  • For Freyja..the Original as it was about to be released in uk

I was a boy in London on business then. the fast inter-riffs are as it was played.

    Yes..

  • This is real music

  • un tema para toda la vida //

  • I did a poo when I heard this song, it was that powerful.

  • @wjsrobe ha!

  • Classic :-)

  • You can always tell how good a band is when they play live and it sound just as good, if not better than the album. No guitar pick for Mark K! How tough are those fingers?!!

  • Always amazes me how this version gets overlooked. Relatively speaking that is, there's another live Sultans with 12,000,000 hits. But I haven't seen a better live version than this. Tight.

  • i remember seeing this on the tv and followong them on tour for a while

  • Needless to say all fantastic!!! Personally I like to see more of the rhythmn guitarist tho!

  • yeah Hooverdarnit..I know what you are saying Dude, for me it was a particularly nice cup of tea with a mean digestive biscuit at the motor way services just north of Birmingham..crazy times man, crazy

  • Great to hear them again when they were still 'raw'. No keyboards and no guitar effects just straight through the amp. Rhythm guitar playing a bit ropey from knoflers young brother but Mark is showing some of the genius he was going to be (and bad hair!).

  • He's not allowed to sing and play lead guitar at the same time! Genius.

Rhythm guitar on this version is awful - like Status Quo.

  • When I first heard this way back then I thought they were a Dutch band entering the British charts!!! the way Mark sings it...funny how they caught on first in Europe b4 they made it big over here! Brilliant...still have all their LP,s and yes its true..CD came along and everybody bought Brothers in Arms for their new CD collection!! Love & Peace. Beetlejon

  • Really loved it when Sting, Mark, Phil collins, Eric Clapton all played on one stage they certainly all made that concert rock

  • Mark Knopfler is a very talented individual...very

  • one of my all-time favorite rock performances

  • When i was in my 70s 80s metal thing i thought these guys sucked now that ive grown i can appreciate just how great mark knopfler is .

  • How could 21 people dislike this?!!! :o The quality's not perfect, but Knopfler is amazing!

  • i'm 23 and this is my favorite music,i love dire straits ,brazil

  • im 23 and this is a of favorite music. i love dire straits, brazil

  • love this mans techinique so crisp and unique 2 fingers and the thumb is what its all about

  • bad hair great skill

  • Fuck everything else!! THIS gives me a chubb on! ;)

  • THIS is real music........... justin bieber do me a favor and kill yourself

  • I'm 12 and this is 1 of my favorite songs!!

  • @feederfan1998 keep going sir !

  • Comment removed

  • it's a shame Mark Knopfler is never mentioned with the guitar greats.

  • smack my arse and call me mother, that was good, real good shit. Top quality stuff.

  • ...and I am 49 and still here, by luck from Mother Earth...

  • good shit

  • cool as

  • Thank God rhythm is not all Mark Knopfler wanted to play. Fantastic song and playing.

  • priceless face 3:01 - 3:03

  • You can't sell me Radiohead when i've seen this.

  • Could switching to Geico really save you 15% or more on Car Insurance?...

...Does Mark Knopfler cause orgasms with his guitar playing?

  • i wouldnt regard myself as a Dire Straits fan but this is cooking!!!

  • Words can't describe how happy I am each and every time I discover a live version of Dire Straits. It's like winning a big prize from a scratch-off lottery ticket, but much worthier. I love almost every live version of Sultans, They're all so different, all superb in their own way. This earlier version is definitely a precious gem. To me Mark Knopfler is simply incomparable. I admit I am hopelessly besotted with this amazing man ever since the first time I watched his/DS's live performance.

  • I have seen the ridiculous comments on this video, and if anyone realised how difficult it is to play the guitar to this standard live i might add they would give Mark Knopfler the recognition he deserves. This performance puts him in the all time top ten of greatest ever guitar players. The notes he strikes to almost perfection with one or two minor mistakes. An absolute sterling performace, and i have to admit this is the best the song ever sounded in my opinion.

