  • Ok, resume: an old, fat man on his car meets a pretty girl and he thinks she's a whore. He offers a ride to her an she accepts. The old man, once upon the car, tries to touch her, but she slaps his hand. Tells him to give her his ring, if he wants to touch her. He gives it. She takes the ring and hugs the man, gives him a little kiss, then goes. Believe me, this is not italian, except for signorina...

  • first line "a pretty girl and a gay old man" xD wtf!!!

  • one of the greatest performers of all time

  • i want to translate the lyrics ! haha and omg one of my heros ! <3

  • Love love love love

  • i was told by my film analisys teacher that this was chaplin's 1st sound film and that he wasn't very happy about movies going to have sound and people talking so this is the only part where he "talks" in the whole film but he is not actually making any sense, he's not speaking any language in particular, just random words or invented words. :)

  • wish i spoke french!

  • @Corkoth55 he's not actually speaking in any language in this part where he sings ;) i think as this was his 1st sound film, he was trying to make a joke about sound movies)

  • @dieruski what do you mean "he's not speaking any language"??

  • @Corkoth55

this is not french my friend...

  • @DISRUPTOR40 someone already told me that. thank you. move on.

  • @Corkoth55

It is an invented language. Perhaps a mixture of what Chaplin himself, would hear from other immigrants from Italy among other countries..

  • What the hell??? No HD??

  • I have the highest respect for Charles Chaplin. He is one man who had a strong will and spirit in such an age of change. We need more people like him nowdays.

  • @Foiiiii1 I'm just a great chaplin fan.Genius.!!!

  • i love Charlie chaplin ever since i was 6 and i sitll watch all his skits. A true comical genius! Love the dancing... LMAO!

  • He's seriously halarious, when I sad this at school, I laughed my ass off, the way he moves, the was he sings, but when I heard it in the movie I was like... omg this is actually a famous song, I've heard it before but I didn't know whose song it was, when I heard it and I reconized it, that was just an awesome moment xD

  • 'a pretty girl and a gay old man'

    L-O-L

  • it looked like he was doing a forwards moon walk haha

  • We need more of this today! And I'm 17! They had geniuses in the movies then!

  • This is a great scene I loved it's funny

  • I love this scene lmao classic

  • This girl's a real beauty.

  • wow! and wow again! this never gets old!

  • 5 people are gay old men

  • I respect charlie chaplin so much just simply because he deserves all the respect he can get and he's a genuin genius and hilarious. I wish they'd make movies like these ones that dont revolve around sexual entertainment im not dissing the love films but it would be good not go right into detail of how the sex went on.... i know i cant express my words but im sure you can grasp what im saying.

  • This song is an original composed & written by Charlie Chaplin. It is just a jumble of invented words that sound French and Italian:

Se bella piu satore, je notre so catore,

Je notre qui cavore, je la qu’, la qui, la quai!

Le spinash or le busho, cigaretto toto bello,

Ce rakish spagoletto, si la tu, la tu, la tua!

    Senora pelefima, voulez-vous le taximeter,

La zionta sur le tita, tu le tu le tu le wa!

Modern Times was the last silent movie in history (+a few dialogues and this song)

  • I don't see anything funny about this. I guess you still have to give respect to old comedy, but I honestly don't see what's funny here. Vaudeville was funny, all I see here is somebody walking around in a cicle doing gestures.

  • @TheKenTerry That's the difference between today's movies and older ones.

Nowadays they focus too much on effects, on making it be as close to real life as possible, focusing less on the actors themselves.

You see people acting just 'cause they have a family member of certain importance - of course, there are the good ones, though.

Charlie Chaplin's era they had to focus on acting, expressions and physical aspects of the body. Today's untrained can't see that that easily.

  • @TheKenTerry [just a follow up to my last comment...]

I - and probably many others here - don't respect him just 'cause he's from old school movies and stuff. I respect 'cause the guy really IS a genius.

