  • Does anyone here think we can bring this great Country back to this kind of glory?

  • when you say wisconsin!!!!! you've said it all. thanks to UW madison, this wonderful song, while a bit edited, will be remembered forever.

  • now that's a commercial!---- the only missing is the little tag line at the end -budweiser beer st.louis missouri.

  • I haven't seen this since I was a kid, and that was over 40 years ago, and you know what? It still makes me smile. :-)

  • The young lady singing by herself is none other than Valerie Simpson of Ashford and Simpson. She also sang a commercial for Almond Joy and Canada Dry Ginger Ale. The Budweiser song is listed in a tribute to her following the passing of her husband earlier this year.

  • Alaska and Hawaii weren't invited to the party...Lou Rawls used to do Bud ads (see related videos) and he had an album called When You Say Lou You've Said It All

  • That is Valerie Simpson from Ashford and Simpson.

  • @maryocontrary You positive? I just looked at some pics of Ms. Simpson from that time, and, the face is different. I'm guessing Theresa Graves.

  • Terrible beer with rice.

  • did budweiser taste any better back then? It taste like shit now.

  • Great commercial! As former resident of St. Louis, I may be biased in favor of Bud, but I love it. Where is the other one with those huge horses?

    jrmint99

  • Valerie Simpson (of Ashford and Simpson) is the lead vocalist here.

  • Wow that takes me back... waaaaaaay back.

    Groovy threads too!!

  • I've always loved this commercial for its catchy tune, especially the tuba and the tympani. I only heard it a couple of times, but it has been in my head ever since it came out and as luck would have it, after seeing other vintage beer commercials on YouTube, I remembered the first line of the lyrics and found it. What a delight to hear it again.

  • Curse you Jeff Green! It's stuck in my head!!!!!

  • why did you send me here jeff green

  • Drunks

  • This 1970 Budweiser is obviously making an attempt to seem diverse by including Black, Brown, Red, Yellow and White groups. The exception here is that it only includes Black women with straight and weaved hair. No natural hair because that would have been too radical for mainstream beer companies in 1970.

  • Anybody notice how the beer commercials actually had adults on them back then? Everyone looked old enough to drink. And the women are all fully dressed. Imagine that.

  • @LisaBaby67 Couldn't have said it any better.

  • @lotsabullies im impressed because of the divirsity in that era. they were ahead of there time with that commercial

  • the problem is people can actually sing well...people today dont like that

  • Always loved this Bud jingle..I remember it like it was yesterday..Especially during Sunday afternoons during the Wide World Of Sports events..Classic!

  • I love this jingle!

  • Well done.

  • I think of this commercial and jingle from time to time even after 40 years. To me it was Budweiser's best commercial. It looks like Mariette Hartley in the orange top and mini skirt, who played David Banner's girlfriend in the Incredible Hulk in the mid 70's.

  • The brothas where soo fine back then! Not that damn gangsta shit now.

  • I liked this commercial so much, that I deliberately looked for it on this site. Funny thing is that, I never liked Budweiser beer. Even when I worked for them.

  • Don't know if I'll EVER drink another budweiser after being put through the misery of watching that.

  • @blackcatcanadien yeah if i had seen this when it was current i would have hated it!

  • it's a nice quality commercial - they definitely don't put the time into these types of commercials anymore (probably because back then that would have been the ONLY ad for Bud you'd see all day, whereas now you see ads on the internet, on the road, in bars, etc. etc.). But regardless, this ad doesn't at all sell beer. I can't imagine myself wanting to drink a beer after watching this commercial.

  • WHAT a great ad!! I don't remember seeing it back then, but I've seen the star of it several times ..AH! I'm not sure, but I thinnnnk she might be the actress Judy Pace, who played Gale Sayers' wife in the classic version of "Brian's Song"('71). ..I'll do some net-vestigating~;)

  • Is this jingle referring to other slogans and jingles like when you care enough to send the very best. Or is it just coincidence?

  • Makes me proud to be a Boise State fan!

  • Makes me proud to be an American!!

  • It doesn't look/sound like Dionne Warwick. The woman's an actress, and she's lips-ynching to a studio group (yes - she is very pretty, though - and that's why she's centre-stage!).