  • What a great front man Mark knopler was. The music still sounds great today.

  • ONE M0:00RE TIME... MK the guitar God

  • I love to hear the never ending bitching about the currrent state of music. Not one of you ever go to rock shows in your town. Not "stadium" shows, a real rock show, in a "ROCK CLUB". Go out, enjoy your town, eat a decent dinner (not Fridays), and hang out with the kids for a night and bring some earplugs, maybe take a cab too. Don't expect the record companies, and radio stations (corporate America!) to tell you what is good. They will only tell you about what they can sell the most of.

  • Always used to annoy me as a young lad that the camera pulls away from the lead guitar player just as he makes his "thing" - really frustrating when you are trying to learn guitar :)

  • Oh my, Mark was so young back then.

  • Songs brings one back to a time and place. For me this song brings me back to 1979. I was sitting in a county jail for possessing some wild, ditch weed hemp I found along side of interstate 80 in Nebraska.

  • @Hooverdarnit Oh yeah. '79. Sat in a room of a big old house that was condemned for demolition -I was the last tenant and the smoke made little waves in the sunlight while this played. Lions works for me too. Some things, you just don't forget.

  • @Hooverdarnit how strange.. this happened to me last night.. what are the odds!?

  • 1978 was a great year for music..Not like the crap that's out there today. I'm grateful to be a product of the 70's..

  • The band around Mark Knopfler went from a seriously promising début , then as continously growing creative renwer of all that had been before, to the exceptional high standard Dire Straits we all remember! Thanks to his golden fingers and brilliant composing. Today nothing of that talent has changed , still with Knopfler all is different again.

  • Fuck Vevo

  • His guitar sounds bad here.

  • @MikesMusic475 I'd attribute that to the old recording. You can notice the video quality fading out at some points too. Broadcasting wasn't 100% HD back then. Still an epic song by a band that "musicians" now and days should take notes from.

  • Mark Knopfler don't need no pick

  • Comment removed

  • @TheIntolerantAtheist unusual comment ... watch some more justin bieber and maybe you'll appreciate these guys ... this performance is pure money

  • Damn them Bits sure knew how to take american blues and kick it up a notch

  • 5 bands that need to be in the rock n roll hall of fame:

    1. Rush

    2. Deep Purple

    3. Kiss

    4. Dire Straits

    5. Judas Priest

    do it....

  • @miiwii93 No doubt....It took till 2006 for Skynyrd to get in...(cuz they were associated with a confederate flag)

  • Absolute classic.

  • As I live abroad my country I don't see my dad often, and a few days ago when I met my dad and we were talking like two old friends on tv came up this song, as me and my dad have linstened to it since I was a child, was like a bless, made our day, these simple coincidences make our life be sometimes wonderful. :)

  • oh man what a band .

  • proper band, proper music, no crap, oh sorry i mean rap.

  • is it just me that think that Mark at this age looks a bit like Chris Martin from Coldplay? =)

  • @MassaDayLewis looks like him .no other resemblence tho

  • Cool...its 2;15am and the neighbor just called and asked me to turn it down.

    Wheres that replay tab...

  • Mark Knopfler is a god at the guitar. It is a orgasm for the ears.

  • Essa é a banda. Essa é a música. Tornaram o mundo melhor.

  • @mcouto2009 So Underrated even today.

  • It is my (age 47) good fortune, that my daughter (age 19), has picked up on the good music I was listening to when I grew up. Hardly comes any better then this from Dire Straits!

  • surely this is what music is supposed to be about !!

  • Mark e' la migliore chitarra del rock. Lunga vita ai Dire Straits, la band che ha tradotto in musica le emozioni. Dopo 33 anni ancora imbattuti. Grandi!

  • What a legend! I saw mark knopfler live at the royal albert hall in 2010, 32 years after this performance, and he still hasn't lost it. This man deserves to be knighted!!

  • another 1 of th bands tht came out of th 76/77 m usic explosion! bitchinly cool!