Few actors - from that era or ours - can do comedy like him.

    .

I may have sounded a little harsh, if I did, it wasn't my intention. ;)

Just saying MY OPINION - before the troll attack from people willing to ruin this - about this scene. :P

  • @al3xandrec

Ha, i've heard worse. As a comedian I still respect him, I just don't find this particular scene amusing.

  • @TheKenTerry go back to your adam sandler-type of humor..this is priceless, too bad you can't understand it.

  • @8smellyjelly8

Who the hell said anything about Adam Sandler?

  • for all those who are asking for translation. you can really do so, he combine several language and on top of that added fake words and gibberish and such

  • I woke up my neighbor yesterday when Chaplin was rehearsing his song...

  • what an amazing man, 122 years . and still his name + talents are around .

  • @CCE247 Absolutely. I think he is immortal in that sense; he'll be around for ever because he was a true genius on so many levels. Every next generation to come will watch and enjoy Charles Chaplin :)

  • can someone translate it to enlish ??? love this part :)

  • 1:32 i remember that from the song "Kids"

  • my favorite scene in the film, he is so amazing, i can't get enough...he blows me away with his pantomime! i forget it's even a silent film :D

  • "Voulez-vous la taximeter...tu la tu la tu la waaa!!!"

  • Comment removed

  • 2:57 Michaelll jacksonn! <33 :)

  • such a great tune :)

  • What a wonderful singing voice. I'm sure whoever has watched this has also seen The Great Dictator. He has a beautiful voice and I wish he would have sung more.

  • @IcyMaking His voice was dubbed; he never permitted his tramp character to talk.

  • that trippie one watch?v=R02tbrZSO3I

  • i want to download this song... where can i?

  • 4:42 the most funny moment, when he is just receving the applauses and got scared about a guy lol

  • propably the greatest entertainer of all time

  • @FreshSteff .... try Buster Keaton sometime ..

  • Charlin was a genius! To this day, he is still the greatest comedian of all. He is a true master of it!

  • He does moonwalk.

  • I love Charlie Chaplin !

  • Is he even actually singing anything, or is it just Eurodegook? I can't make sense of what he's saying....

  • @izzykov no he's just saying words

  • @izzykov Yeah, that's sort of the point. He didn't write anything, he just improvised on the spot. there are no real words, just a few understandable ones in French and Italian. Other than that, its gibberish. That's why its so great!

  • this is the best scene from a movie ,lovely pure art ,pure comedy pure charlie chaplin

  • Chaplin was an absolute born talent. He is one of these few rare natural comedians that just needed to put very simple things together and he would make people laaugh!

  • He speaks!

  • This is not the first time Chaplin's voice was heard on film. A few years prior to this, he visited his native England. Newsreal cameras recorded his arrival and Chaplin actually spoke on film for the first time ever.

  • @MFPhoto1 Yes but this was the first recording that was a major, scripted film in which Chaplin was in character, this was what everyone wanted to see/hear.

  • Check out the REMIX of this Chaplin classic tune by: Swing Kids - Nonsense

  • if they couldn't talk in the movie then how did he sang the song?

  • @AfghanCommando This was released right after "talkies" were new

  • @naruto10156 Not quite right. Modern Times was released in 1936, seven years after the first commercial talking films. Chaplin did use the soundtrack to ensure that the music in his films would be the same wherever they played, but this is the first time he actually used dialog. Note how all the talking in the film is done through machines. Chaplin foresaw that improvements in communication technology actually damages our ability to communicate. Watch the entire movie!

  • @MFPhoto1 Yes, this is one of his films, in which he used dialogue---for the OTHER actors, however, he strictly kept his tramp character silent. He once said, "The day the tramp speaks, is the day he dies." His later film, Monsieur Vordeux (sp), is the only film, where he retires his "tramp" character, and talks. There are three different actors, who dubbed his vocals for the dialogue.

