronovo "Patiently"
Also Both Deen and Arnel are equally amazing! search - Journey Santiago Arnel. I understand what you are saying about Perry. But realize this - Perry is NOT coming back to this band. If his heart isn't in it anyway, why would you want him too. Arnel is the future.

Steve Perry is the greatest! Augeri was o.k. Soto only stayed with Journey for few months.
Now this new frontman from the Philippines ..... this one is kinda etchy. Filipinos are notorious of getting confused with letter F and P.
kinda scary when the new frontman, or should i say prontman sings ".... I'm POR EBER yours, PAYT POOH LEE ....."
paytpoohlee 4 years ago
Another attempt to get a "sound like Perry" singer! Can't they come up with any new songs and quit trying to hang on Perry's coat tails!

this song is incredible anywhere. sung by either steve or this guy.
powermetal91 4 years ago
This guy can sing, but when people think of Journey they think Perry and what that idiot band did to their money-maker.Did they ever made hit songs after Perry left? None that I remember, who did the remastering? Not Augeri,Schon,Cain! Perry did it because he got a career AFTER Journey..he didn't just play the guitar or the piano-or sing.

I LOVE Dean's voice, and am glad he came back to the music business, he's not Steve, Steve is great, Dean's great. They do what they do, and I am just glad that we're able to hear the songs at anytime. I am impressed!!

Deen is one talented guy.
cliffburt785 4 years ago
I heard Deen sing live in NC and honestly, I"d be hard put to tell you who was better. Deen sang cleaner than Steve when it came to the live stuff. Considering he's playing drums too and managing to keep his tone even, he's beyond incredible
VicJAyala 4 years ago
It's like Bing Crosby and White Christmas, Elvin and Blue Suede Shoes, Springsteen and Born in the USA, Mellencamp and Jack & Diane -it's Perry and Faithfully, Open Arms, Don't Stop Believin'. They are his songs forever, no matter who trys to sing them!
imaperryfan03 4 years ago
Even though most of the writing was done by everyone else
VicJAyala 4 years ago
In all fairness to this guy, he does so a better job on this song than Augeri did, but the band had to find somebody who sang LIKE PERRY to pull it off-so that says something! It will still always one of Perry's signature songs, no matter who sings it, how good they sing it, or who wrote it!
00justaperryfan00 4 years ago
I couldn't agree more. But Deen does a beautiful job.
Beautiful tribute to Steve Perry...and to Journey. He compliments the group nicely.
DAsTop40 4 years ago
WOW!!! I seen them last year opening for Def Leppard and Deen sang Who's cryin now Faithfully and Open Arms and he did these SO PERFECT, it was the highlight of the whole night, you could not help but get chills hearing him sing these.
ace7271 4 years ago
im sorry but steve perry sends chills up my spine when he sings it
anonabee84 4 years ago
You don't need to be sorry, this is definitely Steve's song, nobody sings it like he does, it is my favorite song of all time and I'm Perry's age, I've heard a lot of songs in my life, but nobody sings it like he does. I'm a faithfull Perry fan forever!
thevoiceforever22 4 years ago
IMO Deen sings Perry under the table live. Perry was a great studio singer, but he made a lot of mistakes live. Deen sounds GREAT here. Awesome job. And he did it sitting down.....not exactly the way singers like to perform.
maybelooking 4 years ago
I agree w/ you twinklinglicin
(i hope i spelled that correctly)
You can tell the difference sometimes b/w this guy and perry b/c perry put his whole voice it felt like into the song.
Im not saying this guy is bad, (i mean he does have to sing over a drum set, which can't be easy)
lizzy314 4 years ago
I WISH I COULD SING LIKE THAT!
dondeestasquenoteveo 4 years ago
credit given. but i think people say what they say cuz perry was the original. and most remakes of originals can't top what they are trying to remake. make sense? same as if someone else tried to play the terminator. doesn't work. perry rocks, this guy is good, too. but perry is the original and you can't top that. (ps - it's not about correctly hitting every note as it is on paper...it's about heart)
twinklinglicin 4 years ago
actually, Jon cain DID write this song, but I think perry helped some in the song writing.
don't quote me on that though.
Jonathan cain did most of it.
But Perry did put himself in the song when he sang it. He had one of the most powerful voices I have ever heard. And Deen isn't too shabby. that guy from "evolution" is horrible when it comes to this.
lizzy314 4 years ago
what is wrong with you people? he hits every note, Perry was great, he also hit a TON of bad notes, sharp, flat all over the place, plus he sang around then Deen hits them all, sitting and playing
randmania 4 years ago
Not a bad band at all... is it anywhere near as good as it was when Perry sang? No. Not even close. Perry wrote these songs and sang them with his heart and sang for himself. This guy is singing for a crowd. You can tell the difference.
IanJamesMullins 4 years ago
Perry didn't write this song. Jon Cain did. So your comment is stupid. Deen does a fantastic job of singing this song, and seeing it live was breathtaking. I wasn't lucky enough to see Perry with Journey, but i consider myself very lucky to have seen them 4 times in 2006/07. Augeri was excellent. And JSS was fantastic. I have no complaints.

got an idea supreme, grab a set of drums, and try to do what he just did. This is a trip, didn't know the guy could sing. even though, steve was not in the original line-up, still miss him, but this dude's performance of this song was awesome, i think.
Suuperman5461 4 years ago 2
anyone who could do a good version of a song originally sung by perry deserves respect. Even more if that one is playing drums.
CAstronovo is extraordinaire.

man, have you ever tried to sing like that and play drums..... its extremly hard, give the guy some credit

Please....the singer is playing drums too...LOL Perry put his heart and soul into singing a soul that this dude butchered.

Its not the same without Perry....its just not the same. The true meaning of the song was portrayed by the way he sang that song......this isnt the same.

Am I going crazy or is this guy really doin it? Playin drums and singin like that?! Naaah that's impossible! If he could sing like that why wouldn't he sing in his own band?! He's better than Augeri jeez! Anyway I love all of them Journey guys!
One of the best bands ever!

well...I'm stunned...Deen is a way better singer than Augeri..anyone who can hit the high notes on Faithfully should be commended..Augeri couldn't do it.