  • Check PICK WITHERS' FACEBOOK PAGE FOR DETAIL OF HIS UPCOMING GIGS WITH NEW BAND, PICK 'N MIX

  • Hi, this is Pick Withers' wife, Linda. Not to be missed if you can get to Birkenhead! Go to Pick's facebook page for more details.

  • Mark Knopler is a freakin maniac. I had no idea he was so talented! Damn!

  • @zonie9872 Seems he doesn't either. Even now he seems to have no idea how good he is. Damn.

  • This is original-no air -brushing here -just pure talent. 100%

  • good to see the man full of spunk and vinegar,

rocking away to his own guitar, far better then the sad old geezer in the suit chumming up to that other sad old geezer Eric

  • shit Knopfler can play - one of the all time greats!!

  • i hate Alchemy version.. the original Sultans of Swing is better.

  • @greyskull979 CHECK PICK WITHERS NEW FACEBOOK PAGE FOR FORTHCOMING GIGS WITH HIS NEW BAND, PICK 'N MIX

  • anyone know what shade of red marks strat is ,fiesta? dakota? hot rod? maybe

  • @spudgun05 its hot rod red the colour. claptons has a torino red. check out fenders website for artist strats.

  • I love it a lot!

  • 2:31 - 3:15 is magic

  • I listened to many bands yesterday. This track was in my head all night..... the most underestimated guitar gods ever.

  • I remember this album/song had just came out when i was in the Navy..

  • Wow, haven't listened to this song for years and I'd forgotten how brilliant it is. I agree with a lot of the comments below. Where is the music today that can hold a candle to this.

  • @aaaadie I appreciate what you and other people are saying but to a certain extent i think that it's all a bad case of nostalgia. There is so much good music around if you know where to look for it, the only difference is sadly it doesn't join the commercial shit that gets bunged in the charts... Or should i say the sharts?

  • The Old Grey Whistle Test - the absolute Nirvana of Forums for musical talent! Will never come again. I watched, loved, anticipated, inhaled every episode until the series was killed stone dead by Soft fuckin' Cell (with a reel to reel actually on stage with them!) Fuck Marc Almond and his Ilk - they crucified the best platform for musical innovation that the BBC ever created!

  • back in the days when the people wrote their own music and actually knew how to play their instruments. I am against stealing, but it is hard to feel sorry for the record companies when people download music. Most of the 'artists' who get their music downloaded aren't artists at all.

  • Classic song!

And aye, I agree with everyone stating how music is a dying art... One of the best things in life is in the infinite possibilities that surrounds music. It's incredibly tragic that these days it's the most musically devoid that are considered the 'best' music, merely because people are seemingly too lazy to attempt to comprehend anything more complex than someone singing over monotomous beats and oversimplified, recycled and catchy tunes. Give credit where credit is due...

  • i agree with comments. I used to sneak out of bed to watch o g w t tv turned down low. was never caught .

  • Wicked Slick Stuff!

  • Guitar hero !!!

  • Thanks a million for posting! Excellent footage!!

  • eu amo essa musica do dire straits, esse cara toca de mais guitarra ,está marcado pra sempre na história.

  • he keeps it going ...

  • bravo

  • Is he the best guitarist ever !?! I don't know but certainly sounds good.

  • @peteselwin No. Not by a country mile.

  • Is he the best guitarist ever !?!I don't know but he certainly sounds good.

  • Fookin Magic!!!!!!!

  • Jaekwonthethief@ ur retarted dude

  • No strat I do play guitar and I don't get the implication... Am I supposed to think that knopfler is a hack or something cuz I find his finesse to be remarkable. Don't be a hater just for the sake of bein a hater I will melt your face

  • Mark knopfler is the most underrated guitarist in musical history. If anyone can watch this video and not think he goes toe to toe with page, Vaughn, beck, Hendrix, Alvin lee etc. They are complete morons the Knopf is the effin man and guitar students everywhere should be forced to learn every chord, fill, and the solo. Absolute genius.