  • @MFPhoto1 Okay. I stand corrected. I heard that his voice was dubbed in this film. However, I was wrong. He did actually speak in his first talkies. Sorry for the misinfo.

  • @hyancinth70

Yes this is Chaplin's voice. Dispite what some posted below, I can't imagine Chaplin letting anyone do anything for him. But this is not the first time Chaplin's voice was heard on film. A few years before, he returned to his native England for a vacation. The visit was covered by newsreel cameras, and Chaplin spoke on film for the first time. The footage survives. I have seen it.

  • @AfghanCommando he prefferedthe silence in his movies as the character of the tramp was always imagined by charlie and the public to have a local slang accent rather than charlie's strong posh accent. to have talked properly would ruin the character which is why the tramp was rarely seen after this film was released.

  • Brilliant performance.... just watched the whole movie, its a true piece of art.

  • It's so funny even if we don't understand a word.

  • The girl at the begining is so beautiful.

  • YOU WILL ALWAYS BE THE BEST.

  • i was looking for this everywhere!! cool!!!

  • he's a genius

    lol

i want to sing and dance like him

  • I like how 90% of all videos that say they are funny on youtube turn out to be not funny and a waste of good time

  • @deadclown001 You're a waste of good time.

  • @C3P0meetsData Yeah and your were a waste of your parent's time so bye bye.

  • the tramp was always a silent film character, so it was very fitting that when he had to speak (or sing) in the end, it was gibberish

  • a great man and comedian of his time

  • His dancing is just hilarious!

  • You dumb fucks. He is singing gibberish that is a combination of French and Italian SOUNDING words. Chaplin didn't want to speak on-screen, but then dialogue came into film and everyone expected it. As a result, the audience finally got to hear Chaplin "speak." Abso-fucking-lutely Brilliant.

  • Grow up and then watch again.

  • Like the rap/rock/english songs today, in better. The words senseless, u can't understand the pronunciation. But this song at least was2a great tune, unlike the mediatized tripe

  • that's not french at all, is a mix of languages...because this is the first an last movie he talks like vagrand caracter...be cause that caracter was knowing by every one in the world and if he sing all the song in only one language he thougth that he will disappoint his fans.

  • In brief to understand almost something, you have to speak italian and french very well because there are lots of similitudes in the prononciation and the words. Like: "je la poose a ti la tua" = Je te la donne/pose, in french... So for the english, learn french! XD

  • C'est chiant je peux pas tout mettre!!! pff

    and the final chorus:

    Se motra so la sonta

    Chi vossa la travonta

    Les zosha si katonta

Tra la la la, la la la ...

Littéralement; un génie ce charlot!!! Toujours dans nos coeurs <3 <3

  • Se montya si la moora

    La sontya so gravora

    La zontya comme sora

Je la poose a ti la tua

    Je notre so la mina

    Je notre so cosina

    Je le se tro savita

Je la tuss a vi la tua

  • I'ts a mix between italian and french.

  • I love when people ask for subtitles. Charlie and his fake french! loveit!

  • do they sing "by the moonlight you can hear those darkies singing" in the very beginning?

  • @qrlosyahoocom - your right

  • am i seriously?

  • or you mean you hear it too?

  • @qrlosyahoocom - I hear it. Those songs were standard then

  • tro for charlot!!!

  • omg i watched this last year so fucking funny watch him when he dives its so funny. he jumps into a pool of water 1 foot deep on purpose no stunts

  • haha i remember that part! i laughed so loud!

  • ei....

can you give me the subtitle...

    english please...

    i don't what he say..

but i laugh because of his body langguage...

    thx...

  • The whole thing is that he is singing gibberish. No one understands what he says.

  • That's the idea of the song. He is not speaking any language because he can't remember the words. He's telling the story with his body language. What he's saying is French/Italian gibberish.

  • What he sings is meaningless. No precise language. Maybe you say "yaourt" in english.

  • Está incompleto el video, está editado el final.

