Definitely the best version of this aria and I'll tell you why: she floats those High As like nothing. Any soprano who's attempted this aria will agree with me: those As can kick your ass.
yes her interpretation is the best ive heard on youtube so far. mainly because the character is pleading and the high A's at the end of the piece are the climax of the all those pleadings and she keeps it mezzo-piano at most, to truly show the sadness and sense of emergency that the character feels...most singers just attack those A's when really it just need to be touched like Barbara sang it..

What elevates Bonney over others, at least to my American ear, is the pure sincerity in her voice. That is something you will not hear from Maria Callas.
yes, barbara does have that purity - she keeps the sound spinning frontally so it doesn't get swallowed in that plum sound of the soft palate, she really keeps it shining. a wonderful wonderful singer, to my mind, really one of the greatest.

swanningaround, you are absolutely right!! I think, in Barbara Bonney the great Renata Tebaldi has found a worthy successor in our generation. For most sopranos, even the famous ones, it is very difficult not to develop a harsh and shrill voice in the high notes. This voice is truly angelic!
MIss Bonney, you truly have the most versatile and beautiful voice of our times. Every time I hear one of your songs I feel sorry for not being able to somehow repay you for all the joy that you bring. Thank you for your work and passion.
I love Barbara's voice. She has such purity. I don't know why Americans hype up the likes of Callas and Fleming so much. To my mind, Barbara has a purity of voice like few others. I think Deanna Durbin had the same qualities too. Am I missing something?
@swanningaround I mean, Barbara is great at what she does... but she lacks the voice that has the weight or size to sing dramatic grand opera. Callas was perfect for these roles so she sang them. I think the roles Callas sang were all just so iconic to opera that she became extremely popular. Plus, she was an amazing performer and expressive singer.
jfbecks. Fair enough. Possibly I am a little biased. I tend to prefer the quiet reflective arias such as the one here rather than some of the "grand opera", shall we say, "louder" ones. I guess I am getting a little older and have less energy. :)
I don't understand either, for Callas, maybe it's the Diva thing, it makes a good story. I don't get the hype about Fleming either. I think it also has something to do with repertoire, I'm feeling Americans aren't that big on Mozart or Handel's operas. They prefer Puccini and Verdi.
@uptilthesky Yes. That must be it. I have never understood Americans. They have had great people like Sousa and Bernstein, but seem to lionise others who the rest of us in the world think as nobodies - like Mariah Carey, for example. I do like Lucia Popp's voice also - she has the same sort of quality as Barbara. To me, Barbara and Lucia are more attractive looking than Callas and Fleming also.
@swanningaround Fleming is a full lyric soprano.... Bonney is a light lyric soprano. A different type of voice and range :-) Deanna Durbin was a film star born in the 1920's so yes, you are missing something. It's called a discerning ear...
@swanningaround they can't be compared because they have different voice types which are meant to be singing different styles, Barbara Bonney has a lighter voice, while Callas was a dramatic soprano.
@swanningaround Americans are obsessed with their dark color. You are right, Barbara's voice is beautifully pure and clear. But, just like cultures of the past, American culture likes to idolize a certain type of voice. This makes it difficult for young singers because they don't always hear the singers whose sound is similar to theirs, and so they think of the wrong impression about all opera, because voices are so very different. They end up only hearing the idolized voice types.
@mwdot12 Hopefully younger American sopranos will get to travel around a bit or study to places like Vienna. Of course there are people with expertise from all over the world in the US - so you really don't have to travel much. It is of course more difficult to learn in the correct way - which means avoiding American Idol and such shows. It does pay in the long run though.
@swanningaround NO... You are Intelligent,,, and her voice is PRISTINE.. Such SNOBBERY among Opera fanatics.. PARDON me do you have any grey Poupon that I can POOP ON. LOL....
I love her voice too.. I am an AMERIKAN.. Must be stewpud ur summpin...
Push up bra, sexy pose. She's always looked as pure & ethereal as her perfect Mozartian tones. So I think it is hilarious that there is a host of male comments (with their tongues hanging out no doubt..) Not improper - what's the point of a lowcut knockout gown otherwise. But still, it made me laugh. Too bad they don't have something comparable for us ladies. Open chest tux, super thin reeeally tight pants. For a very young Carreras, Corelli, Domingo
The best I've ever heard this sung was in college by a girl named Amy Brantley. (Amy, if you're reading this, you were perfection) I accompanied her on it...I can still hear her voice in my head...still wears me out. I also have a soft spot for Te Kanawa on this aria.
she cancelled all her concert schedule and singing engagements about 2-3 years ago without promising when to resume. but last time i checked in Jan 2009, she's back on the stage, mostly holding recitals in European cities. hopefully she'll come to the midwest someday!
I think Natalie has a little more "shimmer" to her voice, and she also resonates from her nose, whereas Bonney seems to have more depth to her voice. Although to be fair, I don't think they are the same voice category (although they might be with Dessay's repertory excursions...)
i liked this one. and possibly due to a good match between the soprano and the music style.