  • @jaekwonthechef You don't play guitar do you!

  • @stratmentalist I do play guitar douche and I resent the fact that you decided to question my post without the courtesy of explaining yourself what am I supposed to say mark knopfler is not awesome? Not gonna do it go listen to nickelback or something if you can't appreciate good music

  • @jaekwonthechef Douche???. You are wrong to say that Knopfler is underrated and even more wrong to say he's the most underrated in musical history.

I also like him very much but he isn't the virtuoso you make him out to be.

He's also managed to personalise his sound too which makes his guitar palying instantly recognisable and attributable to him. He made his mark with sultans but he's never bettered it and certainly not been as groundbreaking or seminal as Hendrix. Finally, get some manners

  • @stratmentalist Ok let's take it down a notch I apologize for getting so defensive but obviously this is more about a difference of opinions instead of you just being condescending which is how I took your initial response. I am 25 yrs old and because of that I happen to think that knopfler is underrated simply because there are probably a very select few people in my generation who even know who he is and he's an extremely talented player furthermore comparing any of the greats is always.....

  • @stratmentalist ..... Going to be like comparing apples to oranges because they all have different styles. Gilmour plays totally different than buddy guy and buddy plays totally different than slash we could argue all day neither of us would be right agree to disagree

  • @jaekwonthechef Too true, they all make a contribution and the variety is essential otherwise we'd all lose interest. Guitar playing isn't a competition though, the better players appreciate everyones style and use this to form their own and keep the good stuff coming. Apologies for overlooking your age when I commented, you weren't born when I saw this first time round in '78. If it has the same impact on your generation then it's certainly stood the test of time.

  • I never ever get bored of listening to this track....superb timeless quality, it makes the hairs on my arms stick up......however, if you rate this track then check out "Green Grass and High Tides" by the Outlaws which predates this by about three years.....if you've not heard it before, only go for the studio version first because you won't be able to handle the live version.....I know people always bang on and say "yeah blah blah check this out" etc etc but do yourself a favour....check it out

  • he looks like Seinfeld

  • crap born to late and missed teh boat

  • died and gone to heaven

  • word stuck so good togather

  • I'm enjoying this version. Other live versions go on with never ending solos and other ad libs that stray from the masterpiece which this song is in its original form. Why mess with perfection? This is great.

@ceporrono - Tienes toda la razón con ambos puntos.

  • Who can hate his video it amazing.

  • Awesome

  • better than Bieber

Rate up if you agree plz :D

  • I've buy the first lp of dire straits in carnaby street 1978. Good memories

  • There should be a guitar class in music schools dedicated to learning this song. PURE GUITAR GENIOUS.

  • Una de las mejores canciones jamás escritas. No me cando de escucharla desde hace ya 26 años y no creo que lo haga nunca. Tunnel of love es otra maravilla.

  • 04:33 did mark lose a string??

(p.s. it "lose" or "loose" in this case? Thank you)

  • @stefo213 no.

  • @stefo213 It's lose :-)

Loose is when your belt isn't done up enough..

  • I just love the drums at 3:22 !

    This song rocks!!!!!

  • THIS IS A WORK OF ART....DIRE STRAITS DID IT....NO ONE WILL EVER DO A SULTAN SWING EVEN REMOTELY CLOSE TO THIS ORGINAL AND SOOOOOO COOL RECORD.

  • the guitarist and the group number one in the world!!!!!!!!

    are amazing!!!!!!

  • Fascinante!!!!!

  • Grew up in N of England in the 70s watching OGWT for my musical "education".

Would pay good money these days just to see a cable channel with the same level of innovative and inspiring music. Has the time just passed?

Dire Straits, Joy Division, Talking Heads, Police, Clash - all about the same time.

  • @ntrlmass . Wise words ! The Killers do a great version of "Romeo And Juliet" ! They won a new fan ! Check out the "Live From Abbey Road" version. They say some cool stuff about DS ! Peace Ye`all !