  • haha actually MJ's fav song was smile not this lol

  • Normally I hate physical comedy, but Chaplin always makes me laugh. He was a master at it.

  • shichifucker: hi!! same in there...there are only singers, that might be talented, but an artist like him....not one :s

  • charly chaplin is a genius! im only 15 years old and i can tell! btw i wish my generation had more interest in real art like this.

  • @shuichifucker I completely agree

  • @shuichifucker thank you, im 16 and i marvel at this awsomeness, im going to be charlie chaplin for holloween and walk around in Manhattan.

  • @shuichifucker same here. considering that all his films are silent he does amazing things with what he is given. im 15 too and this is true acting!

  • @shuichifucker Note that the lyrics are not the same that are written on his cuffs. The "Gibberish" he's improvising is the actual song.

It's funny that way, and in the fact that it sounds like he's just making up something completely random on the fly.

Classic arts. Down with "NEW entertainment". Let's bring back a better time of comedy...Stooges, Marx Bros, Chaplin!!!

  • @shuichifucker

I totally agree with you! :D I'm 16 too (last year I was 15 too ahahahah)

  • @shuichifucker hey in film studies we studied chaplin, he's unreal!

  • @shuichifucker im 12, and i totally agree with you, also buster keaton is brilliant too

  • es un cabron este cuate

  • MICHAEL JACKSONS FAVE SONG R.I.P!

  • Actually that was 'smile' from later on in this movie.

  • his favorite song was "smile" not this song, it's in the same movie, but it's a different song.

  • A lingua eh sborniana!

  • ke lingua è?

    voglio saperlo

  • sounds like the popular russian folk song: muirka

  • 4:01 - 4:15 is how i'm entering and leaving the club this weekend. I'm hopping out of my car, walking past security and dropping "the Chaplin" on the dance floor catalyzing a myriad of models to flock to me.

  • lmfao

  • very funny very funny

  • it doesn't mean anything, it's supposed to sound french

  • What is so amazing about this song is that it is so universal. I've read scholarship that claims it to be mock-Italian, mock-French, mock-German, etc. (personally I thought mock-Spanish) I sure it may even sound mock-English to someone.

The point being Chaplin is refusing to say anything coherent and by doing that he is say far more than could be said in words. He tells the story through pantomime and in so doing says that he has nothing worth saying he can say in movement and image.

  • stop analysing the song and laugh

  • Stop underappreciating Chaplin's genius! Funny AND sophisticated, Chaplin deserves any recognition on any level one can give.

  • i completely understand his genius. all i'm saying is that charlie chaplain didnt make this stuff for it to be analysed. thats speilburgs job. charlie chaplain made these sketches for ppl to laugh

  • ahaha I do really love this man ! Funny song !

  • now that's comedy!

  • Oh man, this song always cracks me up.

    Kudos, Mr Chaplin. Kudos.

  • is this italian? i wonder what it means ???

  • It is a non-sense song. It doesn´t feature any certain type of language or meaning.

  • its in gibberish

  • Master! Great Master! Chaplin in our minds, forever!

  • Thanks Nart53,I saw this yesterday:very good!

    5*!!!

    Hugs. Maria Inês.

  • OMG HOW CUTE

  • almos moonwalk

  • When I watched this the first time and I was about six, I thought the woman was Molly Shannon. LOL

  • ...almost forgot, Paulette Goddard was really beautyful back then.

  • Pure Genius! Few today can match with him...

  • none today can match with him. he is the definition of genious. directing, producing, writing, and acting in most of his movies. and for this movie he composed all the music. no one can match him. he is amazing

  • Hear hear!! You're NONE can match him... ever!

    Sorry'bout that:)

  • It is great! He is a genuis!

  • haha i wanted to watch just to hear him sing. i love charlie chaplin so much.

  • cool!!!!!

  • omg thank you for posting this, my favorite clip of charlie. he's really singing in this!