  • God why don't they still make commercials like this. Even crappy products could sell with a great jingle.

  • Isn't the pretty blonde woman with the red-orange sweater and miniskirt Mariette Hartley?

  • @redcybra no I think that woman is Cathy Lee Crosby

  • gilblaut26- no that is not arthur. Jerry Stiller is Arthur from King of Queens and he was a well known actor in the 70's. He is actually the father of Ben Stiller.

  • A Classic! Thanks! Can't believe it's been 40 years!

  • thank you wookie cookie i love this ad of yours

  • WookieCookie, this is a truly a classic and many thanks. Where did you find this and in such great condition? I contacted Bud last year about their retro commercials and this 20-something guy was zero help with any classic commercials form the 70's. Keep em coming.....

  • Is the little short guy in front "Arthur",

the dad on King of Queens? Sounds like him when he sings, at the intro start. Looks like a midget. Great Video, luv the memory.

  • One of the most memorable jingles from the pen of prolific writer, Steve Karmen, who was dubbed "The King of Jingles" by his peers.

Remember "Everybody Likes It"... Diet Rite Cola?

How about "Sooner Or Later You'll Own Generals" ... General Tire?

And his most famous jingle... "I Love New York!"

  • I was thinking this was done in response to Coca-Cola's widely popular commercial for I Like To Teach The world to Sing with a diverse group of people! Just my 2 cents.

  • Ah, the commercial that started one of the most well-known jingles of the 70s. I was singing along with this one myself.

I still see the commercial playing in "Close Encounters" when I hear this...

    Great post!

  • paavo is right - we LOVE your posts! i get behind in watching and then have myself a little marathon... which i am doing today!

  • This is a long version?

  • A prime example of selling the sizzle and not the steak.

  • fab

  • ...and hey did you notice they didn't show a single bottle of beer ....

  • Great ad!

Does anyone know who the beautiful woman is singing by herself? She almost sounded like Dionne Warwick in the beginning but obviously that's not who it is.

  • It's entirely possible she was just a some actress doing a lip-sync to the song.

  • It is possible and I would guess likely. I believe Cathy Lee Crosby got her break as one of Dean Martin's "Golddiggers," but she's not known for singing. I'd wager the ad's producers probably wanted a diverse, photogenic group to mime the recorded vocals.

  • @WookieCookie The singer was Valerie Simpson from Ashford & Simpson fame. She also sang the Almond Joy theme "somethime you feel like a nut..." among others. I don't think the woman appearing in the spot is Valerie.

  • Maybe someone who worked with Motown's 1960's female groups (Supremes, Marvelettes, Vandellas)?

  • @wutzernutzer I've heard that it's Valerie Simpson of Ashford & Simpson fame.

  • @wutzernutzer I'm pretty sure it's Theresa Graves (starred in Get Christie Love! 1974). If it IS Ms. Graves, it'd make sense - yes, it's lip-synched, but, she started in the Doodletown Pipers (singing group).

  • @wutzernutzer Well the woman is an actress who I do not know. But the voice is Valorie Simpson.

  • This reminds me of the Coke ad "I like to

    Teach the World to Sing"

  • I think the dancing is what takes this spot to a whole new level.

  • Is that Cathy Lee Crosby in the red shirt? It sure looks like her...

  • Good eye. Pretty sure that is her. Also, the brawny African-American in fellow in the white sweater and slacks, bottom row right at 1:00, looks like Timmy Brown, NFL running back turned actor.

Also briefly thought the big guy in the blue shirt, beige vest and red neckerchief at 0:47 is Larry Wilcox, Jon from "CHiPs," but the more I look, I don't think it is. Even if Wilcox's Vietnam tour with the Marines had ended by then, he wouldn't likely be displaying that showmanship and haircut so soon.

  • Thanks for all the great comments and analysis you always provide. I really do appreciate it.

  • Glad to do it, WookieCookie. You regularly provide high-quality clips of ads I haven't seen since I was a boy, much of it stuff I won't find elsewhere.

Always a pleasant surprise to see a new round of your posts. I suspect many others feel the same way.

  • @PeerlessPaavo Heard this jingle on a radio clip web site. It was on the "Lange Gang" on 560 KSFO circa 1970

  • I thought so too.