  • @ntrlmass I love the dream.... Sadly it's not going to happen unless I winn the Lotto!

  • @ntrlmass what a good point! It would be sick to have some *decent* music shows around, shame theres a lot more commercial success to be made out of music videos these days which are generally crap in comparison!

  • @ntrlmass envy envy envy - I've found so many incredible vids on YT from OGWT. - have to go to Amazon to see if there's any such thing as a OGWT compilation dvd or two

  • @ntrlmass Later...with Jools Holland is the only one that comes to mind

  • Buen ritmo para ir por la carretera

  • Mark Knophler is a bad ass player...he is so damn good at guitar

  • Saw it first time - it was stunning then, and still is. OGTW was a great show. Saw 'Paradise by the Dashboard Light' on it for the first time...

  • God bless the OGWT. You felt like one of a privileged few to be aware of these bands when they made their early appearances. I particularly remember Dire Straits and Focus knocking me out. Plus it was live...live....LIVE. Brilliant, Thanks for a great vid.

  • @217jmw YOU SURE HAVE BEEN DISLIKED! GOOD DAY TO YOU PESANT

  • Vocẽs não sentem vontade de dançar?

  • YES!!!!! ROCK!!!!!!!

  • Tight ass sheeat!

  • 25 de julio en Cordoba ver a Knofler es lo mas grande

  • ppl u have to understand that we are not all alike. Noone of us can tell what´s good or bad, wrong or right. But IMO this is a very good song, and artist alike, but also I don´t see nay problem with MM etc. or Chet Atking etc.

Stop arguing, you all can be above that.

  • tune

  • I love this music it was way be4 my time but i grew up listening to great artist like this my whole life.... My parents were music lovers and they passed it on to me!! :D

  • @rswildwoman Dont forget to pass it on to your young'ns I think thats the key.

  • why do british musicians sing with american accents?

  • how can anyone dislike this ? :O

  • <3 solo at the end

  • I love how this melody is a total contradiction to what they are singing about. Swing, Dixieland, Honky Tonk, etc. Genius. That's Dire Straits, COOL and SMOOTH.

  • This isn't on the OGWT DVDs that were released. Stupid BBC "Definitive Edition"!

  • Unfortunately they went samey samey after this album.

Great great album tho, I wore out several copies.

  • no arguement from me flood. i can't think of a better one...

  • The sound here is just fantastic. This just might be the greatest rock tune in the past 35 years.

  • Sooooooooooooo timeless.

  • Saw them perform so many years ago at the 76 Club in Burton on Trent, long before they broke through with Sultans and then on to greatness. It was a great gig as i recall, followed by the Sex Pistols the week after and I got gobbed on!

  • deplete isn't the proper term i meant deterioration but still. even first data used magnetic if I remember correctly. When I was a kid in the 70s we had an open reel from the 60s in our audio visual class. Some of the class projects a few years earlier were already warn down. but then again we reused the reels because of costs.

  • Would have been nice if these tv shows were filmed in high quality 35mm. think about how great they would look on blueray. But we have to look at one of the greatest Musical generations on crappy old video. :(

  • @MrChameleon2010 They were on analogue VT of course, but YouTube and VHS recordings don't do the original quality justice. The BBC do broadcast old Whistletest gigs from time to time, and the image quality really is stunningly good. Of course you cant just create lines that aren't there, but the camera optics and recording bandwidth is still better than most digital broadcast streams.

  • @Zadster That's true but even their analogue magnetic recordings will deplete over time. But so does film if it's not stored properly.

  • Long time ago

    GREAT posting 5*****

    Claude

  • This is real.....Creole....LOL

  • 1970,s gold and still sounds great today- magical post

  • awesomeeeeeeeeeeeeee

  • I just love that red Strat. Wow, one of the best performances I have ever seen.

  • You would have thought his technique (left hand thumb hanging so far over the neck etc) would have been a hindrance. He looks to use his right hand ring finger simply to hold position for the thumb and first two fingers to do the business.
